Biographical / Historical:

James McMillan was born in Hamilton, Ont. on May 12, 1838. After receiving an education in Hamilton schools, McMillan moved to Detroit in 1855. In Detroit, he started his business career. He worked as a purchasing agent of the Detroit and Milwaukee Railroad; organized the Michigan Car Company in circa 1863, which focused on building freight cars; and created the Duluth, South Shore, and Atlantic Railway Company, which he eventually presided over for three years. McMillan was also the president of the Detroit and Cleveland steam navigation company and directed several of Detroit's banks. He also served on the Detroit Board of Park Commissioners for three years and the Detroit Board of Estimates for four years.

McMillan's political involvement included serving as a member of the Michigan Republican State Central Committee (1876-1879), Michigan Republican state chair (1879-1880, 1886-1887, 1890-1896), and as a presidential elector on the Republican ticket (1884). In 1889, he was elected to the United States Senate and held this position until his death. During his time in the Senate, he chaired the Committee on Manufactures and Committee on the District of Columbia.

Senator McMillan passed away in Manchester, Mass.) in August 1902.
