This collection is made up of correspondence and legal documents pertaining to Martha Bradstreet of northern New York State. Much of the material pertains to Bradstreet's efforts to recover titles to her inherited land along the Mohawk River. The collection also contains materials related to Samuel Bradstreet and a group of Civil War letters from Silas E. Crandall to Phoebe Bradstreet.
The Martha Bradstreet Papers are divided into subseries of Martha Bradstreet Correspondence (126 items) and Martha Bradstreet Documents (25 items). The correspondence, including letters by and to Martha Bradstreet, largely pertains to her legal and financial affairs. Many items concern disputes over the land she inherited in upstate New York. Bradstreet's personal correspondence includes letters that she received from her children while traveling and letters to her children and others about their personal activities, such as her daughter Sarah's return to an abusive husband (November 26, 1840). Bradstreet's children wrote to one another about their personal lives, their mother's legal difficulties, and finances. The series' legal documents concern Bradstreet's New York property disputes, the will of Elizabeth Livius, and a civil suit between Elizabeth C. Bennett and Washington Garlock. A map of Mary Bradstreet's land along the Mohawk River is housed in the Map Division.
The Samuel Bradstreet Correspondence (138 items), dated 1800-1866, reflects the contentious relationship between Martha Bradstreet, her brother Samuel, and her husband, Matthew Codd, particularly with regard to real property and inheritance. The series includes several items written by Samuel's sons and grandsons.
The S. E. Crandall and Phoebe Bradstreet Correspondence (12 items) largely consists of letters that S. E. Crandall sent to Phoebe Bradstreet, whom he addressed as "Mother," while serving in the 17th Army Corps during the Civil War. He discussed his experiences in and around Atlanta, Georgia. He also sent letters before and after his military service about his life in Minnesota and about possible conflicts with the Sioux Indians (June 6, 1863).

This collection (9 items) contains 7 letters that Charles Eugene Flandrau wrote to Frances M. Henderson, a friend in Whitesboro, New York, after moving to Minnesota in 1853, as well as 2 newspaper clippings regarding Flandrau's work as an agent for the Sioux tribe and as a Minnesota Supreme Court justice.
Flandrau wrote 6 letters between November 18, 1853, and November 16, 1857, providing numerous details about his life in the Minnesota Territory. He wrote from Saint Paul on November 18, 1853 (16 pages), and February 4, 1854 (8 pages), discussing his journey west, the scenery, and his impressions of Minnesota residents. He also described lead and coal mines in northwestern Illinois. Flandrau encountered Native Americans during his travels and after his arrival in Minnesota, and he commented on the region's social customs, such as the influence of French settlers and the "aristocracy" of European and Native American mixed-race families (February 4, 1854).
Flandrau wrote 3 letters from Traverse des Sioux, Minnesota (near Saint Peter), between April 1854 and April 1855, focusing on his life and travels in the wilderness and on population growth throughout the state and within the town. He also described Native American customs and discussed the local court system. In one of these letters, he enclosed "the first flower of Spring" (April 18, 1855). Flandrau wrote again from Stillwater, Minnesota, about his judicial career (November 16, 1857, 4 pages). In his final letter, he reflected on his life and on his relationship with Frances (July 5, 1888, 7 pages). Two newspaper clippings relate to Flandrau's experiences as an agent to the Sioux Indians ([April 22, 1857]) and to his appointment as an associate judge for the Minnesota Supreme Court ([1867]).

This collection (approximately 200 items) contains 24 manuscript essays and writings, original artwork (approximately 40 items), and around 140 printed proof sheets by artist Edwin Whitefield between the 1840s and 1880s. The collection also includes 2 autograph albums that Mabel Whitefield kept between 1876 and 1883.
The Manuscripts series (24 items) contains essays, charts, notes, and fragments; a draft of Edwin Whitefield's The Bible Its Own Interpreter; and 2 autograph albums kept by Mabel Whitefield. The essays mainly relate to Whitefield's travels in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and the Dakota Territory in the 1840s and 1850s; Whitefield described landscapes, and some of his writings refer to specific drawings. A series of essays concerns immigration to Minnesota, including several short pieces about opportunities for settlers. Whitefield's other writings include an argument for increasing workers' wages; a letter about his son's conduct; notes about the Bible; 2 manuscript tables of the populations of major U.S. cities at each national census between 1790 and 1890; and a copied extract from the Encyclopedia Britannica about Moses.
Edwin Whitefield's The Bible Its Own Interpreter manuscript (approximately 220 pages) is made up of notes and clippings about passages from scripture and Biblical subjects. The volume contains a preface, index, and printed title page. Mabel Whitefield kept her 2 autograph albums, which contain inscriptions and poetry from family and friends, between 1876 and 1883.
The Original Artwork series is made up of Edwin Whitefield works, including 2 oil paintings; approximately 35 graphite, ink, and watercolor sketches; and 2 sketchbooks. One oil painting (1885, 20"x16") is a country landscape with a man herding cows over a bridge. The other painting (undated, 30"x20") is a mountain landscape, with a man and cows resting beside a river or lake. Approximately 35 individual graphite, ink, and watercolor sketches depict houses, bridges, landscapes, and buildings. Whitefield identified many of the views as locations in Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Edwin Whitefield's 2 sketchbooks contain illustrations of buildings, persons, and bird's eye views of cities and landscapes.
The Printed Items series includes proof sheets from the 1880, 1882, and 1889 editions of The Homes of Our Forefathers (approximately 75 colored or tinted lithographs), approximately 65 colored lithographs of botanical specimens by Whitefield, and one printed view of Newburyport, Massachusetts.

This collection contains correspondence received by Martha Barker, concerning such topics as motherhood, women's education, and everyday household matters. All but one of these letters in this collection are addressed to Martha, or Mart, as she is called by her family and friends. Several letters in this collection include items such as dress scraps, locks of hair, and pressed flowers.
The letters from Mart's many family members living in Illinois and Minnesota provide information about experiences of every-day female, and to a lesser extent, male settlers in these midwestern states. Over a period of more than thirty years, these people wrote about domestic matters such as sewing, quilting, and soap making. They wrote about economic topics, including the year's harvest, and dress making businesses. Other topics included marriage, holiday celebrations, education, and child rearing. For example, Mart's sister [Kate] wrote on May 24, 1873 about the difficulty of motherhood, "You want to know how I get along with four children I dont get along at all I am half crazy."
Of particular interest are letters from Mart's brother Milton, who wrote about the lives of his daughters. In a January 17, 1897 letter, he described the process that the women had undergone to become teachers. He discussed Normal Schools, Normal Boards for licensing, teacher salaries -- which ranged from $30.00 to $45.00 per month -- and teacher work conditions. He noted that the independence that his daughters had gained from this profession was pleasing to him.
