This collection consists of letters, postcards, and photographs related to Private Arthur E. Welch of the United States Army, who served with the 1st Regiment, Company L, in and around Nogales, Arizona, between July and October 1916. Welch discussed everyday life along the United States-Mexico border, his work in a military ice house, and developments in the region's military conflicts.

This collection consists of 100 letters, 2 postcards, and several photographs related to Private Arthur E. Welch of the United States Army, who served with the 1st Regiment, Company L, in and around Nogales, Arizona, between July and October 1916. Welch wrote his first 2 letters to his mother, Mrs. M. J. Welch of Willimantic, Connecticut, while in training at Niantic, Connecticut, about his life in camp. His next 5 letters recount his journey to Nogales, Arizona, and describe the scenery in Ohio, Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas, and New Mexico.

The bulk of the collection consists of Welch's daily letters to his mother from July 4, 1916-October 2, 1916, about his experiences while stationed in Nogales, Arizona. He reported news of recent military developments, commented on his accommodations in camp, and discussed several aspects of his life in the army, including his training, his work in an ice house, and his attendance at Catholic religious services. He also described the area and discussed a lengthy march his unit made to Fort Huachuca, Arizona, where he remained for much of August. Welch occasionally mentioned relations with the Mexicans and their independence celebrations on September 16, as well as the actions of Pancho Villa. One of his friends, Ed Ryan, wrote a letter to Mrs. Welch about his experiences after being wounded in the arm; he also mentioned Arthur's work in the ice house (September 21, 1916). By early October 1916, Welch began to anticipate his return to the East Coast. Two photographic postcards depict Arthur E. Welch in uniform and in a pair of overalls.

The non-correspondence items are 1 photograph of a group of soldiers, as well as 3 scrapbook pages containing 31 photographs of Nogales, Arizona, and United States soldiers in uniform and at leisure.

The Arthur W. Haydon collection consists almost exclusively of diaries kept by Arthur from 1865 to 1878 and 1888 to 1915. The diaries are simply collections of Arthur's thoughts. The earliest entries are more fulsome than those for his later life.

Of particular interest are the two volumes, 1865-1866 and 1866-1878. The first of these was written while Arthur was away at school in Ann Arbor. He attended the University of Michigan for two years, 1865/66 and 1866/67. The entries show Arthur's love of school. Not only does he describe his days with great detail and emotion, but the style in which they are written reveals a young man who truly enjoys life. There are no diaries for the years 1879-1887. After 1878 there is a volume for each. The prose becomes much simpler. Haydon describes the weather for the day, the chores he performed, and the everyday events of his life, Only occasionally are the diary entries for these years revealing of Haydon's thoughts and emotions.

In addition to the diaries there is a folder containing miscellaneous newspaper clippings he saved about events important to him as well as a few family mementos. The photographs are of his house and farm buildings.

The collection contains tape recordings (7" and some 5" reels) of speeches by conservative and anti-communist lecturers. Most of the tapes are dated, and are arranged by year.

Newspaperman, editor of the Ann Arbor News. Correspondence, reports, photographs, and other materials largely concerning his newspaper career with Booth Newspapers, Inc.

The Artin Hovsepian photograph collection contains heavily colored portrait crayon enlargements and other portrait photographs created by Artin M. Garabed Hovsepian, an Armenian immigrant who worked as a photographer in Detroit, Michigan during the first half of the twentieth century.

The Artin Hovsepian Collection contains 78 photographic prints, predominantly portrait crayon enlargements. The majority of the subjects are young women, but portraits of men and children are also included. A number of images include props and outfits suggesting first communions, confirmations, and graduations. Other images suggest related religious themes, including a portrait series of a priest, and a group photograph of a religious school class, possibly at St. Albertus School in Detroit, Michigan. Also included in the collection are photographs of buildings from Hovsepian's Detroit neighborhood; animals; one portrait of an African American male; a man in a uniform; a costumed couple; and a group photograph of a 1925 meeting of the National Council of Women. Of special interest is an enlarged carte de visite of the "904-lb. Woman, Big Laura Wolford."

More than half of the collection is comprised of oval hand colored or tinted crayon enlargements colored with a variety of artistic media and techniques including crayon, pastels, airbrushing, and paint. Many of the images are on a convex molded cardboard or paper meant to create the illusion of three-dimensionality when framed in an oval domed "bubble" glass frame.

The Arts of Citizenship Program at the University of Michigan fostered the role of the arts and humanities through collaborative cultural partnerships and community projects in the Ann Arbor and Detroit area. The program aimed to enrich public life and to enlarge the university's educational mission. These records contains notes, correspondence, publicity, audiovisual materials, presentations, and other material documenting the administration, public programming, and community partnerships undertaken by the Arts of Citizenship program. The Arts of Citizenship (AOC) Program documentation consists of notes, correspondence, publicity, audiovisual materials (audiocassettes, digital materials, videotapes), and other material documenting the daily administrative activities, public programming, outreach, research, and community partnerships. The record group is divided into three series: Administration, Project Files, and Website. These series represent the original order of materials as received upon accession. The researcher should note that the records do not provide an in-depth portrayal of AOC, but rather information about the operation, functions, and details on specific projects undertaken by the program.

Detroit, Michigan, businessman, researcher and analyst of the automotive and related industry; papers include correspondence, topical files, and other material documenting his Wall Street career and his management of Arvid Jouppi Associates.

The Arvid Jouppi Papers (24 linear feet) are primarily comprised of materials which document his Wall Street career and his management of Arvid Jouppi Associates. There are only limited materials related to his professional life prior to his tenure at Hayden, Stone. The collection is particularly strong in documenting the everyday work, research findings, and economic philosophy of one of Wall Street's leading automobile industry analysts; the difficulties, at times, of developing and running an independent research services firm (AJA); and the economic vicissitudes of the fields, particularly the automotive field, in which Jouppi was interested and conducted research.

The Jouppi Papers came to the Bentley Historical Library with only minimal arrangement. The papers had been transferred between Jouppi's offices and home several times and much of the original order of the materials was lost in the process. What remained were materials roughly arranged by chronological stage of Jouppi's professional career. That order has been retained. The papers consist of seven series: Personal; Chronological; Early Career; Hayden, Stone; William C. Roney and Company; Delafield Childs, Inc.; Arvid Jouppi Associates; and Writings. For each series in which there is a correspondence subseries, the correspondence is both incoming and outgoing unless otherwise noted on the contents list, and chronological files of correspondence are arranged by month and year. For each series in which there is a topical subseries, the files are arranged alphabetically.
