This collection contains descriptive text to accompany each of the flag designs.

Biographical / Historical:

Walter Winthrop Joseph Gores graduated from Stanford University in 1917. He then went to France, where he served with the French Army as an American Field Service Volunteer and later as a First Lieutenant in the United States Army once the U.S. had entered the conflict. He was awarded a few decorations, including the Croix de Guerre. After the war, Gores briefly worked as a commercial designer in San Francisco and Los Angeles. In 1921, he used the American Field Service Fellowship to attend the Ecole du Louvre from 1921-1922, and the Sorbonne from 1922-1924.

After graduating from the Sorbonne, he returned Los Angeles and taught high school classes until he accepted a position as an instructor of architecture at the University of Michigan (U-M) in 1929. Gores became assistant professor in the College of Architecture and Design in 1931, associate professor in 1937, and a full professor in 1945.

In 1955, Gores designed a new flag for U-M, and subsequently designed flags for the University's various schools and colleges, the board of regents, and the university president.

Upon his retirement in 1959, Gores was named Professor Emeritus of design.
