Board of Regents (University of Michigan) agendas, 1996-2016

The Board of Regents is the governing body of the University of Michigan. The records include agendas for the Regents meetings, with included exhibits, and reports on university finances, promotions, and degree confirmations.

Since 1996 the archives has been receiving agenda books immediately following each meeting of the Board of Regents. These agendas are published volumes which serve as a public record of the meetings. They contain detailed agendas for each meeting as well as some exhibits from the meetings and reports on university finances, promotions, and degree confirmations. Those agenda books comprise this collection.

These records include various items: Regents communications, reports, recommendations, and other documents presented to the Regents for consideration at their meetings. They form the most complete record of the Regents' actions. As the official governing body of the university, the Regents deal with virtually every aspect of university policy and life. The records of the Regents reflect this broad range of interests and authority. But while the documentation is wide-ranging, it is not continuous. Certain types of records are continually before the Regents, particularly information regarding salaries, leaves of absence, appointments to faculty positions, and formal approval of degrees conferred upon students. More often, however, the Regents are presented with a specific problem and asked to resolve it through the creation of policy. After the creation and successful implementation of a policy, the situation which caused the issue to arise is usually no longer a matter of Regental concern. The Regents' records reflect this pattern of action. Issues arise, are resolved, and then are supplanted by new concerns.

The University of Michigan committee appointed by president James Duderstadt to facilitate the preservation, promotion, and appreciation of the history and traditions. Material includes oral history interviews with university presidents and their wives, administrative and academic officers, regents and faculty members, as well as administrative records.

The bulk of the History and Traditions Committee records consists of interviews (recordings and transcripts) with University of Michigan presidents, wives of presidents, regents, and administrators. Also included materials pertaining to the University of Michigan history, and administrative records.

Vice Provost for Medical Affairs (University of Michigan) records, 1983-1994

Position established in 1983 to unify the administrative reporting structure between the Hospital, Medical School, and the university's executive officers. George D. Zuidema was appointed Vice Provost for Medical Affairs in 1984, serving until his retirement in 1994 at which time the office was disbanded and the responsibilities dispersed. Records of the Vice Provost George D. Zuidema relating to integrated planning within the medical and health sciences, including completion of the replacement hospital project, information systems, managed health care, and research priorities. Records also include documentation of AIDS initiatives, substance abuse, transplant policy and ethics, and external service with the General Motors Medical Committee for Automotive Safety.

The records of the Vice Provost for Medical Affairs document a remarkable decade in the history of the University of Michigan Medical Center. Beginning with the appointment of George Zuidema in 1983, the records document the completion of the massive Replacement Hospital Project, and by the time of his retirement in 1994, provide evidence of the increasing competition brought about by managed health care.

The Publications of the Affirmative Action Office measures 3 linear feet and covers the period from 1973 to 1994. The subgroup is divided into two series: Unit Publications and Sub-Unit Publications.

Unit Publications include Minority Student Reports, Reports to the Regents and a complete run of the newsletter In the Affirmative.

Sub-Unit Publications consist of materials produced by units within the Affirmative Action Office. These include the Council for Disability Concerns and the Study Committee on the Status of Lesbians and Gay Men.

Digitized select documents relating to the Black Action Movement (BAM) I, II, and III on the University of Michigan campus, 1970-1987.

The following selection of documents, mostly from the records of the Office of the President with some articles from The Michigan Daily and the University Record, is intended to provide an overview of the Black Action Movement (BAM) demands and the university's immediate response in each of the three phases of the Black Action Movement. It represents a small portion of the documentation of BAM contained in the records of various university units, personal papers, photograph collections, and publications held by the Bentley Historical Library. All the records are open to researchers, subject to some limited restrictions (student records protected by FERPA; personnel records, and certain administrative records subject to review).

Office of Budgets and Planning (University of Michigan) records, 1970-1979

Administrative unit formed by President Robben Fleming to service the needs of the Long Range Planning Committee, the Budget Priorities Committee, and the Program Evaluation Committee. Minutes of meetings, budget material, and supporting papers.

The minutes and reports for each of the four committees are filed in the collection. The Long Range Planning Committee was the most prolific of the four and the records of the full committee as well as its many subcommittees make up the bulk of the collection. One of its subcommittees, School and College Planning, maintained extensive records of their meetings and subsequent communications with the various schools within the university, such as Architecture and Design, Dentistry and Music, regarding the projected needs of those schools. The Budget Priorities Committee records contain a great deal of information regarding the budget, including requests for program revisions and proposals for capital projects.

The papers are arranged by committee. In addition to folder level description, the first folder of the collection contains an item by item listing of documents within the various folders. Some items, particularly from folders containing supporting material, were removed and either transferred to the Bentley Library's Printed Collection or returned to the Office of Academic Planning and Analysis. All items removed have been noted on the document list.

There are also four folders of collected materials relating to the Black Action Movement from 1970.

Affirmative Action Office (University of Michigan) records, 1969 - 1993

Records of the administrative office responsible for developing and coordinating affirmative action programs for women, minorities and disabled faculty, staff, and students. Documentation includes topical files, minutes, reports, photographs and audio and video tapes. This record group also includes records of the Commission for Minority Affairs and the Commission for Women.

The records of the Affirmative Action Office span 1969 - 1993 and document the activities of the office and its predecessors, and provide information about affirmative action programs at the university and the status of minority, women, the disabled and other groups on campus. The records have come to the library in a number of accessions.

The Affirmative Action Office record group is organized into five subgroups: Affirmative Action Office, 1969 - 1993; Commission for Minority Affairs, 1971 - 1980; Commission for Women, 1970 - 1985; Council for Minority Concerns, 1979 - 1983; and Advisory Committee on Affirmative Action Programs, 1977 - 1986. The Affirmative Action Office subgroup includes records created or acquired by the Office. The other subgroups represent various university units that were merged into or whose function were taken over by the Affirmative Action Office.

John Chavis papers, 1965-1971

Historian and administrator at University of Michigan and Tuskegee Institute. Minutes, reports and correspondence relating primarily to enrollment of black students at University of Michigan, including material concerning his work with the Steering Committee for the Development of Academic Opportunities, the Opportunity Award Program, and the Exchange Program with Tuskegee Institute.

The collection contains material relating primarily to Chavis' University of Michigan appointments, and his committee work and interest in equal opportunities in higher education for minority students. The bulk of the collection dates from 1969 to 1971. Memoranda and reports from his work on the Governor's Task Force on Equal Opportunity in Higher education, and the Steering Committee for the Development of Academic Opportunity comprise the bulk of the collection. Also well documented is the Opportunity Awards Program. Several folders on minority enrollment and university recruitment efforts are also in the collection, as well as information on the summer research program for undergraduates and the Fresh Air Camp.

Chavis' non-university activities and interests are also documented. Articles and reports gathered by Chavis' are located in the collected information file, and Chavis' own writings are found in the Writings folder. One folder of information relating to Chavis' curator position at the Detroit Historical Museum is found in the Non-University series, as well as newsletters and correspondence from his involvement with the Detroit based social and scholarly organization, The Moors.
