Biographical / Historical:

Carl Mapes was born in Eaton County, Michigan on December 26, 1874. He graduated from Olivet College in 1896 and received his LL.B. from the University of Michigan in 1899. He began practicing law in Grand Rapids in 1899 and later served as the assistant prosecuting attorney for Kent County from 1900-1904.

Mapes served in Michigan's House of Representatives from 1905-1907 and State Senate in 1909-1913. In 1913, Mapes was elected to the United States House of Representatives as Representative to Michigan's 5th Congressional District. He held this position until his death. Mapes was also known for chairing the Committee on the District of Columbia in 1919-1921.

Representative Mapes passed away on December 12, 1939 in New Orleans, Louisiana.
