Ann Arbor, Michigan businessman, Republican Regent of the University of Michigan, 1972-1996, candidate for office of United States Senator, 1976 and 1982. The Deane Baker collection consists primarily of documentation of his campaigns for political office and his service as Regent of the University of Michigan. As the Bentley Library has a separate collection of Board of Regents records, the focus of the Deane Baker collection has been in those areas of university policy, procedure, and programs of most concern to him. The researcher is directed to the files of the Board of Regents and administrative offices of the university for the fullest description of Board of Regents history during the Baker years. Other portions of the collection relate to his various campaigns for public office. There is also a sampling of his other business and personal activities.

Dr. Edward Pierce was active in both medicine and politics in Michigan. He was well-known for his conception of and work at the Summit Medical Center in Ann Arbor, Michigan, a center offering medical services for low-income individuals. His political career included a seat on the Ann Arbor City Council, a term as Michigan State Senator and Mayor of Ann Arbor. The papers relate primarily to his political career, with the bulk of the papers focusing on his term as mayor of Ann Arbor from 1985 to 1987. Other papers refer to his campaigns for Congress, Senate, and governor.

The papers of Robert Alexander span the years 1970-1982. The primary focus of the collection is on Alexander's political activities in both the Human Rights Party and the Democratic Party. There is no personal material, nor is there documentation of Alexander's career. Even within the sections on his political activities there is only a moderate amount specifically relating to Alexander. The papers give a view of local politics, in which Alexander was a relatively minor figure.

The collection is primarily an office file which documents Ford's activities as a local representative, federal legislator and politician. Constituents' opinions and concerns are represented as well, particularly in the correspondence and questionnaire response files.
