The collection consists of a scrapbook containing programs, invitations, announcements, and other memorabilia from Hinman's years at the University of Michigan. Also included are portraits of Hinman, his wife Carrie Risdon Hinman, and their grandchildren.
Edward Chauncey Hinman was born in Battle Creek, Mich. on March 1, 1852 to John F. Hinman and Harriet (Hayt) Hinman. He enrolled in the University of Michigan and later joined the Chi Psi fraternity. After receiving his B.S. in 1874, Hinman began working as a sub-overseer on the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers Improvement project for the United States Engineering Department (now the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers). Hinman eventually attained the rank of assistant engineer.
Hinman returned to Michigan in 1880, where he worked at the C.A. Ward and Co. grain company in Port Huron. In 1882, Hinman moved back to Battle Creek, where he —as part of Hinman & Ward Co. —bought the J.M. Ward Flouring Mill. In 1888, Hinman left Hinman Ward & Co. and, in circa 1890, became involved with the Battle Creek Machinery Company (also known as the Battle Creek Steam Pump Co.). He eventually served as its president and, under his leadership, the company —called American Steam Pump Company in 1898— had grown tremendously profitable. In 1903, Hinman organized the Central National Bank of Battle Creek, and served as its president.
In addition to his professional career, Hinman served two terms as Battle Creek's alderman. He was also involved with the Athelstan Club, Ancient Order of United Workmen, Sons of the American Revolution, and the masonic Saladin Temple in Grand Rapids.
In 1876, Hinman married Carrie L. Ridson. The couple had two daughters, Gertrude Ridson (Garrison) and Belle Ridson (Lammners). After Carrie Ridson passed away in 1887, Hinman married Isadore M. Ridson in 1890. Edward Chauncey Hinman died on January 11, 1920, at Battle Creek (Mich.).
