Human Gene Therapy Initiative records, 1988-1992

Molecular Medicine and Genetics Division established within the Department of Internal Medicine in 1991 to coordinate aspects of University of Michigan research as part of the Human Genome Project, an international effort to identify and map the genetic structure of the human chromosomes. Planning records from the University of Michigan Internal Medicine Molecular Medicine and Genetics Division relating to the unit's participation in human gene therapy; include minutes, development and feasibility studies, and a copy of the program proposal, "Experimental Models of Gene Therapy."

The records of the University of Michigan Department of Internal Medicine Molecular Medicine and Genetics Division, dating from 1988 to 1992, document some of the earliest gene therapy endeavors, centering on successful efforts to establish a Human Genome Center at the university. The bulk of the records focus on the development of the program project grant, "Experimental Models of Gene Therapy." The collection, organized in four series, includes Human Gene Therapy Initiative (an early effort to establish a Human Genome Center at the University of Michigan), Scientific Basis for Gene Therapy, Experimental Models of Gene Therapy, and Center for Excellence in Gene Therapy files. Formed in 1996, the M-Pathways Project was charged with the design and implementation of new administrative information systems for the University of Michigan. Until this point, administrative business transactions were performed using the Michigan Terminal System (MTS).Includes a prospectus describing the M-Pathways Project and its goals entitled M-Pathways Connecting People and Information: Project Description and Request for Comments. Also contains end user training manuals and printouts of email announcements and the electronic newsletter "SA Update" published by the Student Administration System.

The M-Pathways Project Publications are divided into two series: Unit Publications and Sub-Unit Publications. The bulk of the publications document the training offered to prepare instructors to teach and university staff to learn the new data system.

Formed in 1996, the M-Pathways Project was charged with the design and implementation of new administrative information systems for the University of Michigan, which had previously used the Michigan Terminal System (MTS). As part of this project, the University was a Beta partner for the development of the PeopleSoft Student Administrative System. Includes Strategic Data Plan, project charter, scope documents, project methodology, performance support plans and project design and implementation deliverables relating to the organization and processes of the M-Pathways Project. Also contains archived websites and snapshots of the Lotus Notes databases used to store the design deliverables for the project. The databases include information related to the technical infrastructure, technical issues, and development of technical standards.

When the M-Pathways Project started in the Fall of 1996, several decisions were made about the way the design and implementation of the five new information systems would proceed. One of these decisions was how to organize project documentation. It was decided to centralize the team's work in a number of Lotus Notes databases. While project communications within Lotus Notes indicate that using "Notes" was very new for most project members, however, it was considered the most useful electronic storage format at the time. Several databases were initially set up, and over the course of the project additional databases were added. The earliest databases include the Big Ten Discussion and the Strategic Data Plan Documentation Library. For each of the databases, whether stored in paper or electronic format, the archivist has documented the original structure and views available within the database. This documentation includes title of database, date created, quantity, bulk dates, preservation format, and database views. This information is in a folder titled "Archivist's Documentation on Lotus Notes Databases" located in Box 1 of the record group. The record group consists of six series: Communications, Organizational, Student Administration, Technology Administration, Videotape, and Website.

The bulk of the publications document the exhibits mounted by the Museum of Art and those developed by other museums that were exhibited at the museum. The record group documents the museum's exhibitions and installations of the permanent collection and complementary interpretive programming. Records include exhibition files; executive committee minutes and director's correspondence; photographs; publicity files; and material related to the Museum Practice Program.

The records of the University of Michigan Museum of Art document its exhibition program, administration and its educational function through the Museum Practice Program. The UMMA record group has been arranged into seven series: Exhibition Files, Executive Files, Photographs, Publicity, Museum Practice Program, Historical Background, and Docents. The records include correspondence, committee minutes, publicity material and photographs. The Publications series (0.2 linear foot) is arranged in one subseries: Unit Publications.

The Unit Publications subseries includes promotional brochures for the children's program called the Dino Club, as well as brochures describing the planetarium and detailing how visitors can organize group trips to the museum. Calendars describe the various workshops offered by the Exhibit Museum on Saturdays and through the summer in 1992 and 1993. There are also invitations and press releases from this same time period. There is also a complete run of the newsletter The Display Case which documents the activities of the Exhibit Museum. It was first published in 1987 and continues to the present. The Dino Club News was first issued in 1997. It focuses on children and the various child-oriented activities and programs sponsored by the museum.

A research and teaching museum at the University of Michigan, one of four units of the University Museum. Records include museum directors' topical files and correspondence; minutes, reports, and correspondence of museum committees; photographs; and various publications, largely about the museum. Subjects concern the collections, expeditions, and other activities of the museum, especially during the administrations of directors Joseph B. Steere, Alexander Ruthven, Frederick Gaige, James S. Rogers, and Theodore Hubbell.

The Museum of Zoology record group includes not so much the complete records of the Museum of Zoology but rather significant documents pertaining to its history which have been assembled and preserved over the years by the museum staff. The photographs in this collection are of special interest since they document the early years of the museum, especially under Alexander Grant Ruthven. The records have been divided into six series: Directors' Topical Files; Directors' Correspondence; Committee Minutes, Reports, and Correspondence; Index Card Files; Photographs; and Publications.
