Files on individual University of Michigan varsity athletes, coaches and staff compiled by the Media Relations staff and its predecessors. Files may include biographical information, statistics, clippings and photographs. Files for an individual may range from a single item to several folders. Not all U-M athletes are represented in the records.

The Athletic Department Individual Files consist of three series: Coaches and Staff, Athletes -- Men, and Athletes -- Women. The files in each series contain background information, news articles, and photographs of individual University of Michigan Varsity athletes, coaches, and staff members from the University's athletic department. It should be noted that some files do not contain photographs. Also, some files contain compact discs (CD's) containing digital images. The bulk of the files date from around 1960 to 2002, but included are files from as early as the mid to late 19th century, to as recent as 2005. The files do not include members of the club sports teams. The number and extent of files varies by sport and over time, in part reflects varying degrees of effort by the Media Relations staff. Sometimes referred to by Media Relations staff as the "star files", the Individual Files are most extensive for football and basketball, but all varsity sports are represented. Beginning in the 1970 coverage all sports becomes more extensive. After 1982 when women's sports began competing in the Big Ten and management of publicity efforts became more fully integrated in the Media Relations office, the coverage of women's sports becomes more extensive.

The files in each series are arranged alphabetically. (Files have ben received at various times ad are physically arranged in several alphabetical run, but are listed in a single alphabetical run for coaches/administrators, men, and women athletes.) Each of the athlete entries is followed by a code for the sport(s) in which they participated.

Photographs (negatives only) of Alpha Rho Chi initiation and other activities (1946) including photos of Alden Dow; football games and homecoming decorations (1948); and the College of Architecture and Design (1948) including photos of classrooms and studios. Also photograph, undated, of the Star Cornet Band of Ishpeming, Mich., and photograph, 1918, of "the human U.S. shield" formed by 30,000 officers and men at Camp Custer, Battle Creek, Mich.

Student papers, 1930-1987 prepared for classes in history at the University of Michigan (primarily Michigan history class taught by Lewis G. VanderVelde, but also including research papers for classes taught by Sidney Fine and others); topics concern Michigan social and political history; Michigan biography and bibliography; and local community history.

The student papers are organized alphabetically by author in two series, which are similar in date range and topics covered. Topics of papers concern Michigan social and political history; Michigan biography and bibliography; local community history and University of Michigan history. A topical index to the papers is available in the first box of the collection.

University of Michigan graduate, Class of 1929, member of the Delta Chi fraternity, the Aces Club and the Trojan Club. Scrapbook contains photographs and ephemera documenting Fisher's immediate family, friends, travels, and time as a student. Images include depictions of fraternity and social club activities, graduation exercises, major sporting events, and the University of Michigan's Frosh-Soph Spring and Fall Games.

The Sol Fisher scrapbook contains mostly identified photographs documenting Fisher's immediate family, friends, his travels, and University of Michigan campus life. This includes the 1926 and 1927 Frosh-Soph Spring and Fall Games, and the 1925 Western Conference championship football game between the University of Michigan and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Other photographs document Delta Chi fraternity, Aces Club and Trojan Club activities, and the 1927 and 1929 Senior Swing Out exercises. Of note, are three Delta Chi photographs in which chapter members are posing with a small boy of color (identity unknown). A caption above one of the photographs states "Delta Chi-Help."

Also found within the scrapbook are photographs depicting several buildings on U-M campus, including the Law School, Martha Cook building, College of Engineering, and the Student Union building. Other photographs show prominent structures in Detroit, Mich., including the former General Motors Headquarters building and the construction of the Detroit-Windsor Bridge (the Ambassador Bridge).

Remaining materials within the scrapbook include commencement programs and ephemera, publications, and correspondence. Of note is what appears to be a 1928 prank letter addressed to Fisher in which a woman by the name of Sunshine is asking for his hand in marriage.

Varsity athlete, 1921-1924, and head football coach, 1929-1937, at the University of Michigan. Papers include football playbooks, scrapbooks detailing his athletic career, and photograph album of Kipke, university scenes, and athletic events.

The Kipke papers document his career as a high school athlete in Lansing, Michigan; as a varsity football, basketball and baseball player at the University of Michigan; and as head football coach at the University of Michigan. The collection include football playbooks, scrapbooks detailing his athletic career, game films from the 1933 season, a football instructional film, and photograph album of Kipke, university scenes, and athletic events. Scrapbook, 1913-1919, of Stanley G. Fontanna, documenting his time as University of Michigan student and track and field athlete, 1913-1917; and his service in the U.S. Army, 1918-1919.

The Stanley G. Fontanna scrapbook documents his student experience at the University of Michigan in 1913-1917 as well as his military service, 1917-1918. The scrapbook consists primarily of photographs with a few clippings, event programs, and ephemera. It includes photographs of University of Michigan football players and track and field atheles (including Fontanna and Clarence Ufer), photos of the Forestry Club and forestry camps, and fraternity and campus social life. There are also photos from Fontanna's military service at Fort Custer, Mich., Allentown, Penn., and Officer Training School at Fort Mead, MdD. Ephemera includes ribbons from track meets, event programs from Phi Sigma Kappa, Les Voyageurs, and other campus organizations; along with military certificates and commissions.

The Bennie G. Oosterbaan collection documents his career as athlete and coach at the University of Michigan, especially his time as head football coach. The collection is comprised of the following series: Correspondence; Papers collected from different period of his career; Miscellaneous; Scrapbooks; and Photographs. This collection includes a scrapbook of newspaper clippings largely dealing with University athletic activities, especially football and miscellaneous papers concerning his activities as a sportswriter for several newspapers while a student, including a note from James B. Angell on Rhodes scholarships.

There are also photographs of the interior of Caldwell's room, presumably at the Delta Kappa Epsilon house; as well as a photo of Smith.

Scrapbook documents Pattengill's time as a student at the University of Michigan. It contains photographs of Pattengill with other students and with her family, football memorabilia, programs, dance cards, correspondence, newspaper clippings, ephemera, and various objects, all dated between 1902 and 1906. Loose scrapbook materials that were found inside the scrapbook, housed in a separate box, include cards and invitations, correspondence, postcards, programs and playbills. The collection includes photographs of Pattengill's future husband Austin T. Brant, her brothers Victor and Craig (who also attended U-M), other family members, and members of her sorority Lambda Rho Tau. Also included in the collection are oversize issues of Chicago Daily Tribune and The Inter Ocean from December 1, 1905 describing the football game between Chicago University and U-M.
