The Louis Fead collection includes correspondence, scrapbooks, biographical information and other materials relating to his political and judicial career. Some of the files relate to the view from Michigan of the proposed reorganization of the US Supreme Court in 1937. There are also materials concerning the Newberry State Bank of which Fead was an officer. Also of interest are those materials relating to his service with the American Red Cross in France during World War I.

The collection contains mostly his research about the Chippewa, Ottawa, and Potawatomi versus the Regents of the University of Michigan, county history, biographical materials, maps, and papers of students.

The collection consists mostly of Dain’s materials relating to the Children of the Chippewa… versus the Regents of the UM trial, 1971-1980, including briefs, transcripts, orders, exhibits, depositions, his sworn statement, 1978, other legal documents, and newspaper clippings (copies); materials for county or city events he collected or helped create; papers of students or other people related to Michigan history; biographical materials; and some miscellaneous maps (copies). Other materials relating to the trial may be found in the Elmer White papers and in cataloged materials.

The papers of Clark J. Adams are arranged into three series: Biographical, Topical, and Visual Materials. The papers relate to his career as an attorney and public servant.

Justice on the Michigan Supreme Court, official in Scottish Rite Freemasonry, Sovereign Grand Commander, Supreme Council, Northern Jurisdiction. Correspondence and other topical files largely relating to activities and offices held within Scottish Rite Freemasonry.

The George Bushnell collection, except for a small series of personal and political correspondence, and some speeches, concerns Masonic organizations and activities. Prosecuting attorney, attorney general of Michigan, 1945-1946, and justice on the Michigan Supreme Court, 1946-1970. Correspondence and campaign material relating to his political interests, court agendas and topical files, and papers relating to the operation and activities of the state supreme court; also photographs.

This collection of John R. Dethmers papers, in addition to a few folders of correspondence and campaign materials from the 1930s, is comprised mainly of files from his service on the Michigan Supreme Court. Within the Correspondence series, there are letters from William W. Blackney, Mar. 19, 1942; Fred Bradley, Mar. 4, 1942; Albert J. Engel, Mar. 2, 1942; Bartel J. Jonkman, Mar. 6, 1942; Earl C. Michener, Mar. 2, 1942; Chase S. Osborn, Mar. 16, 1942; and Arthur H. Vandenberg, Mar. 4, 1942.

Correspondence with Adams' family concerning his activities as a student at University of Michigan and as Supreme Court justice; also topical files, speeches, and miscellaneous legal records.

The papers of Paul Adams concentrate on his years as a student at the University of Michigan,1926-1936,and on his years as a Michigan Supreme Court Justice, January 2,1962-January 1,1973. These papers include detailed letters to his family and topical files on his various interests and affairs. The correspondence file contains letters from former Governor Williams, Senator Philip A. Hart, Mrs. Chase Osborn, and other leading Michigan figures and politicians. His speech file includes topics on law, crime, politics, and religion.

The following collection contains Michigan Circuit Court Case No. 4305, Michigan Consolidated Gas Company materials, Michigan Public Service Commission, D3430, Michigan Public Service Commission, Michigan Supreme Court Case No. 46228, and other related materials.

The collection consists of five series:

Michigan Circuit Court (Isabella County), Case No. 4305-transcripts, proceedings, and exhibits, 1948-1952;

MCGC-hearing papers, service rates, correspondence, map of service, and exhibits on Gas Franchise, 1930s-1953;

Michigan Public Service Commission, D3430-evidence, transcripts, petitions, hearing papers, reports, proceedings, applications and authorities to modify gas rates, briefs, testimonies, etc., 1930s-1955;

Michigan Supreme Court, Case No. 46,228-exhibits, papers, brief, notices, records and resolution, 1930s-1954; and

Related materials, mostly correspondence, 1948-1953.

Student papers, 1930-1987 prepared for classes in history at the University of Michigan (primarily Michigan history class taught by Lewis G. VanderVelde, but also including research papers for classes taught by Sidney Fine and others); topics concern Michigan social and political history; Michigan biography and bibliography; and local community history.

The student papers are organized alphabetically by author in two series, which are similar in date range and topics covered. Topics of papers concern Michigan social and political history; Michigan biography and bibliography; local community history and University of Michigan history. A topical index to the papers is available in the first box of the collection.

Battle Creek attorney, justice, later chief justice of the Michigan Supreme Court. Correspondence, clippings, speeches, and topical files relating primarily to the ceremonial, out-of-court, responsibilities of a supreme court justice, and to her election campaigns in 1971 and 1980; also files concerning her interest in juvenile justice and the reapportionment of the Michigan Legislature and miscellaneous photographs.

Coleman Collection is arranged by series or topic: Biographical/Personal; Correspondence; Miscellaneous Topical File; Speeches; Supreme Court Topical Files; Miscellaneous; and Visual Materials. While a portion of the collection contains pre-1972 material, the bulk concerns the 1972-1982 period during which Judge Coleman served on the Michigan Supreme Court.
