Archibald Rhind diary, 1833-1839

This diary chronicles the daily activities of Archibald Rhind, a Scottish immigrant, from March 17, 1834-July 31, 1839. Rhind owned and operated a farm in Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania, throughout most of the 1830s, and produced goods such as barley, potatoes, syrup, and alcohol.

This diary (approximately 300 pages) chronicles the daily activities of Archibald Rhind, a Scottish immigrant, from March 17, 1834-July 31, 1839.

The first 11 pages are manuscript copies of 4 letters that Archibald Rhind wrote in early September 1833, shortly after his arrival in Warren County, Pennsylvania. Rhind described his journey from Scotland to New York, his route from New York City to Northern Pennsylvania, and his first few weeks in North America. He also shared his impressions of the Erie Canal, American farms and laborers, and American notions of freedom (page 11).

Rhind began his diary (pp. 12-306) as he left Warren, Pennsylvania, for Sugar Grove, Pennsylvania. After establishing his farm, he frequently wrote about the weather and the progress of his crops and livestock, which included barley, wheat, potatoes, and sheep. He also remarked on tapping trees and refining the sap, distilling alcohol, and employing laborers, who included at least one Scottish immigrant and one African American. Though he focused on his farm work, Rhind occasionally described his travels, local events, and social activities. On January 29, 1839, for example, he remarked on hostilities between the local Congregationalists and Presbyterians. From February 15, 1837, to April 18, 1838, he recorded the birth, illness, death, and burial of his daughter Margaret.

The volume concludes with 8 pages of financial accounts (pp. 307-314) concerning Archibald Rhind's crops and payments to hired hands.

Bucks County (Pennsylvania) Agricultural commonplace book, 1815-1829

This commonplace book, produced by an anonymous farmer from the Bucks County, Pennsylvania, region primarily contains passages relating to farming and husbandry. Along with farming accounts and documentation of livestock, agriculture, and dairy production, the commonplace book also features material on the Agricultural Society of Bath. Newspaper clippings comment on medicine, recipes, and farming. Illustrations of fences, sheep, floor plans, property drawings, and a detailed diagram of the "cropping plan" for 1826 appear in the volume.

The creator of the volume references European agricultural societies, data and agricultural systems, and popular agriculturalists, such as George Culley (1735-1813) and Charles de Lasteyrie (1759-1849). The volume provides detailed information on growing crops, managing soil, and tending to livestock.

The first 17 pages consist of daily records of the work performed on the farm between January 1851 and August 1852, including making hay, harvesting corn, and cultivating fields. Each entry lists a worker's name (frequently C. Lantz), the amount of time (expressed as a fraction of a day), the type of work done, and the amount of pay owed (calculated at a rate of $1.00 per day). The remaining 25 pages consist of recipes for baked goods, inks and dyes, medicines, and products called "Cattle Powder," "Blood Purifier," and "Mortification." On page, written in Pennsylvania Dutch, is laid into the volume.

Records also indicate when female laborers began their employment with the family, likely for domestic service, listing the wages and expenses for three of them. The second volume is a copybook kept by Jane B. Dunwoody in 1829 while attending the Marple Union Seminary, focusing on practicing forms for banking, business, legal, and real estate transactions.

The second volume is a copybook kept by Jane B. Dunwoody in 1829 while attending the Marple Union Seminary, focusing on banking, business, legal, and real estate transactions. She studied document forms, such as indentures for apprentices, promissory and judgement notes, property leasing, proxy votes, bonds, bills of sale, mortgages, among others. The volume has illustrated, printed covers. The front cover is labelled "The Pet Lamb" and shows a man holding a lamb in his arms with pasted-on letters "JBD Book," and the back cover is labelled "The Pheasant" and shows a pheasant accompanied by a description of the bird by Goldsmith.

The Nathan H. Sharples journal contains daily entries and additional financial accounts concerning the author's agricultural pursuits in West Chester, Pennsylvania, during the early 1800s. He grew apples, corn, barley, and other crops, and attempted to run a brickmaking business in 1823.

Sharples journal (8" x 13", 279 pages) contains daily entries and additional financial accounts concerning the author's agricultural pursuits in West Chester, Pennsylvania, during the early 1800s. He began the diary portion of the volume on January 1, 1821, and composed brief daily entries, usually noting the weather and remarking on the day's labor, until his death in March 1838. He also maintained records about his hired hands, who included several women, and mentioned the progress of his apple orchards and crops of other fruits and grains. Agricultural notes are occasionally interspersed with more personal remarks, often related to deaths, illnesses, and the Sharples' numerous visits to Philadelphia. The final note is a declaration that Sharples made shortly before his death in March 1838, in which he affirmed his faith and anticipated "spiritual promises" in death (p. 209). Several pages near the back of the volume track laborers' attendance, business agreements, and financial accounts related to brickmaking (April 1823-July 1823). The inside back cover also has a pasted-in drawing of an orchard and additional financial records.

The journal pertains to the farmer's agricultural interests, interactions with neighbors and family members, and other social activities. The anonymous author, a close relation of the local Price and Walter families, composed daily entries between March 24, 1920-June 24, 1921, and from March 4, 1822-June 20, 1822. The journal's brief entries often relate to the weather and harvests, especially of potatoes and buckwheat, and other aspects of rural life such as getting horses shod, slaughtering hogs, and hauling wood. Though the author owned a farm of his own and took in boarders, he often travelled to nearby locales to assist family members or other acquaintances who required extra labor. The author's other activities included attending meetings of the Society of Friends, participating in a debating society, and organizing a "Polemic Society" (January 5, 1821).

A later owner, "[A. N.] Sharples," recorded his thoughts about the author's genealogy on March 20, 1902. The volume's inside covers have a geometrical ink drawing split in half by the binding. Overall, the journal presents a detailed portrayal of farm life in the early decades of the nineteenth century.

The entries document several types of transactions:
  • Sales of livestock (horses, pigs, and cows), meat (beef, bacon, mutton, and veal), and produce (cabbages, Indian corn, rye, flower, buckwheat, flax, potatoes, turnips, and hay).
  • Payments, both in cash and commodities, for labor (chopping wood, making shingles, splitting rails, fencing, harvesting, hulling grains, "ditching", and cider making).
  • Receipts for food, household equipment, textiles, and other supplies (shoes, whiskey, clothes, guns, linen, bonnets, tobacco, lime, bricks, and nails).

The book contains accounts for Forrester, many of his family members, and several local laborers, doctors, and farmers. The detailed and numerous accounts provide historical evidence for a late-18th century rural economy, where work was exchanged for cash and goods. Many entries document the role of women in the labor force. Forrester lists payments to women for doing house work; making clothes, handkerchiefs, and yarn; farming chores, such as planting seeds; and nursing the sick.
