The Stanley G. Fontanna scrapbook documents his student experience at the University of Michigan in 1913-1917 as well as his military service, 1917-1918. The scrapbook consists primarily of photographs with a few clippings, event programs, and ephemera. It includes photographs of University of Michigan football players and track and field atheles (including Fontanna and Clarence Ufer), photos of the Forestry Club and forestry camps, and fraternity and campus social life. There are also photos from Fontanna's military service at Fort Custer, Mich., Allentown, Penn., and Officer Training School at Fort Mead, MdD. Ephemera includes ribbons from track meets, event programs from Phi Sigma Kappa, Les Voyageurs, and other campus organizations; along with military certificates and commissions.
Stanley George Fontanna was born February 5, 1894 in Powers, Mich. He graduated from Escanaba High School in 1910. Fontanna attended the University of Michigan in 1913-1917, receiving a Bachelor of Science in Forestry from the College of Literature Science and the Arts. Fontanna was on the University track team, earning a freshman numeral in 1914, an "ama" letter in 1915, and varsity letters in 1916 and 1917. His primary event was the 440-yard run and he also ran on the mile relay team. He pledged Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and was a member of the Society of Les Voyageurs.
Fontanna served in United States Army, June 1, 1918-February 4, 1919 with Company F of the 77th Infantry. He was stationed at Fort Custer, Mich., Allentown, Penn., and attended Officer Training School at Fort Mead, Md., from which he was commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant.
After a distinguished career in private and state forestry, including serving as Deputy Director of the Michigan Department of Conservation, Fontanna served as Dean of the University of Michigan School of Natural Resources, 1951-1963. Stanley Fontanna died in 1985 in Palm Beach, Florida.
