Abstract:: Member of United States Army Co. H, 339th Infantry and veteran of the Allied Intervention in Northern Russia at the close of World War I. Includes digitized photographs depicting the daily lives and responsibilities of soldiers in Onega and Parog, Russia as well as scenes from Russian villages. Also contains digitized versions of Cain's draft registration cards from the First and Second World Wars.

Scope and Content:: The Elmer I. Cain papers provide rich photographic evidence of the daily lives of United States soldiers engaged in the American Expedition to Northern Russia. The collection is divided into two series, Photographs and Draft Registration.
Biographical / Historical:: Born December 22, 1893 and resident of La Porte, Indiana, Elmer Irvan Cain worked as a moulder in the La Porte Foundry and Furnace Co. prior to his induction to the United States Army in World War I. Cain served in Co. H, 339th Infantry with the American North Russia Expeditionary Force in Onega and Archangel, Russia. He also registered for the draft in the Second World War at the age of 48.
Acquisition Information:: Donated by Andrew Cain (donor no. 11044 ) in January 2014.
