Extension Service (University of Michigan) records, 1911-1999

University of Michigan unit established in 1911 to advance culture in the state, assist local communities with technical knowledge, and acquaint faculty with local conditions through course offerings and lectures by university faculty and staff at sites around the state. Records include annual reports of extension activity from 1911 to 1980, director's files, committee minutes, special reports and surveys, and records of lectures and courses given.

The records of the Extension Service document the university's efforts to extend its educational efforts beyond the campus. The records include annual reports of extension activity from 1911 to 1980, committee minutes, special reports and surveys, and records of lectures and courses given throughout the state. Topics include adult education, continuing education, work in several Michigan communities, and files relating to civil defense and disaster training, firemanship training, World War II management and science training programs, and gerontology. Documentation includes files of directors William Henderson, Charles A. Fisher, Everett J. Soop, and Alfred W. Storey. Of note are records of Charles Follo relating to extension work in the Upper Peninsula.

Republican Governor of Michigan, 1962-1969; Presidential candidate, 1968; Secretary of Housing and Urban Development, 1969-1972. Papers consist of extensive correspondence and subject files from his tenure as governor, campaign material, and files relating to service at HUD and his other political activities, includes photographs, films and videotapes and sound recordings.

The papers of George Romney document the many faceted career of an automobile executive, governor of Michigan, candidate for President, cabinet officer, and activist on behalf of volunteerism. In this electronic version of the finding aid to the Romney papers, there are six subgroups of materials. These are Gubernatorial Papers covering the period of 1962 to 1969, Pre-gubernatorial Papers covering the period before taking office in 1963, Post-gubernatorial Papers covering the period after 1968, records of Romney Associates (a group established during his bid for the presidency), Visual Materials covering mainly the period up to 1969, and Sound Recordings also covering up to 1969. There is some overlapping of dates, particularly around the time when Romney was first elected governor in 1962 and the period when he joined the Nixon administration in 1969. The researcher should also note that the papers of Lenore Romney are not part of this finding aid.

Gilbert E. Bursley papers, 1960-1981

Republican state senator, president of Cleary College; legislative files and miscellaneous materials from his tenure as Cleary College president.

The Gilbert Bursley collection consists of Legislative files, primarily from the period when he served in the Michigan State Senate. These files consist of newsletters and news releases, correspondence from constituents, and reference files maintained as background information on issues of the day. These files also include a record of the bills that Bursley introduced and his interest in the activities of various state and regional boards, commissions, and agencies. A smaller portion of the collection details some of his interests as president of Cleary College after his left the Legislature.

Jones family papers, 1860-1950 (majority within 1860-1900)

Papers of Michigan family including Joseph Comstock Jones, school superintendent and textbook publisher; Alice Van Hoosen Jones, teacher in East Saginaw, Michigan, and daughter of Van Hoosen farm owners Sarah Taylor and Joshua Van Hoosen; papers of Elisha Jones, half-brother of Joseph and professor of Latin at University of Michigan. Collection primarily comprised of correspondence, 1860-1950, and photographs, circa 1860s-1910.

The Jones family papers are comprised of correspondence, photographs, genealogy material, and other family papers. The bulk of correspondence is that of Alice Van Hoosen Jones, 1876-1950. She corresponded with her sister, Dr. Bertha Van Hoosen, her parents, Sarah and Joshua Van Hoosen, among other friends and family members. The papers also include correspondence of J.C. Jones, 1860-1902; papers of Elisha Jones, 1871-1888, including correspondence related to his European travels and legal papers; and photographs of J.C. Jones, his sister, Sarah, and Alice Van Hoosen Jones.

Lynn M. Bartlett papers, 1925-1971 (majority within 1955-1969)

Educational administrator, Michigan Superintendent of Public Instruction, 1957-1965, and official with the Johnson administration. Correspondence, reports, and newspaper clippings concerning his public career, political campaigns for state office, work in the constitutional convention, and interest in educational topics.

The Lynn M. Bartlett papers have been arranged into six series. The first three series were accumulated in his capacity as State Superintendent of Public Instruction, Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Education, and Assistant Secretary for Education within the U.S. Department of Health, Education, and Welfare. The researcher should note that although these series have been designated with the title of the office that Bartlett held, these series do not include the official files from those agencies. Records for the state office will be found in the Michigan State Archives; and records for the two federal positions held either reside within the agency itself or have been transferred to the National Archives. These three series consist of personal materials, such as speeches, personal letters (e.g., letters of congratulation, and thank yous), and other files not deemed to be part of the agency's files.

The final three series consist of Biographical/Personal, the papers of Bartlett's wife Josephine, and Collected Material.

Maxine L. Berman papers, 1968-2017 (scattered dates)

Materials surrounding the career of Jewish American politician, women's rights advocate, and the University of Michigan alumna (1968) Maxine L. Berman who served in the Michigan House of Representatives between 1982 and 1996. The collection contains biographical information, correspondence, legislative documents, collected publications, speeches, an audio recording of an interview, and other materials on subjects such as women's health and reproductive rights, education reform, civil rights, election law, and fiscal concerns.

This collection primarily focuses on Berman's political career during her tenure with the Michigan House of Representatives from 1982 to 1996. Biographical materials include an audio interview of Berman discussing her experience as a delegate to the 1976 Democratic National Convention, materials pertaining to her book The Only Boobs in the House Are Men: A Veteran Woman Legislator Lifts the Lid on Politics Macho Style, photographs, and numerous articles highlighting her career, as well as women in politics.

The collection also includes correspondence, publications, reports, speeches, and other materials primarily focusing on civil rights, education reform, election law, fiscal concerns, and women's health and reproductive rights. Of particular note are materials pertaining to the death penalty and assisted suicide; the performance, curriculum, and operation of charter schools; legislative redistricting; voter registration and campaign finance reform; financial mismanagement at the House Fiscal Agency; the Balanced Budget Amendment; and issues surrounding women's health and reproductive rights including the legalization of abortion and related issues surrounding informed and parental consent.

Other materials in the collection touch upon issues surrounding informed consent for breast cancer treatment options, the accreditation of mammography facilities in Michigan, flag burning, and family values, including materials focusing on the Michigan Department of Social Service's (DSS) attempt to reunite incest victims with their offenders.

Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters records, 1894-1980

Papers, 1894-1980, of the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Letters (named the Michigan Academy prior to 1921), a professional association of researchers and academicians. Include minutes, financial records, membership lists, and founding documents.

The Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Literature papers is organized into three series: Minutes of Annual Meeting and Semiannual Council Meetings, Financial Ledgers and Auditor's Reports, and Organizational Files.

The heart of the documentation of the Michigan Academy of Science, Arts and Literature is the series of minutes of the annual meeting and the semiannual council meetings. The minutes include reports of the standing committees, Treasurer's, Auditor's, and Librarian's reports, and text of all resolutions passed. (The minutes also appear in the published Annual Reports along with the program of the Annual Meeting, the Presidential and General Address, and membership lists.) The Minutes and Reports for 1894-1905 are bound and include a history of the founding of the Michigan Academy written by F. C. Newcombe.

The financial ledgers 1904-1937 are bound. Auditor's reports prior to 1964 are filed with the minutes of the annual business meeting. After 1964, the minutes files are incomplete. Therefore, the complete run of auditor's reports, 1964-1980, are separately foldered.

Much of the correspondence in this collection was of a routine nature. Many letters were exchanged regarding physical arrangements for meetings or regarding publication deadlines. Routine correspondence was separated from the collection. The organizational files also included a quantity of routine material. Membership lists, drafts of resolutions, and other material appearing in the manuscript minutes or in the published Annual Report were also separated from the collection. Beginning in 1953 membership lists were no longer printed in the Annual Report therefore membership information after 1953 was kept with the collection.
