Scope and Content:: This smal collection contains correspondence and circular letters related to antiquarian and Shakespearean James Orchard Halliwell-Phillips (1820-1889). It pertains primarily to the development of his work in Shakespeare studies, especially on Shakespeare's biography. Most of Halliwell-Phillips's papers are located at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C.
Biographical / Historical:: Halliwell-Phillips joined the Society of Antiquaries at age 19 in 1839 and proceeded to publish numerous pamphlets on topics related collecting as well as Shakespeare's life and plays. His own collecting practices were controversial, as several libraries accused him of theft and he was known to cut up seventeenth-century books to paste into scrapbooks. Over the course of his writing career he published over 60 volumes on topics from English fairy tales and nursery rhymes to his successful Life of Shakespeare. From 1870 on, he focused his work on Shakespeare's biography.
Arrangement:: The collection is arranged in one manuscript box and consists of two volumes of pasted-in autograph letters from Halliwell-Phillipps to William Kelly, correspondence arranged in folders, and one scrapbook of other correspondence. The binding on this scrapbook is fragile.
