Dennis Cunningham (1936-2022) was a lawyer who practiced law in Illinois, New York, and California. One of the founding members of the People's Law Office in Chicago, Illinois, he specialized in public interest and civil law centered on injustice perpetuated by the government with cases on environmental activism, police brutality, civil disobedience, prisoners' rights, and political injustice. Notable clients include Akil Al Jundi, Judi Bari, and Fred Hampton. This collection covers his career as a lawyer from 1967-2019 in 45 manuscript boxes. The collection is arranged into two main series, case/subject files and professional files. Materials are arranged alphabetically within series and primarily include court documents, notes and annotations, correspondence, newspaper clippings, and photographs.

The Dennis Cunningham Papers covers Cunningham's professional career from 1967-2019 in 45 manuscript boxes totaling approximately 22.5 linear feet.

This collection consists primarily of court and trial documents, drafts and annotations, correspondence, notebooks with commentary on cases, transcripts, research materials, newspaper clippings, photographs, and various ephemera collected during Cunningham's career.

Strengths of this collection include coverage of most of Cunningham's career with notable cases from his time in Chicago, New York, and California. More extensive collections feature materials covering not only the trial but behind-the-scenes processes such as meetings, research and notes, and settlements or payment. The collection also features a variety of notebooks detailing Cunningham's comments on cases and his challenges with the Bar Exam in the State of California.

The records of the Charles Ellet, Jr. papers include correspondence, court documents, technical drawings and plans, general orders, reports, meeting minutes, newspaper clippings, notebooks, diaries, photographs, and ephemera.

The papers of Charles Ellet, Jr. (1810-1862) span the years 1827-1954. The papers documents Charles Ellet, Jr.’s important contributions as a civil engineer to 19th century public works projects: building wire suspension bridges, canals, and railroads; conducting the first government funded survey of the lower Mississippi River Delta; constructing and commanding the U.S. Ram Fleet; and his contributions to economic transportation theory. The papers are arranged into seven series: Correspondence; Subject Files; Technical Drawings and Plans; Newspapers; Photographs; Notebooks; and Artifacts.

The bulk of the Charles Ellet, Jr. papers contain correspondence, dating 1838-1863. The papers also contain technical drawings and plans, newspaper clippings, legal documents, survey notebooks, scrapbooks, photographs, survey reports, publication drafts, general orders, ephemera, and building specifications for canals, locks, and railroads. The Correspondence series creates an intimate portrait of his family life and professional career; including notable correspondence with Lot Clark, Charles Davis, Edwin Stanton, Benjamin Wright, Charles B. Stuart, Joseph Cabell, and John Roebling. The Subject Files series records his professional contributions, containing organizational documents and records related to his work developing public works projects, lobbying for river improvements, the legal dispute surrounding the Niagara Falls Suspension bridge, and his command of the U.S Ram Fleet during the Civil War. The Technical Drawings and Plans series consists of survey drawings and maps for the construction of railroads and canals, with significant material from his survey of the Lower Mississippi River Delta. Missing from the Technical Drawings and Plans series are plans for the U.S. Ram Fleet. The Newspapers series contains many clippings relating to the Ellet family genealogical history, and the U.S. Ram Fleet’s service during the Civil War. The Notebooks series consists primarily of survey books from his survey of Philadelphia County, 1840-1841. The Charles Ellet, Jr. papers also contain family papers illuminating the life and military career of Charles Rivers Ellet and Alfred W. Ellet.

Through the steadfast preservation, collection, and promotion of Charles Ellet, Jr.’s life and work, Mary Virginia Ellet sold the Charles Ellet, Jr. papers to the University of Michigan’s Transportation History Collection in 1936.

This collection includes promotional materials relating to dairy products such as milk (liquid, dried, evaporated, condensed), sour cream, ice cream, butter, yogurt, and cheese. Publications date from circa 1890s - 2004, with most materials being from 1920s-1970s.

Papers of activist, author, and licensed psychotherapist who is well-known in the field of ecopsychology and as a critic of the predominance of technology in society. Included are correspondence, manuscript material, photographs, serial publications and books.

This collection contains the papers of activist, author, and licensed psychotherapist Chellis Glendinning, a well-known ecopyschologist, anarchist, and bioregionalist. Much of her work concerns the negative impact of modern technology. Included are correspondence, manuscript material, photographs, serial publications and books.

The Correspondence series consists of letters from family, friends, and colleagues from the 1970s through 2008. Also included is a section of letters that focus on Glendinning's books. Newspaper and magazine clippings, flyers and broadsides related to the author's activities may be found in the Ephemera series.

Manuscript Material consists of notes and drafts of lectures, notes and research on a variety of projects, and material related to Glendinning's opera, De Un Lado al Otro, written in 2006 with Cipriano Vigil. Personal photographs and correspondence, make up the Family and Subject Files, which also holds early creative works as well as Glendinning's high school year book.

The Diaries series is made up of twenty of personal journals and diaries covering the years 1955-1978, while the Photographs series contains images of New Mexico, and Glendinning's childhood, family, travel, conferences, and friends.

The audiocassette tapes, compact discs, videotapes, and one DVD in the Audiovisual series document the author's lectures and paper presentations, complemented by several lectures by colleagues. The final two series, Serial Publications and Books, are comprised of issues of journals containing articles by Glendinning and copies of her books Off the Map: an Expedition Deep into Empire and the Global Economy (2002) and Waking Up in the Nuclear Age (1987).

The 2022 accretion consists of newly acquired materials dating largely from 2010-2020.

Materials related to the trial known variously as the Chicago Seven/Eight Trial or the Conspiracy Trial, which took place in Chicago between 1969 and 1970, gathered by Jenny Stiller. Stiller, at the time a Michigan Daily reporter, attended the trial and took detailed notes. After the close of the trial she interviewed members of the media and wrote a book called "The Movement" based partially on these interviews. The bulk of the collection is Stiller's own writing, including her notebooks and unpublished manuscript. Collection includes six notepads, the book manuscript, Stiller's press passes, and a statement from attorney William Kunstler.

Collection includes six notebooks' worth of Stiller's handwritten notes (five from the trial, one from her interviews with members of the press following the interview), her press passes, a typed statement by defense lawyer William Kunstler, and her typed manuscript with handwritten annotations.

Dates for each notebook are listed below. Note that Stiller was present at the beginning and end of the trial only. Her notes do not include the day Bobby Seale was bound and gagged in the courtroom or the day his case was separated from the others. Her notes do include the sentencings for contempt of court but not for the conspiracy and incitement charges.

The Children's Movie Posters Collection consists of 51 oversize posters and photographic prints in 5 folders from children's animated and non-animated movies circa 1953-1957. Movie posters feature a wide range of children's movies based on fairy tales, children's literature, and original content such as "Cinderella", "Little Red Riding Hood", "Heidi", "Pippi Longstocking" and Santa Claus, Puss N' Boots and more produced from a variety of movie studios. The posters often include details on storylines and theater experiences. Some posters are sequels to other films within the collection.

Contains 51 oversize posters featuring children's animated and non-animated movies from Paramount, Columbia Pictures, Childhood Productions Inc., K. Gordon Murray Productions Inc., and others. Posters show adapations of fairy tales and other common children's stories such as those pertaining to Cinderella, Santa Claus, Little Red Riding Hood, Heidi, Pippi Longstocking, and more. Also contains eight photographic prints from the movie "Puss N' Boots (1963)" Range of posters date approximately from 1953-1987 with several left undated. Posters often feature different art styles, mention highlights of the movie, and may advertise showtimes or giveaways.

Finding aid for the Cigar Makers' International Union Collection which includes corrrespondence, internal records, and publicity materials relating to the Cadillac Michigan Local 393 chapter of the Cigar Makers' Internation Union dating from 1896 to 1910.

The Cigar Makers' International Union Collection (1896-1910) contains 0.5 linear feet of the organizations internal documents, correspondence, a ledger of membership dues, union application forms in German, and a variety of printed items relating to public promotion of the union. Among the correspondence are numerous appeals requesting support for ongoing strikes to various affiliates, including but not limited to: the Lithographers' Union, the Stove Mounters' and Steel Ranger Workers' Union, the United Garment Workers of America, the Pie Bakers' Union and more. A notable letter includes a union statement signed by P.J. McArdle, activist and president of the Amalgamated Association of Iron, Steel, and Tin Workers.

The membership and dues ledger from the Local 393 Cigar Makers' International Union (Cadillac, MI) has entries beginning in 1896 through early 1901. Additionally, among the publicity materials are two posters on linen fabric promoting union made cigars to the general public.

The Citizens Committee for Constitutional Liberties was established to work for the repeal of the McCarran Act and other legislation authorizing surveillance of political activities. Records include files of executive secretary Miriam Friedlander, including correspondence with Committee members, other civil liberties organizations, and members of Congress, and drafts of publications, press releases, and speeches. Correspondents include Lee H. Ball, Carl Braden, Gus Hall, Linus Pauling, Norman Thomas, and Willis Uphaus.

The Citizens Committee for Constitutional Liberties collection documents the activities of the organization. The records have been divided into four series: Office Business, Governmental, Photographs, and Printed Material.

Files from CCCL's office have been placed into the Office Business series dating from 1962-1963. These include office correspondence, financial information, as well as speeches given at CCCL rallies by members of the organization or its supporters: Dr. Willard Uphaus, Moe Fishman, Paul Ross, Benjamin Davis, and others.

The Governmental series, 1960-1973, contains materials pertaining to CCCL's involvement with government agencies charged in some way with the enforcement of the McCarran Act. Included are letters exchanged with congressman and senators, including letters from former Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy and former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. This series also contains testimony given by the organization before the Subversive Activities Control Board, information on the McCarran Act, the Smith Act, and the Emergency Detention Act, and acts, bills, and propositions related to the CCCL's causes.

The Photograph series includes photographs of supposed detention camps for foreign-born citizens.

The Printed Material series has magazines and newspaper clippings relevant to the organization and its causes. Also included in this series are Congressional Records excerpts, pamphlets published by the CCCL, scrapbooks, and political cartoons.

Henry Buck graduated from the University of Michigan in 1858 and was granted an M.A. degree in 1861. He was admitted to the bar and practiced law briefly in Grand Rapids. He joined the 51st Illinois Infantry Regiment of Volunteers, becoming an acting First Lieutenant on June 15, 1862, and was placed in command of his company about January 15, 1863. On September 19, 1863, at the Battle of Chickamauga, he was killed instantly with a shot in the head. The letters and diary are entirely concerned with his experiences and observations while serving with the Union Army. A biography of Buck, and his obituary, are included in the papers.

Within this collection is Buck's diary (the original, damaged by a bullet), a transcribed copy of the diary (hand unknown), Buck's letters home to his family in Ypsilanti, his obituary, a map of the Battlefield of Stone River, and his officers' bars (indicators of rank).

The collection contains material related primarily to Langbord's long friendship with Emma Goldman. It includes correspondence, clippings, portraits of Goldman, and miscellaneous material related to Goldman including her Russian passport, US citizenship document, and affidavits witnessing Goldman's marriage. It also contains a signed will by Alexander Berkman.

The collection consists mainly of documents belonging to and relating to Emma Goldman. Goldman was a close friend of the Langbord family, and upon her death the Langbords, through Jeanne Levey in Chicago, were given the personal documents Goldman considered important enough to carry with her. They included identification papers, publishing contracts, legal documents, and some letters. Additional material includes clippings saved by Eva Langbord, correspondence, and photographs. A few partial transcriptions of Goldman's letters to Berkman can be found in Goldman's correspondence file; the whereabouts of the originals are unknown. The collection, though small, is divided into four series: Clippings, Correspondence, Emma Goldman, and Misc. materials. The Clippings file contains newspaper articles saved by Eva Langbord, relating mainly to Emma Goldman. The Emma Goldman series includes Goldman's Russian passport, her U.S. citizenship document (signed 16 October, 1908), and various other identification cards from France, Germany, andEngland. This series also contains two affidavits signed by the Rabbi who performed the marriage ceremony between Goldman and Jacob Kerschner in February 1887. Also included are affidavits signed by Helene Hochstein and Sam Cominsky, who witnessed the marriage. The publishing contracts for Emma Goldman include those for The Autobiography of Emma Goldman, My Disillusionment in Russia, and The Voyage of the Buford. The Misc. materials series contains materials of Alexander Berkman, including his handwritten last will, signed 11/22/35. The series also contains three portraits of Goldman, including one taken by Eugene Hutchinson (Chicago) and one signed by S. Flechine (Paris). The third portrait is signed by Goldman. There is also a snapshot of Agnes Inglis (1928).
