Volume 1
Message to the Adjutant General with a copy of R. C. Drum's same date reply appended. General Ord's remains left Havana on February 23rd, on the steamer City of Merida of the Alexander Line; due in New York in the afternoon of February 27th. More likely, it will arrive the morning of the 28th as "she is a slow steamer." This means the body would not arrive in Washington before the morning of the 28th or 29th. The deceased would arrive in Washington under guard, commanded by 1st Lieut. Paul Roemer of the 5th Artillery until the funeral escort arrived. Hancock would send dimensions of the box as soon as they were known. Drum's reply indicates that the funeral would take place on the 29th at 11:00am.
