Hermann Pinkus and Hilde Hensel Pinkus were German immigrants who worked as dermatologists and allergists in the greater Detroit area. The collection includes records from the Detroit Dermatological Society and material related to the Pinkus's participation in professional societies and their research interests, including thorium X and amino acids.

Scope and Content:

The Hilde and Hermann Pinkus Papers (4 linear feet) are arranged in the following series: Professional Societies and Activities (1.25 linear feet); Topical Files (.75 linear feet); Miscellaneous (.25 linear feet); and Experimental Files (1.75 linear feet). This collection is particularly strong in its documentation of research practices and the treatment of various dermatological issues during the first half the 20th century.

Biographical / Historical:

Hermann Pinkus and Hilde Hensel Pinkus were German immigrants who worked as dermatologists and allergists in the greater Detroit area.

Hermann Pinkus was born in Berlin on November 18, 1905. He received a doctorate from the University of Berlin in 1930, and a Master of Science degree in experimental surgery from the University of Michigan in 1935. Hilde Hensel followed Pinkus to American in 1935 and they were married shortly thereafter. Hilde also completed a Master of Science degree. at the University of Michigan. Following their graduation, both Hilde and Hermann completed their residencies at Wayne County Hospital. Both later joined the staff at Monroe Hospital.

While at Monroe Hospital, Hermann Pinkus opened a dermatopathological specimen analysis service. He left his practice in 1950 to pursue cancer research at the Michigan Cancer Institute and took up a teaching post at Wayne County College (later Wayne State University). Pinkus also held a Visiting Professorship at Glasgow University Scotland. Both Hilde and Herman Pinkus were active in professional organizations, regularly attending conference and publishing on their research interests.

Herman Pinkus passed away in 1985, and Hilde Pinkus passed away in 1995.
