The bulk of this volume is comprised of Latin-language treatises about logic, metaphysics, and related concepts, written or copied around 1720. Each section is broken into multiple chapters, some with appendices. The volume also includes small groups of shorter writings in Latin and an example of the Porphyrian Tree. The Latin writings are infrequently interrupted by additional entries, such as a few pages of English-language notes from an August 1761 sermon based on a verse from 2nd Corinthians. Notations throughout the volume refer to William Potts, Georgius M. Conchie, George Potts, and William McCauly (with several variations on the spelling of the surname).
The identity of the original author of this volume is unknown, though the names William Potts, Georgius M. Conchie, George Potts, and William McAuley (or McCauly) appear throughout the book.
Reverend George C. Potts (d. 1838), the son of George Potts of County Monaghan, Ireland, emigrated to Pennsylvania in 1798 with his brothers John (1749-1834) and James. He lived in Philadelphia, where he was pastor of the Fourth Presbyterian Church. His sons included George (March 15, 1802-September 15, 1864), who received a bachelor's degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1819. The younger George Potts later attended the Princeton Theological Seminary and presided over Presbyterian congregations in Natchez, Mississippi (1823-1836) and New York City (1836-1864). He took the lecture notes in this volume in 1819.
