Wife of University of Michigan President, James B. Angell and member of Collegiate Sorosis. Angell served as the president of the Women’s Foreign Missionary Society of Congressional Church. The Daughters of the American Revolution Ann Arbor chapter has been named after Sarah Caswell Angell. Collection includes Sarah Caswell Angell's diaries and letters concerning Ann Arbor and the University of Michigan life, her church activities, social life, the Daughters of the American Revolution activities, family affairs, and travels to Turkey and China.

The Sarah Caswell Angell papers primarily consist of her her diaries and correspondence, as well as records of her father, Alexis Caswell, and other family members. While much or the correspondence is personal in nature (specifically to her friends and family), the collection includes a folder with materials focused on her work with the Chicago World’s Fair as well as the Ann Arbor chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. The diaries included within the collection document some of Angell’s daily activities as well as describe her trips to China and Turkey with her husband.

The Edwin Denby papers, dating from 1845-1846 and 1880-1929, are organized into five series: Correspondence, Articles and Speeches, Topical Files, Personal/Biographical, and Photographs. Denby's papers document his political career as United States Representative and Secretary of the Navy, and include relevant information on such topics as the United States Navy, the Panama Canal and the Teapot Dome Scandal.

The Angell papers documents Angell's academic and diplomatic career. There is extensive material on all phases of University of Michigan business, particularly Angell's contacts with the state legislature, the board of regents, faculty relations, and the various schools, colleges, departments and divisions. Much of the correspondence and the Angell diaries relate to his diplomatic missions, higher education in the United States, and family matters.

Autobiography and biographical material; correspondence, diaries and travelogues, and writings concerning in part his collecting expeditions for the University Museum to South America, China, the Philippines, and other parts of the Far East; also papers reflecting his thoughts on science, religion, philosophy and evolution; and photographs.

The papers of Joseph Beal Steere consist of four feet of manuscript and visual material, one oversize volume, and one oversize folder covering the years 1861-1941. The collection is organized into seven series: Autobiography/Biography, Professional and Published Correspondence, Diaries and Travelogues, Writings, Photographs, and Correspondence with family and friends (1861-1926).

Papers include personal and professional correspondence, diaries, travel journals, drafts of books, letter books, reports and printed materials concerning his work with the Interstate Commerce Commission, his activities as an expert witness in railroad compensation and tax cases, and University of Michigan affairs.

Active member of Ann Arbor, MI community, Lois Thompson McLaughlin was the daughter of the University of Michigan president James Burrill Angell and Sarah Caswell. The collection includes diaries from McLaughlin's trip to China, as well as correspondence and a newspaper clipping regarding her marriage to UM professor Andrew McLaughlin.

The Lois Thompson McLaughlin papers primarily consist of diaries and correspondence written by McLaughlin. The correspondence is mostly personal in nature. It includes childhood letters to McLaughlin’s aunts and uncles, as well as letters to friends during her time in China. Letters to McLaughlin’s father, James Angell, and mother, Sarah Caswell Angell, are found in the collection as well. Collection also includes three diaries dated 1880 to 1881, during which McLaughlin visited Peking, China with the rest of the Angell family. These entries offer descriptions of day-to-day events and activities, and even contain some of her drawings. One newspaper clipping is held in the collection with a detailed account of her wedding including the guests who attended, and the location of the ceremonies.

The Thomas James O’Brien papers consist of ledgers and journals, scrapbooks/photograph albums containing clippings, photographs and mementos from his diplomatic career, and miscellaneous correspondence, clippings, and speech material. The Collection has been arranged into the following series: Scrapbooks / Photograph Albums; Financial records; and Correspondence and other papers.

Teacher, Inspector of Schools in the Philippine Islands (1901-1905), and Presbyterian clergyman. Papers include biographical information, education and teaching materials, church miscellanea, diaries, correspondence and photographs.

The papers of Frederick G. Behner measure one linear foot and are contained in two series: Papers and Photographs. The Papers series is further divided into biographical information; education and teaching; church; personal materials; correspondence; and general materials.

The Biographical Information consists of photocopies of accounts that Behner's son, Frederick G. Behner, Jr., wrote using his father's diaries and oral accounts. The Education and Teaching file includes Behner's teaching certificates (1893-1895), his university papers from North Central College, his students' papers from the Philippine Islands, and some papers from Xenia Seminary School. His university papers are on a number of subjects, as are his students' papers, and are interesting as they reflect many social and political facets of the turn of the century.

The Church papers include his licensure and requests from various churches asking Behner to work at their church. The Personal file series includes Behner's diaries for the years 1901 through 1905 and chronicles his journey from Ohio down to the Philippine Islands, his years of teaching there, an extended trip home with major stops in Palestine and Europe, and his wedding. The 1901 diary is accompanied by a partial transcript. Also included a published volume of transcript of diary titled "One Man's Journey to the Philippine Islands: the Thomasite Adventure, 1901-1905." The Correspondence series (1896-1904) is very brief and arranged chronologically, containing only several letters. One letter of interest explains the purpose of the schools in the Philippine Islands; another is a permit to carry a shotgun. The General Materials series is also very brief; it contains two steamship liner booklets with notations by Behner and a certificate indicating that Behner was a member of the National Geographic Society.

Official communications, including orders and promotion and appointment material; biographical sketches of residents of Ifugao Subprovince; printed material; and photographs. The collection also includes "Record Historico. Del Settlement de Quiangan, Sub-Provincia Ifugao, Provincia Montafiosa" by Second Lieutenant Maximo Meimban, P.C.

The collection includes official constabulary documents, including orders and promotion and appointment material. In addition, there are biographical sketches of residents of Ifugao Subprovince and miscellaneous clippings and printed material. Spanish-language "Record Historico. Del Settlement de Quiangan, Sub-Provincia Ifugao, Provincia Montafiosa" (translated from Spanish as "Historical Record of the Quiangan Settlement, Ifugao Sub-Province, Montafiosa Province") by Lt. Maximo Meimban, describes Ifugao land and villages. Within the Photograph series will be found six albums containing photos of Philippine Constabulary and U.S. Army personnel, and other colonial officials, Philippine people of the Mountain and Nueva Vizcaya provinces including Bontoc, Igorot, and Ifugao people, headhunter ceremony, travel in China, and a visit of Dean C. Worcester to Ifugao.
