This collection is made up of 3 letters that Chivis H. Stone wrote to Rose Kohler of Bay City, Michigan, while working in and around Eagle Pass, Texas, in October 1917 and February 1918. Stone discussed his life in Texas and his work on military telephones, phone lines, and related equipment; he sometimes drove to other areas in Texas, such as Marfa and Del Rio, and often complained about his truck. He occasionally mentioned local residents, including a Mexican washerwoman who had become infected with smallpox while working with soldiers' laundry. In his second letter, he shared the story of two deserters who had stolen horses, guns, and ammunition before being caught in Mexico. Stone expressed his gratitude for Bay City residents' charitable efforts for U.S. soldiers and reported his own purchase of two Liberty bonds; he believed that the bonds showed united support for President Wilson and, by extension, the American war effort. Stone's leisure activities included attending events at the local YMCA, reading and writing letters, and watching movies. His letters include many statements of his love for Rose, whom he had married before writing his final letter.
