Ann Arbor Human Rights Commission Records, 1957-1993

Agency of the city of Ann Arbor established in 1957 as the Human Relations Commission to investigate and deal with issues of racial discrimination in housing and employment. The name of the agency was changed in 1970 to the Human Rights Commission. The scope of the Commission came to include complaints of discrimination against women, gays, and the disabled. The record group provides substantial documentation of issues of racial discrimination in employment and housing in Ann Arbor, Michigan in the period of 1957 to 1993. Included are files relating to the establishment of the commission, minutes (through 1993 with some gaps), memoranda (1968-1970), topical files, early case files (1965-1970), and student intern projects and reports of members of the community practice program within the University of Michigan School of Social Work.

The Center for Education of Women collection consist of minutes, correspondence, audiovisual materials, and other records documenting the founding, public programs, research projects, day-to-day administrative activities, and individual staff members of the University of Michigan's Center for the Education of Women. It is divided into four broad subgroups: Central Office Files, 1961-2009; Individual Staff Files, 1919-1999; Audiovisual Materials, 1963-1997; and Website. The current CEW collection is the result of a major reprocessing project that combined several new accessions with the pre-existing record group--itself the accumulation of several accessions--and which has resulted in a re-figured collection nearly double the size of the original. The first three subgroups and their major series have been retained, but some of the lower-level organization has been updated to reflect the fuller picture of the Center that the combined set of materials affords.

Documents within folders may be arranged either chronologically or reverse chronologically, based on the existing arrangement of the majority of materials (in both the pre-existing collection and in the new accessions), and in some cases may adhere to the original filing order. Also, some files (e.g. most correspondence) were filed by calendar year (Jan-Dec.), while others (notably budgets, staff meetings, and program files) were filed by fiscal year. Unless otherwise noted, files arranged by academic year (indicated in the box list by dates such as '1990/91') run from July of the first year through June of the second year.

The Child and Family Life Department, successor unit to the University Hospital School established in 1922, has provided educational and social support for sick and disabled children while hospitalized at the University of Michigan. The record group includes annual reports, histories, correspondence, and other administrative records relating to the operation of the school. The bulk of the record group is the visual materials series, including photographs, negatives, slides, films, and scrapbooks showing educational techniques, health care treatment, and hospitalized children.

The Child and Family Life Department records relate mainly to the operation of the Hospital School, and include reports, minutes, correspondence, and a wide variety of visual materials, including photographs, slides, negatives, and films documenting the programming efforts of the staff and the experiences of its patients. The evolution of educational philosophy and changes in hospitalization and treatment can be seen both in the documentation as well as through the images that are included in the record group. The records (7 linear feet, 2 oversize boxes) date from 1922 to 2001, but primarily document the period from 1922 to 1960. The records are organized in three series: Reports and Histories, Correspondence, and Visual Materials.

Harlan Henthorne Hatcher (1898-1998) was president of the University of Michigan from 1951 to 1967. The papers span the years 1837-1998 and document Dr. Hatcher's University of Michigan presidency, Ohio State University career, literary career, organizational involvement, personal life, and family history. Includes correspondence, newspaper clippings, manuscripts, speeches, yearly datebooks, oral history interview transcripts, magnetic audio tape recordings, an audiocassette recording, and photographs.

The Harlan Hatcher collection has been divided into two subgroups of files: those which were created or accumulated from his tenure as president of the University of Michigan (1951-1967) and those materials (mainly personal) dated either prior to or subsequent to Hatcher's presidential years.

The library, as archives of the University of Michigan, is the repository for all of the files of its presidents. For historic reasons, all of the papers of presidents up to and including Harlan Hatcher have been treated as personal collections and cataloged under the name of the president. Beginning with Hatcher's successor - Robben Fleming - and continuing to the present, the files of individuals occupying the president's office have been considered both personal and institutional. Records created from an individual's responsibility as president, usually materials from the years when he was president, are treated as office files and have been cataloged as part of the University of Michigan President's Office record group. Materials from either before or after an individual's tenure as president have been treated separately and have been cataloged under that president's name.

Assistant professor of art and of education at the University of Michigan, K-12 art teacher at University School (1955-1970), and professional artist. Emphasis on visual, teaching, and historical materials from University School, including slides and photographs of students in educational facilities.

The Irene Tejada Papers include materials from the professional career of Irene Tejada, as well as materials documenting the history of University School. Organized into three series, Teaching/Professional Materials, Visual Materials, and University School Related Materials, the papers span the years 1928-1998 with the bulk of the materials from 1950 to 1970. The strength of the collection lies in the many depictions of life and activities at the University School through both visual and non-visual materials.

Ann Arbor, Michigan, businessman, active in local community groups and programs; a founder of Trailblazers of Washtenaw County, a non-profit agency operating a clubhouse rehabilitation center for the mentally ill; also active in Ann Arbor educational issues. Records of Trailblazers include bylaws, minutes, publications, and other administrative records; also files relating to involvement in other organizations for the mentally ill and Ann Arbor education.

The papers of Kevin Duke consist primarily of materials related to the different community service groups with which he was involved: Trailblazers of Washtenaw County, Alliance for the Mentally Ill in Washtenaw County, the Equity Audit Committee, and the Wines Elementary School's School Management Team. More than half of the collections relate to Trailblazers. The collection has been divided into two series: Trailblazers of Washtenaw County and Other Projects.

The Students Advocacy Center of Michigan (SAC), established in 1975 in Ann Arbor, was the only organization in Michigan, providing non-legal advocacy to students and their parents who were eligible for general and special public education programs. SAC was involved in numerous controversies involving public school policies and practices. Ruth Zweifler, founding member and director, led SAC and built a statewide presence through activism for students and parents. The record group includes administrative files and other subject files of executive director Ruth Zweifler documenting the Center's advocacy programs, its management and funding sources; includes clippings relating to the Center's support in 1979 of Ann Arbor teachers having training in Black English.
