The Kadushin Associates records document the firm's projects, especially those related to affordable housing, sustainable community design, and historic rehabilitation and renovation. The materials in this collection include large architectural drawings—such as elevation, framing, floor, section, and site drawings—as well as correspondence, development plans, photographic material, and project manuals. The "Project Files" series also includes material produced by the Urban Collaborative, the predecessor of Kadushin Associates.
Researchers should note that many of the geographically designated files in the "Project Files" series have a "collected material" file that consists of collected / reference material that, while not explicitly produced by Kadushin Associates or associated with the firm's projects, are related to the associated city, township, or county file. These files are typically found at the end of each file or, if they are oversized, within separate boxes.
Researchers interested in specific projects should consult materials in both series.
Kadushin Associates Architects Planners, Inc. (KA) was established as an architecture and sustainable community design firm in Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1975 upon the dissolution of The Urban Collaborative, a planning and design organization firm formerly based in Detroit, Michigan. KA's projects focus on affordable housing, mixed use development, sustainable and community design, historic rehabilitation and renovation, and expansion and renovation, especially in Metro Detroit. KA's clients have included–but are not limited to–community development corporations, faith-based nonprofit organizations, and public agencies. Two examples of the firm's most prominent projects include Islandview Village (IVV) and Woodbridge Estates, both in Detroit.
In 2001, KA opened a branch office in Miami, Florida. The branch office–which supports work in Florida, the Gulf Coast, and the Caribbean–focuses on sustainable community design, affordable housing, and community facilities.
KA's founder and principal is Abraham Kadushin. After receiving a bachelor of science degree in architecture from the City College of New York in 1972, he attended the University of Michigan's College of Architecture and Design (later College of Architecture and Urban Planning), where he received a master's degree (1973) and a doctorate (1996), both in architecture. His dissertation was titled "Neighborhood Transformation Design: A Case Study of Islandview Village, Detroit." In addition to his work for the Urban Collaborative and KA, Kadushin has also held multiple positions at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, Michigan, and the Environmental Design for Aging Group Research at the University of Michigan's College of Architecture and Urban Planning.
Kadushin Associates Architects Planners, Inc. has received multiple awards over the years, including a preservation award in 1986 from Ann Arbor's Historic District Commission for the firm's renovation of the 100 block of E. Ann Street, a 2007 Builders' Choice Design and Planning Award from Builder Magazine for the Woodbridge Estates project, and a 2008 Association of Licensed Architects Design Award for the English Village project (which is part of Islandview Village).
