Volume I, "Lord Nelson and the Battle of Copenhagen" (35 items, April 4, 1801-July 30, 1801), contains 20 letters between Nelson and Hans Lindholm concerning the battle and diplomatic relations between Great Britain, Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Russia, including efforts to secure peace between Great Britain and Denmark. Letters to Nelson from other writers about the Royal Navy and Nelson's military career are also present.

Volume II, "Letters of Horatio Lord Nelson to Captain S. Sutton, R. N. with Memorabilia of the Battle of Trafalgar" (30 items, October 28, 1773; October 22, 1801-September 25, 1805), contains Nelson's letters to Sutton (18 items), as well as additional correspondence and documents related to the Battle of Trafalgar and Nelson's death. In his letters to Sutton, Nelson discussed various naval issues, such as ship movements, the possibility of treaty between Great Britain and France in 1801, and tensions with France in 1805. Other items include engravings of Nelson, "Bacchante," and Nelson's column; Cuthbert Collingwood's orders for Nelson to sail to Cadiz and spy on the enemy fleet (August 24, 1805); Samuel Sutton's admission ticket for Nelson's funeral; and illustrated manuscripts about Royal Navy night signals, its order of battle, and Nelson's final flag-based signal to the fleet ("England expects every man will do his D U T Y").

A chronological series of manuscripts (52 items, 1781-1805) covers Horatio Nelson’s naval career in the West Indies, Mediterranean, and Baltic. A 46-page manuscript describes Horatio Nelson’s attempts in the British West Indies to curtail illegal trade with the United States of America from June 1784 through July 1786. Several letters relate to Nelson’s diplomatic and naval efforts in Italy in the late 1790s. Others detail Nelson’s involvement in and opinion of European political and military affairs, including relations with France, Spain, Italy, Portugal, Egypt, Turkey, Algeria, Sweden, Denmark, and Russia. The collection also includes series of correspondence with William Hamilton, Robert Barlow, and John Hookham Frere. The Horatio Noyes collection is made up of letters and essays pertaining to Louisiana sugar plantations, life on the Wyoming frontier, travels through the South, the history of astronomy, and other subjects.

The Horatio Noyes collection is made up of 5 letters (28 pages) and 2 essays (70 pages). Noyes wrote a detailed letter to his son Charles in December 1871 about his travels in rural Louisiana, including his impressions of riverboat steamers and sugar plantations. A later draft (unsigned) describes the author's travels in Virginia and North Carolina, with a detailed description of Richmond and observations about Southern culture. Two unsigned letters from late 1879 and early 1880 describe a soldier's life on the Wyoming frontier, with Horatio Noyes's requests for the letters to be proofed and returned to him. Two lengthy essays concern the history of astronomy and contemporary astronomical knowledge, particularly about the Solar System. See the Detailed Box and Folder Listing for more information.

The Horn Family Papers, 1914-2022, and updated, contains biographical materials, photographs, letters, postcards, travel papers, scrapbooks, photograph albums, and a leather wallet. There are nine boxes of varying size, totaling three cubic feet. The papers are organized by size and alphabetically. Materials are in English and German. The majority of the collection consists of photographs of four generations of the Horn family. There are photographs of Wilhelm Horn in the German army in WWI and in the Stobs POW Camp in Scotland. Many folders contain Wilhelm and Anna’s immigration and citizenship documents for the United States and letters from the Horn Family in Germany sent to family members in Michigan. Wilhelm’s war service booklet, Wilhem and Anna’s German passports, and postcards are in German. Three folders contain educational materials from Frances Horn while she was in school. “My Wedding” by Frances Horn is a portfolio she made while in school of her ideal wedding. Wilhelm Horn’s military record is in German. Box 6 contains 2022 paper copies of digital documents that were originally contained on a CD. Box 4 is the only legal-size (.25 cubic foot) box with birth certificates, estate papers, immigration papers, and a membership paper for the Order of the Eastern Star. Five oversized photograph albums and scrapbooks complete the collection. The scrapbooks, mostly 1940s-1950s, were created by Elsie and Frances Horn. Besides photographs, these include programs from Saginaw concerts, Arthur Hill High School (Saginaw), the Saginaw Bears (a minor league baseball team), Detroit Lions and Tigers games, Central Normal School Homecoming, Saginaw sporting events, including track meets in which Fran competed, and Job’s Daughters (of which Fran was a member) photographs and programs, souvenirs from programs and dances, and newspaper clippings.

Processing Note: During processing 1.5 cubic feet of materials were withdrawn and returned to the owner as per the donor agreement, including duplicates, miscellaneous letters, blanks, reading materials, out-of-scope material, and miscellaneous publications. Five publications titles were separately cataloged, including four books and a newspaper.

The collection consists of correspondence and financial documents between Rodman Palmer, surveyor and land agent, and Hosea Allen concerning land in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, granted to Ann Meech Williams (1776-1857), Hosea Allen's mother-in-law, as a land bounty which was part of her widow's pension granted on the basis of husband David William's (1748-1835) Revolutionary War military service. Allen was Williams' executor who handled both of her military pension claims--the other was based on the service of her first husband, Timothy Meech (1741-1825).

The first two documents (an 1857 receipt for the land in Hosea Allen's name and a record of an 1860 sale of land and costs associated) are addressed to Spencer Allen (1824-1862), Hosea Allen's brother, in Chicago, Illinois. Other documents discuss taxes owed and payments made.

Correspondence, informational flyers, conference records, and ephemera relating to the activities of the Household Workers' Rights Project, a grassroots group organized in 1979 in San Francisco to promote the rights of domestic workers.

The bulk of the collection is correspondence. Maupin and other organizers of HWR corresponded with domestic workers, lawyers, politicians, and related activist organizations to provide domestic workers with legal assistance, training, job referrals, and other vital resources. Of note are the organizers' two-year correspondence with the office of California assemblyman Art Agnos, as well as their correspondence with Carolyn Reed and other lead organizers of the NCHE. Agnos promised to help the organization further improve Wage Order No. 15, while the NCHE provided financial and other assistance to the HWR project as it got off the ground. Maupin co-led a workshop at an NCHE conference in Memphis, Tennessee in 1980.

Also included are various forms and surveys, often in English and Spanish, distributed to domestic workers to help them find jobs and provide feedback about their experiences.

The University of Michigan Housing Public Affairs office disseminated information and served as a spokesman for issues related to student housing. The files were collected or created by Alan Levy who was the director of Housing Public Affairs starting in the 1990s. Levy also held previous positions within the Housing Division. Included are topical files on campus issues and student life policies as well as national and international events impacting the campus community.

These files from Housing Public Affairs, were collected and created by Alan Levy in his roles with the Housing Division, primarily as housing spokesman. Documentation includes files on topics such as alcohol use, capital improvements, crime and safety, diversity in housing, and student deaths. Additionally, the university's response to external events, such as the outbreaks of SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome), the September 11 Terrorist Attacks, the Virginia Tech Massacre, and Y2K are also documented. Files on rate changes in university housing during the 1970s, and information of the university's purchase and sale of the Nu Sigma Nu medical fraternity house are also found in these records. The files are arranged into four series: Topical Files, University Housing Rate Changes, Nu Sigma Nu, and Audio-Visual Materials.
