Scope and Content:

This collection is made up of 5 personal letters to Evi Smith of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and his daughter Hannah. George E. [Wills] wrote to Evi Smith from the "Old Dominion" on August 5, 1832. He discussed aspects of his life in Georgia, the possibility of a cholera outbreak, family news, and the lack of a local school and "Friends society." He also commented on agriculture, particularly with regard to wheat crops, the disruption caused by weevils, and the use of mules and slave labor to run threshing machines. Hannah Smith received 4 letters from acquaintances in the 1840s. Her friends discussed social events, Quaker meetings, a funeral, and a heat wave. In an undated letter, Hannah's sister, M[ary] Bassett, complained that she had not received a letter from Hannah, provided updates on her young son, and shared her belief that marrying within the first week of a Quaker quarterly meeting was unadvisable.

Biographical / Historical:

Evi Smith of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and his wife, Lydia Sheppard, had three children: Charles, Mary, and Hannah. Mary and Hannah Smith married brothers David and Edward Hicks Bassett, respectively.
