Manages the University of Michigan's participation in intercollegiate athletic competition. Governed by the Board in Control of Intercollegiate Athletics and headed by the Athletic Director. Since 1973 has managed women's intercollegiate athletics. Sub-units include Sports Information, Athletic Director, Football Office and various administrative and support offices. The records, primarily from the Sports Information Office, include team rosters, press releases and news clipping scrapbooks, media guides, game programs, and team, individual, and game action photos for all varsity sports and game films of football and basketball. Other material includes scouting reports, 1938-1963, and administrative records from the football office, records of the NCAA baseball investigation, 1988-1990, and miscellaneous publications and promotional material.

The records of the University of Michigan Athletic Department document the participation of University of Michigan Athletic teams in intercollegiate competition, 1864 to the present. The records include media guides, game programs and other printed material; press releases; team and individual statistics; photographs, films and videotapes; development and Fund-raising material, and a variety of accounts, audits and other administrative The records are organized into several sub-groups based on the administrative structure of the department. The subgroups are: Sports Information Office, Football Office, Athletic Director's Office, Development Office, Ticket Office and Business Office. The Sports Information Office sub-group constitutes by far the largest portion of the Athletic Department records and includes series for each of the varsity sports.

Republican politician and regent of University of Michigan. Correspondence, 1901-1940, personal and professional materials, legal briefs and letters relating to William Cook estate and other University of Michigan affairs during his regency, 1918-1937; also correspondence while member of University's Board in Control of Athletics concerning University's departure from and return to Big Nine Conference and college athletics in general.

The Murfin papers relate mainly to JOM's activities as regent and as member of the University of Michigan's Board in Control of Athletics. The collection contains information concerning Michigan's departure from and return to the Big Nine Conference and the amateur-professional dilemma in college athletics. The regental material documents such problems as administrative oversight, particularly selection of the president and settlement of the William Cook estate. As member of the Law Club's governing body, Murfin helped to shape the university's case when Cook's bequest was contested by his wife. Although Murfin was influential in Michigan Republican party affairs, he filed his political papers separately and thus they are not included here.

The collection has been divided into two series: Correspondence, 1901-1940 and Topical Files which contain personal information and legal briefs concerning in part the Cook bequest

This collection includes a scrapbook of newspaper clippings largely dealing with University athletic activities, especially football and miscellaneous papers concerning his activities as a sportswriter for several newspapers while a student, including a note from James B. Angell on Rhodes scholarships.

There are also photographs of the interior of Caldwell's room, presumably at the Delta Kappa Epsilon house; as well as a photo of Smith.

Zoologist, college professor, president of University of Michigan, 1929-1951. Professional files relating to his career with the University Museum and as a professor of zoology, and presidential files containing correspondence, reports, speeches, and other University materials, including budget and legislative files, material relating to changes in University administration, his relationship with faculty, students and alumni, and photographs.

The Alexander Ruthven papers consists of two series of records. The first is the papers of Ruthven as president of the University of Michigan, 1929 to 1951. The second, and smaller, series is the files maintained by Ruthven as a zoologist with the University Museum and as professor of zoology. This latter series dates largely from 1908 to 1929 but also includes collected earlier files from the 1870s.

Henry Hatch was equipment manager for the University of Michigan Athletic Department, 1921-1964. Photographs of University of Michigan athletes (chiefly football players (many autographed to Hatch) and coaches and celebrities, photographs of Hatch at work in the University of Michigan athletic equipment area, photos with the Little Brown Jug trophy, photo album frorm 1947 train trip to Rose Bowl; photograph of Hatch as a child; also photograph (1914) of Ann Arbor, Mich., fire engine next to an interurban car; also newspaper clippings, correspondence (mostly related to his retirement and being made an honorary "M" Club member), and biographical information.

The Hatch collection consists of photos acquired by Hatch over the course of his 44 year association with the U-M Athletic Department. The collection includes portraits and posed action photos of football players, mainly ca. 1940-1955, some of which are autographed to Hatch; photos documenting the football team's train trips to the 1948 and 1951 Rose Bowl games and several Hollywood photos from the track team's 1935 trip to California. There are miscellaneous photos of coaches and players from other sports, posed photos of Miss Michigan 1948 on a ski hill and a 1914 photo of an Ann Arbor fire engine next to an interurban car. Also, newspaper clippings, correspondence (mostly related to his retirement and being made an honorary "M" Club member), and biographical information.

The Kipke papers document his career as a high school athlete in Lansing, Michigan; as a varsity football, basketball and baseball player at the University of Michigan; and as head football coach at the University of Michigan. The collection include football playbooks, scrapbooks detailing his athletic career, game films from the 1933 season, a football instructional film, and photograph album of Kipke, university scenes, and athletic events. Football coach, 1938-1948, and Athletic Director at the University of Michigan, 1941-1968. Papers include correspondence and other papers concerning his career at the University of Chicago, the University of Minnesota, Princeton University, and the University of Michigan; materials concerning his work and association with the National Collegiate Athletic Association rules committee, 1942-1977, the Intercollegiate (Big Ten) Conference, and the University's Board in Control of Intercollegiate Activities; also include materials relating to University of Chicago football coach, Amos Alonzo Stagg, Ralph Young, athletic director at Michigan State University, and the founding and first years of the American Football League; and photographs.

The Crisler papers document Fritz Crisler's career in athletics, 1923-1978, as a student athlete at the University of Chicago, football coach at Minnesota, Princeton and Michigan, as Athletic Director at Michigan and as a member of the NCAA football rules committee, 1942-1977.
