Most entries concentrate on news of acquaintances, including reports of engagements, weddings, and travel, and on the author's household tasks, which included caring for a young child. The author sometimes named the books she read, occasionally recording facts gleaned from her reading of works such as Washington and His Generals and "Donovan's Adventures." Though the author did not consider herself a Roman Catholic, she attended a Catholic baptism and the consecration of the Bishop of Vincennes (October 24, 1847), both of which she described in her diary. She read works on religion and discussed religion with Catholic clergy.
