Scope and Content:

Samuel B. Ewing wrote 3 letters (about 7 pages total) to Philip C. Tucker, an acquaintance in Vergennes, Vermont, from Savannah Georgia, between December 22, 1816, and April 30, 1817. In each of his letters, he complained about his lack of correspondence from Vergennes, though he acknowledged that his outgoing or incoming mail might have been misplaced. Ewing provided instructions for Tucker regarding his financial affairs and worried about his reputation with a man named Sibley. Ewing commented on the planting of cotton in former rice fields, mentioned Savannah's brisk shipping business, reported on duels (resulting in only two wounds), and provided prices of corn and flour. Ewing occasionally referred to his previous business in New York City and to his intent to travel to Wilmington.
