The collection is organized into alphabetically by topic and includes reports, manuals, minutes, publications, and subject files of the CMU. IPCD. These were previously vertical files and so provide an incomplete history of the IPCD.

Biographical / Historical:

Organizational History:

Central Michigan University (CMU) established the Institute for Personal and Career Development (IPCD) in 1971. Its purpose was to allow students to take CMU classes at local colleges near military bases or through programs at the bases for transfer college credit. The first program enrolled 100 students. Part of the IPCD was the IPCD Library Program, later the IPCD Library, and finally Off-Campus Library Services (OCLS) (1982). [For OCLS records, see the Park Library collection.] The IPCD was monitored by the Academic Council, now the Academic Senate. By 1984, IPCD had become the College of Extended Learning (CEL), providing distance learning opportunities and classes for thousands of students. [In 2004, CEL reorganized and changed its name to the College of Professional Education, or ProfEd, and eventually Global Campus.]
