The Southeast Asia Lontar Collection contains seven lontar collected between 2019-2022 placed in one oversize box. Lontar are dried palm manuscripts with multiple sheets that depict stories, astronomy, illustrations, and other content primarily from Indonesia. The collection features lontar of varying languages and sizes.

A set of seven lontar (dried palm manuscripts consisting of multiple sheets, with a hole to connect each sheet by string) of various sizes from Indonesia. The lontar depict stories relating to Ramayana, Rama-Sita, Puranic literature, or depict moon phases along with propserous days through llustrations and/or text in mainly Balinese and Sasak langauges. Their outside covers, which are thicker pieces of bamboo or other wood, often have patterns that can help identify the contents.

Lontar no. 1: An accordion-type of lontar made from palm leaves with illustrated sheets and text. Possibly includes drawings depicting the Ramayana story.

Lontar no. 2: A type of lontar referred to as a prasi lontar, which are illustrated without text and retell epic stories in the Balinese language. Focuses on Rama-Sita stories.

Lontar no. 3: Written in the Sasak language, this Lontar is probably a Mahabharata edition. May have been created by a person who migrated to Lombok.

Lontar no. 4: A Balinese lontar consisting of the Ramayana story, identified through the spotted cover and illustrated engravings.

Lontar no. 5: An Indonesian lontar with drawings of the god Indra and his wife Indrani as well as a high priest and his wife. This type of lontar was influenced by India and Puranic literature.

Lontar no. 6: A Balinese lontar part of the wariga genre. Warigra lontar lists the days of the new moon and full moon. Also has a list of prosperous days for daily activities.

Lontar no. 7: A Balinese lontar with handwriting indicating possible origins in Western Lombok.

The Southern tour collection contains photographs from a traveling party's visit to several locations in the southern United States, including Civil War battlefields, in March 1885, as well as a printed booklet containing sketches of people and various locales.

The collection contains 19 card photographs (13 x 21 cm). Many of these photographs show groups of men at "Magnolia," at the site of the Battle of Seven Pines (Fair Oaks), by a New Orleans train depot, and at Castillo de San Marcos in Saint Augustine, Florida; in one photograph, several men are picking strawberries. Other images show a wooded area in Mississippi, relics on a battlefield, Fort Sumter, and Fort Moultrie near Charleston, S.C. The booklet, entitled "Taylor, His Sketch Book, 1885," contains reprinted drawings of men and women (often with captions which are occasionally humorous), and of buildings in Saint Augustine, Florida. Some of the drawings depict African Americans. The card mounted photographs are bound in a red leather wrapper with the title "136 March 13-28 1885" in gold on the cover.

Each photograph includes notation naming location, individuals, and some dates. Multiple photographs are missing. The first portion of the album shows various locations in Arizona including the Sentinel (Arizona), Gillespie Dam, San Xavier Mission and Grotto, Casa Grande Ruins, Wickenburg Mountains, Granite Dells, Hopi Point and Powell Memorial at the Grand Canyon, Painted Desert, and Canyon Lake. Locations in New Mexico include Elephant Butte Dam, Hot Springs, and Raton Pass. Auto camps shown include "Stumble Inn," (Tucson, Arizona), Rowe's Well Camp (near the Grand Canyon), and Texas Home Camp (Hot Springs, New Mexico). The last image is of the Oklahoma State Capitol.

Many captions name William and Mattie Mulholland in the photographs. Also included is one loose photograph of poodles from "Baby Doll Kennels," in Erie, Pennsylvania.

The album is 20.5 x 13.5 cm with black artificial leather covers.

Souvenir Photographs of “A Trip to Cuba” is a privately published photograph album that contains approximately 213 photographs taken during a 26-member excursion to Cuba in 1907 conducted by the South West Land Company of Cuba.

The album (35 x 27 cm) is bound in grey buckram and with the title "Cuban Trip '07" gilt stamped on the front. The name "Fred W. Adams" is also gilt stamped on the front while "Fred Adams Norman Adams Jan. 1907" can be found inscribed on a loose page tucked inside the front cover.

A printed title page is included indicating that the album's images were created during an expedition to Cuba "conducted under the auspices of The South West Land Co. of Cuba." in 1907 while also listing the traveling party's personnel and itinerary. Departing from Youngstown, Ohio, on January 4th, 1907, the group traveled to Washington, D.C., by train before departing for Havana via Tampa. Professional photographer R. W. Johnson of Pittsburgh is listed as the group's official photographer who produced the album's images.

The album begins with images taken in Washington, D.C., of the U.S. Capitol as well as a group portrait of the 26-member group piled into a D.C. sightseeing vehicle. In the latter image two pencil marks indicate the position of the album's former owner Fred Whittlesey Adams and his 13 year old son Norman (their presence is noted by pencil mark in several photographs). Subsequent images include a series depicting the party's travel by sea aboard the steamer Newhaven, views of Havana Harbor, street scenes and architectural profiles, Havana Cathedral, a cockfight, exterior and interior scenes from around Morro Castle, group portraits of Cuban agricultural laborers, views of Caibarién, images of produce being prepared for shipping, a group portrait of a family showing the mother allowing her infant to feed from a goat udder, views of the traveling party touring rural farmsteads and plantations, and a portrait of an Afro-Cuban carpenter.

This photograph album contains pictures taken during the World's Columbian Exposition (World's Fair) in Chicago, Illinois, in 1893. The album includes several interior views of the New Jersey educational exhibit in the Liberal Arts Building and exterior views of the exposition's large thematic buildings, individual state pavilions, international cultural exhibits, and statues.

This photograph album (31cm x 23cm) contains 105 pictures taken during the World's Columbian Exposition (World's Fair) in Chicago, Illinois, in 1893. The title Views of the World's Fair is stamped in gold on the front cover, along with an image of the Statue of the Republic. A second title, World's Fair Photographs, Including Views of the New Jersey Educational Exhibit, is printed on the first page. With the exception of two larger prints, items are pasted two to a page, above manuscript captions.

The album includes a group of rare interior views of the displays in the Liberal Arts Building. Featured are the New Jersey educational exhibit, the packing of displays after the fair's closure; views of international cultural exhibits; statues, and artifact displays. The majority of the album is comprised of more common exterior views of the exposition's large thematic and individual state pavilions. Many of the main structures, such as the Administration Building, Liberal Arts Building, Electricity Building, and the Palace of Mechanical Arts, are shown from a variety of perspectives, along with smaller structures representing many U.S. states.

Also shown are views of the nautical vessels displayed at the fair including the replica battleship USS Illinois, a replica of Columbus's Santa Maria, a replica Viking ship, and the fair's gondolas and similar smaller boats. Photographs of the Wooded Island and the Midway Plaisance also appear in the album. Of particular note are the pictures of ethnographic displays including Native American shelters and a group of "Dahomey Villagers." A series of photos taken on "Chicago Day," October 9, 1893, shows the crowds that set the world record for outdoor event attendance.

The collection includes MASA Committee Materials and Correspondence, 1954, 1995, undated, and MASA general Correspondence, 1961, 1975, undated. Robert Hall’s Personal and Professional Correspondence, 1953, 1972, undated; Speeches, 1960, 1971, undated; and Biographical Information, 1971, 1995, undated, complete the collection.

McBride, barkeeper and proprietor of the Bergin House hotel in Mount Vernon, Ohio, on June 15, 1877. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity (i.e. he was intoxicated when committing the murder), but the jury convicted him and he was sentenced to death. These papers appear to have been compiled by Bergin's defense counsel during the process of seeking a retrial in August 1877.

The collection includes two briefs; witnesses' statements about the language used in the confrontation, a 14-page document with statutes on first degree murder and evidence in the Bergin case; a 9-page argument; a list of points made by the plaintiff; and an organized list of precedent cases for drunkenness, homicidal impulse, homicidal mania, insanity with apparent sanity, hereditary insanity, sane today--insane tomorrow, murder in the 2nd degree, and the number of the insane in Ohio.

The collection's 18 affidavits appear to be manuscript forms for Bergin's defense to use in arguing for a retrial. They include several different handwritten forms produced by a clerk. With only three exceptions, the affidavits do not identify a particular individual, leaving blanks for their name and for the date of the sworn statement. Despite their incomplete state, some of these were still signed and stamped by a notary. The incomplete forms include duplicate text focused on different arguments for a retrial. For example, six of the affidavits discredit Sarah Rose as a witness; several of them are sworn statements by jurors that they had already formed their opinions of the case before the trial; and others claim the jurors were allowed to separate into their own boarding houses or mingle with crowds of people without police supervision.

This volume is a manuscript copy of Stephen E. Glover's play The Cradle of Liberty, adapted from James Fenimore Cooper's novel Lionel Lincoln. Set in Boston in 1775, just before and during the Battle of Bunker Hill, the play explores the relationship between a young British nobleman and his father, a North American patriot who has kept his identity a secret from his son.

This volume is a manuscript copy of Stephen E. Glover's play The Cradle of Liberty! A National Drama in Four Acts, adapted from James Fenimore Cooper's novel Lionel Lincoln and set in Boston in 1775. Glover presented this copy (106 pages) to "Mr. Annis," an acquaintance, in 1840. The first page shows a list of the main characters and the names of actors who played them in New York City, Boston, and New Orleans around 1837. The second page is a list of "Dramatis Personae," providing the names and brief descriptions of the main characters; most of them are affiliated with the British Army or with the American patriot cause.

The play takes place in Boston at the beginning of the American Revolution and concerns the relationship between Lionel Lincoln, a young British nobleman, and his companion, a patriot named Ralph (who is later revealed to be Lincoln's father). Though much of the play focuses on the relationship between Lincoln and Ralph, several scenes highlight the British Army or the patriots. Characters refer to the state of affairs around Boston in 1775 and discuss conflicts that give rise to physical violence in the play's final scenes, which take place at the Battle of Bunker Hill.

The Stephen L Barstow collection consists of various architectural records dating between 1953 and 1988, mostly undated, drawn or collected by Barstow.

There may be drafts and copies, as well as some original blueprints for each building, but the collection does not include an entire set of complete blueprints for any building. Drawings include proposed developments, sketches, site plans, mechanical and other details, floor plans, survey maps, site profiles and plans, preliminary views, alternate plans, design development plans, elevations, master development plans, foundation plans, among others. There are various types of pencil notations on blueline and trace paper drawings. Items within each folder are numbered in pencil in the lower right corner to assist patrons in retrieving specific items.

The collection includes architectural drawings of various houses and churches of Midland, Michigan, including the Church of the Nazarene, and other nearby buildings including West Midland Community Center, Northwood Institute, Crown Petroleum, Inc. gas station on US-23, the Midland County Santa Claus Workshop [house], West Midland County Parks Site Plan, Midland Hospital’s chronic care room. Blueprints for Interlochen Music Camp, Kent Intermediate Schools, Bay Refining Company Station, Central Pumping Station, DePauw University Performing Arts Center, Kalamazoo Nature Center, the Leonard Refineries, Inc. service station and sign, Stadium Boulevard Site Plan, Theater for Wayne State University, Young Subdivision curb grades, Roscommon Congregational Church, Temple Beth-El in Spring Valley, New York, lamps and decks are also included.

Note: Some records are brittle due to high acidity and there is also an issue of fading.
