Blaustein family papers, 1920-2018 (majority within 1937-1945)

Correspondence of the Blaustein family of New York. Karl Blaustein and his son Albert (who received his BA from the University of Michigan) were lawyers. Karl and his wife Rose also had a daughter, Marjorie, who was a writer and a journalist. This collection includes correspondence between Karl and Rose, and their children Albert and Marjorie Blaustein. Many of the letters are written to Albert during his time as a student at the University of Michigan and during his career as a journalist and service member.

This collection contains the Blaustein family correspondence. Materials include correspondence between Karl, Rose, Albert, and Marjorie, as well as newspaper clippings and other ephemera. The first binder began in the summer of 1937, before Albert left for the University of Michigan. Rose, Marjorie and Albert were on vacation, and Karl wrote to them in their absence. The next six binders include letters from Albert's time at university. The first of the six binders contains a collection of Rose and Marjorie's letters to Albert. The next five binders are organized by date rather than sender. The remaining binders contain letters from Albert's time in Chicago and in the military. In these letters, the family discussed daily life and politics, especially related to Nazism and World War II. Most of the letters were written by Karl to Albert.

The remaining correspondences are organized into folders by recipient. These folders are arranged chronologically and contain correspondence and ephemera. Three of the folders contain letters from Marjorie and her parents during her time at the University of Chicago. She wrote about her efforts as a writer as well as daily life and the war. Another set of folders contains letters from Karl and Rose during the summer of 1943. Rose was traveling, and she wrote about her trips to Marjorie in Chicago, Wisconsin, and various Jewish summer resorts.

The remaining folders contain greeting cards, telegrams, and various letters dating from 1920 to 1965. One of these folders contains ephemera from Harvard and Karl's school papers.

A digital resource is also included. Carmen D. Valentino, the seller of the collection, provided the resource, and it contains research on each member of the Blaustein family. The document also details the contents of the collection. Included is an inventory of letters and their authors, as well as some transcribed letters. Information in this resource has not been verified by Bentley staff.

The record group has been arranged into the following series: Minutes; Published Material; Yearly Files; Officers Files; Membership records; Topical Files; Genealogical records; Scrapbooks, Historians Albums; and Visual Materials. Of interest are files relating in part to the chapter's activities during the Spanish-American War and World War I. The genealogical records include cemetery records for various Washtenaw County cemeteries.

Founded in 1970, the Ecology Center of Ann Arbor is a grassroots community organization committed to increasing environmental awareness. Records include meeting minutes, financial statements, correspondence, news clippings, photographs and publications relating to the activities and functions of the organization, especially in the areas of recycling, energy conservation, and ecology.

The Ecology Center of Ann Arbor records are divided into four series: Administrative Records, Topical files, Publications and Publicity, and Visual Materials. The records document the efforts of this grassroots community organization to increase environmental awareness through the establishment of recycling and energy conservation programs, and by publicizing the need for pesticide control and responsible solid waste disposal among other issues. With recent accessions, the division between Administrative Records and Publications and Publicity is less distinct, as center publications were often included with planning and meeting materials. Researchers should check both series when looking for material printed by and about the Ecology Center.

Both the Topical Files and Visual Materials series are divided into sub-series. The Topical Files series is divided into sub-series based on the date range represented by the materials in the order in which they were processed. There is significant overlap between sub-series. The Visual Materials series is divided into sub-series based on the type of records represented.

The bulk of the collection is topical files maintained by the center regarding policies, campaigns, lawsuits, and environmental activism, relevant to center activities. Materials included in the Topical Files series include lawsuits, meetings, and documentation related to DOW Chemical Company; medical waste and incinerators; pesticides, particularly dioxin, and their environmental impact; and environmental and racial justice. This series also includes lawsuits with Gelman Sciences and Lindane, and partnership materials with the Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition, Healthcare Without Harm, and the Michigan Network for Children's Environmental Health, among other local organizations.

Bishops files, records of executive and administrative bodies and of diocesan organizations, staff files, parishes and mission's materials, and visual materials and sound recordings.

The records of the diocese of Michigan have been arranged into the following series: Bishops' files, Executive and administrative bodies, Diocesan organizations, Diocesan programs, Diocesan staff, Parishes and missions, Clergy, Audio and visual material, and Miscellaneous.

The record group is most valuable for its documentation of the history of the diocese and the individual churches within its administration, with a lesser amount of material pertaining to religious functions performed and to the operation of diocesan administrative groups and departments. For a number of reasons, there is scant material pertaining to the administration of the diocesan office or to the special programs that have been initiated by it over the years. Some of this material may be found in the papers of individual bishops whose papers have also come to the library and are separately cataloged. These include Samuel McCoskry, Samuel Smith Harris, Charles D. Williams, Herman Page, and Richard Emrich.

The records of the League of Women Voters of the Ann Arbor Area have been arranged into the following series: Organizational Records, 1942-1966 (mainly Mrs. Ivan Duff files); Health Care and Planning Issues, 1966-1973; Administrative, 1920-1990; Elections, 1946-1982; Issues, 1944-1981: and Topical files, 1969-1983. As the records came from different donors, there is some inevitable overlap between the various series.

Penrod/Hiawatha Company postcard collection, 1950s-2017

The Penrod/Hiawatha Company collection is mainly comprised of postcards, although some supplemental photographic items directed toward tourists is also included. The postcards, numbering more than 5,000, primarily are of the Michigan landscape and its towns and cities, covering every region of the state. Typical postcard themes dominate, particularly natural scenery, outdoor recreation, and shopping districts. The postcards date from the 1950s through the opening decades of the twenty-first century, although very few display copyright dates. The collection is divided into the following series.

As batches of postcards are received every years, it was decided to arrange the items in blocks of time according to the date of their accession. Thus for the researcher interested in a specific city, it will be necessary to examine the listing for each of the series.

The Alva Gordon Sink Alumnae Chapter was established in 1959/60 as an offshoot of the University of Michigan Alumnae Association. The Sink Group provides financial support and mentorship to women attending the University of Michigan through scholarships, annual fundraising and social events.
