The collection includes Smith’s correspondence with several magazines and publishers relating to his short stories and his only published novel, The Muskamming Red Head (1932), a signed copy of which is separately cataloged in the Clarke Historical Library; papers concerning several writing courses which he took through correspondence; drafts, typescripts, and carbon copies of typescripts of his writings; and one scrapbook of clippings of his newspaper column, “The Far Parade.”

The collection includes De Jong’s typed drafts and galley proofs of many of his books, some correspondence with editors, Elizabeth Nowell (his agent), correspondence with his family, 1933, 1945 and biographical materials, undated. The miscellaneous materials include the Michigan Works Program Administration’s Federal Music Project, 1938-1939, (1 folder) and a photograph of deaf children at the Kalamazoo State School in Lansing, Michigan, undated (1 folder).

Copies of sixteen of De Jong’s books are separately cataloged in the Clarke Historical Library.

Prominent members of the family include lawyer and politician Job Pierson (1791-1860) who served in Congress as a representative of New York from 1831 to 1835, and his son Reverend Job Pierson of Michigan. The collection is composed primarily of family correspondence, legal papers, genealogical research, newspaper clippings, printed materials, and visual materials, which include photographs, ambrotypes and daguerreotypes, tintypes, and ink drawings. The collection also contains materials documenting Clara Dillingham Pierson’s writing career as a children’s book author.
