Background

Scope and Content:

This collection is comprised of contracts, dated 1799 and 1801, signed by Henry Dearborn and James McHenry, U.S. Secretary of War, for distributing food rations to various army posts, including Detroit and Michilimackinac.

Biographical / Historical:

Fred R. Schmalzriedt was born in Detroit on March 14, 1880 to parents Caroline and Christian.

He was appointed Journal Clerk of the Common Council of Detroit and Wayne County in 1904. He was then appointed Deputy City Clerk in 1906.

Schmalzriedt enlisted and served as a private in Company I, 32nd Michigan Volunteer Infantry during the Spanish-American War. He was a member of Hazen S. Pingree Camp No. 5, United Spanish War Veterans.
