Florence Gould photograph album, 1896-1897, 1902

The Florence Gould photograph album primarily contains pictures taken during the Gould family's stay at "Pinelands," their summer home in Topsfield, Massachusetts, in September 1896. The photographs show room interiors, members of the Gould family, and the house and its surroundings. Pictures from May 1897 and April 1902 show the Gould family and scenes in and around a home in the Maplewood neighborhood of Malden, Massachusetts.

The Florence Gould photograph album (22cm x 17cm) contains 110 photographs of the Gould family, mostly taken at "Pinelands," the family's summer home in Topsfield, Massachusetts, in September 1896. Much smaller groups of photographs were taken at the Gould family's home in the Maplewood neighborhood of Malden, Massachusetts, in May 1897, and at an unidentified location on April 19, 1902. The three pictures from 1902 are cyanotypes, and the remaining photographs are primarily silver gelatin prints. Florence Gould presented the album to her brother, George L. Gould, and his family at Christmas in 1896.

The largest group of photographs pertains to the family's life at Pinelands in September 1896, including exterior views of the house and grounds and candid and posed group photographs taken on the home's porch. Various members of the Gould family, particularly Rosamond and Bertram Gould, appear in the pictures, as do some of the family's pets, and at least three photographs show people sleeping. Rosamond Gould is the subject of many photographs, which show her playing with a doll, sitting with her sister Miriam in their shared bedroom at Pinelands, and riding bikes with her brother Bertram near their Maplewood home. The photographer also accompanied Bertram and others on an excursion to a golf course in Topsfield. Members of the family are also pictured riding in a horse-drawn carriage in the mid-1890s and preparing to embark for Topsfield in April 1902. The album also includes many interior views of the Gould family's homes in Topsfield and Malden, including shots of sitting rooms, dining areas, staircases, and bedrooms. One vanity's mirror reflects another mirror sitting across the room, which in turn reflects the first mirror.

Fred Dustin papers, 1884-1975

Fred Dustin was a Saginaw, Michigan, building contractor, deputy state oil inspector, 1903-1905, and archaeological surveyor and writer on Michigan archaeology and history. The papers include correspondence, newspaper clippings, sketches, diaries, and record books concerning his interest in the archaeology of Michigan, including the archaeological survey of Isle Royale, 1929-1930, and the survey and mapping of the Ogemaw County Earthworks in 1931; also material relating to the history of Saginaw and to Dustin's interest in the archaeology of the Michigan Indian; and photographs. Correspondents include Wilber M. Brucker, Fred L. Crawford, Woodbridge N. Ferris, William B. Mershon, William A. Smith, Albert W. Tausend, Charles E. Townsend, Arthur J. Tuttle, Arthur H. Vandenberg, and Murray D. Van Wagoner.

The Fred Dustin Papers contain correspondence, diaries, record books, writings, field notes, photographs, and other materials that document Dustin's life and interests in Michigan archaeology and history. The papers consist of seven series: Autobiographical and Biographical, Correspondence, Archaeology, Papers and Miscellaneous, Diaries, Record Books and Ledgers, and Photographs and Scrapbook.

Greene Family Lake Winnipesaukee photograph album, [ca. 1891]

The Greene Family Lake Winnipesaukee photograph album contains views of the Greene family's steam yacht on Lake Winnipesaukee, lakefront properties and lakeside scenery, pictures of people enjoying indoor and outdoor recreational activities, and formal portraits.

The Greene Family Lake Winnipesaukee photograph album (25cm x 30cm) contains 32 photographs taken on and around the New Hampshire lake in the late 19th century. Most prints are 24cm x 19cm, pasted one to a page, or 12cm x 19cm, pasted two to a page; one page has four prints, each 9cm x 12cm. The original covers are no longer extant.

A large steamboat, the Lady of the Lake, appears in one or two images. A small steamboat belonging to the Greene family, theMohawk, is shown on the water in numerous photographs, often with people relaxing on deck or waiting to board from a dock. The album contains many scenic views of lakeside properties, likely owned by the Greene family, including one of the Hotel Weirs. One boy posed by a tall flagpole with a large United States flag, erected next to a lakefront house, and one item shows a flock of ducks around a sign for Roxmont Mineral Spring, possibly part of the Hotel Weirs grounds. Some of the pictures are interior views of unidentified people relaxing in a parlor; in one photograph, a woman sits at the piano while a boy plays a horn and a man reads a newspaper from Boston, Massachusetts. J. A. Greene appears in at least two photographs; in one photograph he sits in a parlor with an unidentified woman and in another photograph he is shown with freshly caught fish along the lakeshore. Photographs of a hunting party beside a log cabin, fishing from a canoe, riding in a horse-drawn wagon, and posing by a dead deer are also included. The album has a formal group portrait of a man, woman, and young boy and a formal portrait of a young girl, all likely members of the Greene family. Two fanciful images show a person standing next to a florally decorated bicycle with a large umbrella attached and a staged scene of a tooth extraction set in a medical office. A second photograph of the same medical office shows a man writing at a desk.

The Horace L. Wilgus papers include correspondence, speeches, clippings, notes, manuscripts of books and articles dealing with his professional career, the many Ann Arbor organizations and issues in which he was interested: particularly progressive political movements and prohibition, including the Michigan Anti-Saloon League, the anti-trust movement, and the 1912 Progressive Party. The collection also includes University of Michigan Law School course materials, family genealogical information, and a small series of photographs, many of them of his home on Washtenaw Ave. in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Isaac Newton Demmon papers, 1858-1920

Professor of English at University of Michigan. Correspondence, essays, a diary, and photographs.

The Demmon collection is comprised of the following series: Correspondence; Manuscripts; Essays and addresses; Other papers; and Photographs. The correspondence is both professional exchanges and personal letters among family members. Included are Demmon's student letters from Butler University and The University of Michigan, and two Civil War letters (1864) written while he was serving with 132nd Indiana Infantry. Among his professional correspondence are letters from James B. Angell, William L. Clements, Martin L. D'Ooge, Karl E. Guthe, Henry B. Joy, James McMillan, Moses C. Tyler. There are also lecture notes and other papers pertaining to his teaching duties; three volumes of personal accounts (1899-1920); a diary (1869) kept while he was a professor at Alliance College, Ohio, in which he mentions Mark Twain and John A. Bingham. The photographs include portraits, family photos and tintypes; photos of Demmon in the classroom, and of Demmon's residence in Ann Arbor.

Recording secretary of the Central Committee of the Michigan Democratic Party, 1962-1967. Correspondence, working files, printed material, photographs and audio-tapes dealing with the organization and management of the state Democratic Party, Lansing and Ingham County, Michigan, party politics, various political issues, Michigan participation in the national Democratic Conventions of 1960 and 1964, and the Michigan Senate Campaign of 1966.

The Nye papers, though containing virtually no personal material, is strong on state Democratic politics, especially as relates to her work as recording secretary and her involvement in party affairs in Lansing and Ingham County.

The collection has been arranged into the following series: Personal / Biographical; Correspondence; Lansing and Ingham County Democratic Party; Michigan Democratic Party; Party Conventions; Miscellaneous Democratic Party materials. The collection documents her political activities on the local, county, and state level and includes memoranda and correspondence with three Democratic state chairmen: Neil Staebler, John Joe Collins, and Zolton Ferency. In addition, her files include State Central Committee minutes, directories and other information on party publications, such as the Democratic Digest. Her files also contain material on various political campaigns of the 1950's and 1960's, and on various national Democratic Conventions, including notes and tape recordings of the meetings of the Michigan caucus at the 1964 convention.

Oklahoma Homesteader's photograph album, [ca. 1889]

The Oklahoma Homesteader's photograph album contains pictures of ranch or homestead buildings, cowboys, and Native Americans in an unidentified prairie region in the late 19th century. Some of the Native Americans posed with guns and white soldiers, and one group wore military uniforms. Two items are photographs of watercolor paintings.

The Oklahoma Homesteader's photograph album (36cm x 29cm) contains 49 prints showing pictures of buildings, scenery, cowboys, women, Native Americans, and watercolor paintings. Sixteen images are exterior views of a ranch home and outbuildings in a flat, grassy area with few trees. Two men in wide-brimmed hats are sometimes visible, including one driving a two-wheel horse-drawn carriage. Nine photographs are interior views of the residence showing a wallpapered living room or office, a paneled bedroom, dining area, and kitchen.

Of particular note are the interior views that show hats, bridles, lassos, and rifles mounted on the walls in combination with full bookshelves, framed art and photographs, and decoratively arranged wheat stalks. A large framed print or painting of a cow is featured over the mantelpiece along with small cabinet photographs, feathers, and artifacts; the beds are covered with Native American blankets and carefully arranged newspapers; books, papers, and a book-press are visible. Also of note are views of the rustic kitchen with coffee advertising signs and genre prints displayed. One view shows a dinner table set for seven, while another shows a bearded man cooking over an iron woodstove. Two pictures show a pair of women posed outside of the house with a dog. Two images are exterior views of a property with a larger wood frame house that appears to have been recently constructed.

A group of 14 pictures depicts cowboys roping cattle, performing farm work, pitching horseshoes, and relaxing alone or in groups. One photograph shows a group seated on a blanket, playing cards with guns drawn.

The album has six photographs featuring groups of Native Americans; a band of Native American men brandishing rifles appear posed with a white soldier in a uniform jacket; a mixed-gender group of Native Americans includes several men in military uniforms, women and children; a group of women and children in front of a tipi; a group of women and children with a child's wagon; three Native American men in military uniforms; and a large group with uniformed men on horseback, women, and children, taken at distance with tipis in the background. The final two pages have photographs of watercolor paintings of prairie scenes featuring small buildings. The album has a brown leather binding with a moire-patterned blue cloth cover, and a spine label "0013" from a previous unknown owner.

A wall calendar appearing in an interior view indicates June 2 falling on a Sunday, which occurred in 1889 and 1895.

The collection consists of hand-made sketchbooks and loose sheets of paper featuring drawings likely made by children Edith, Jennie, and Theodore Pond while residing in Syria (present-day Lebanon) with their missionary parents, Theodore S. Pond and Julia Pond. Prominent imagery depicted includes domestic scenes, women and children at work and play, and women tending to the sick. The Ponds rarely specified locations in their drawings, and while they may have been generic or imagined scenes some may have been made to reflect the Pond family's residence or experience while in Syria (present-day Lebanon).

The collection consists of hand-made sketchbooks and loose sheets of paper featuring drawings likely made by children Edith, Jennie, and Theodore Pond while residing in Syria (present-day Lebanon) with their missionary parents, Theodore S. The bulk of the drawings were done in pencil, but several were made using pen and ink, pen and wash, and pastels. A large portion of the images depict interior domestic scenes of women and young girls reading, sewing, dining, visiting, sleeping, and at play with toys in parlors, living rooms, and bedrooms. These drawings include details like clothing, accessories, furniture, and decorations. Several show women wearing the Christian cross as jewelry, head coverings or veils, and chopines (a platformed shoe), possibly representing adherents of the Eastern Orthodox Church. Several of the drawings feature women at work doing tasks like cooking, sewing, washing dishes or floors, sweeping, gardening, tending to the ill, or bathing children. Older women are represented alongside middle-aged women, young girls, and infants. Adult men and young boys appear occasionally in the scenes.

Several illustrations appear to show women laboring as domestic servants, and at least four of these images represent dark-skinned women. One additional drawing shows a family scene with three dark-skinned women knitting or resting in a hammock.

Outdoor scenes are also represented, showing women and children walking and travelling in the streets, playing games, visiting the beach, riding horses, shopping, sleighing, or picking fruit. One drawing depicts a family standing beside a sphinx with pyramids in the background. Other locales outside of the home are also featured, including a store, a church, a theater, a photographer's studio, and possibly a school.

Miscellaneous other topics were drawn, such as angels, Grecian women, a dream, a centaur statue, a shield with an American crest, and two singing girls who appear to be impoverished.

Only two of the drawings were signed, both landscapes by Theodore H. Pond, one dated 1882 shows a building in the countryside and the other depicts a village street scene leading towards a church. Two other unsigned landscapes are also present, one labelled "St. Augustines Canterbury." Two other illustrations -- one a portrait of a young woman and the other an interior scene with four children blowing bubbles-- have the name "Edith" inscribed with ink on the verso. Several of the drawings were labelled by a child in block letters. One of the drawings was made on a sheet of paper that had previously been used to write notes on the Letters of Paul.

The drawings were enclosed in an Upsala College envelope labeled: "'Drawings of Edith & Elsie Pond when they were little girls in Syria.' (Be Sure To Save These)"
