The collection is 4.0 linear feet in size, and contains 8 series detailing the research an activism of Noël Sturgeon, a feminist scholar and organizer in the late twentieth and early twenty-first century. The collection is primarily comprised of papers, especially newsletters and associated materials, and correspondence related to activism and demonstration planning. Materials are from 1983-2002, and the early papers are primarily concerned with anti-nuclear protests and demonstrations at the Nevada Nuclear Test Site. Other papers include Sturgeon's research materials, including research consent forms, interview transcripts, and a copy of her doctoral dissertation. Nine audio cassettes of recorded interviews are also included. The bulk of the material concerns the Ecofeminist Newsletter, which Sturgeon spearheaded, and include subscription information, mailing lists, and article submissions.
Noël Sturgeon is a feminist scholar and writer, and has taught at both the University of Washington and York University in Toronto. She received her PhD in the History of Consciousness from the University of California Santa Cruise in 1991, and has at the time of writing authored two books on intersectional- and eco-feminism. At the time of writing, Sturgeon is serving as Dean and Professor of Environmental Studies at York Univeristy.
Previous to her academic career, Sturgeon assisted in the planning and organization of multiple political demonstrations and advocacy groups, including the Livermore Action Group, the Mother's Day Action protest, and the Peace Action Committee. Much of her early activism was focussed on protesting nuclear testing, especially at the government test site in Nevada, and emphasized environmental trends and nuclear de-armament.
In the early 1990s, Sturgeon helped to organize and destribute The Ecofeminist Newsletter, a publication which focussed on issues of environmentalism and feminism, as well as on political action and peaceful demonstration. During this time, Sturgeon also produced a number of interviews with prominent feminists and activists regarding their work in ecofeminism.
