This collection is made up of 13 partially printed receipts from the Our Home on the Hillside sanatorium at Dansville, New York, for patient Lizzie Allen "& maid." The receipts reflect weekly $20.00 payments for board and medical treatment. One manuscript receipt dated February 23, 1887, is a payment of $12.00 for 24 music lessons and $2.50 for the rent of a piano for five weeks.
James C. Jackson founded the Our Home on the Hillside sanatorium, which opened to the public on October 1, 1858. It was a revived and rebranded incarnation of a water cure facility that had met with no success under three previous owners. Dr. Jackson's sanatorium specialized in rest cure and water cure treatments ("psycho hygiene"), as a health resort, and became a nationally successful institution. After Jackson's resignation in 1879, the sanatorium continued operations under his son Dr. James H. Jackson. On June 26, 1882, the main building burned and was rebuilt as a fire-proof structure. It reopened in 1883 as "The Sanatorium." In 1890, the former stock company of Our Home Hygienic Institute, Dansville, New York, sold to The Jackson Sanatorium, and James H. Jackson's son Dr. James Arthur Jackson became an owner. The institution declared bankruptcy in 1914 and although the building and grounds would continue to see use it never again operated as a sanatorium or health resort. The property officially closed in 1971.
