The collection includes two series, Manuscripts and Research.

Biographical / Historical:

Alexandre Dumas, père, was one of the most popular writers in 19th century France. He was born in 1802 in Villers-Cotterêts, France. As a young man, he went to Paris to become a lawyer, but became involved in the theater of the day and, in the 1820's and 1830's, became well known for his dramatic works. A prolific writer, he also wrote historical novels, with his most famous works beingThe Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo, Twenty Years After, andThe Black Tulip. He was a free spirit and was involved in many different movements of the period, serving for a time in the French National Guard and becoming deeply involved with Garibaldi during his struggle for the unification of Italy. In his later years, Dumas contributed to newspapers, and wrote memoirs and travel narratives which showcased his remarkable life. These did not, however, provide sufficient income for his extravagant tastes and extreme generosity. Dumas died a poor man in 1870 in Puys, near Dieppe.
