Professor of mathematics and later of law at the University of Michigan., papers include addresses and essays, family genealogies, class notebooks, and a draft manuscript and source materials for a history of the U-M Law School.

The Edwin Charles Goddard papers consist of addresses and essays on various subjects by Goddard and his wife Lillian; miscellaneous letters; notes and letters on European trip, 1908-1909; family genealogy; outline of an algebra course; University of Michigan law thesis; original manuscript and manuscript material for his history of University of Michigan Law School; Ann Arbor High School and University of Michigan student notebooks on courses by Henry C. Adams, James B. Angell, Isaac N. Demmon, John Dewey, Henry S. Frieze, Charles M. Gayley, Richard Hudson, Elisha Jones, Andrew C. McLaughlin, George S. Morris, Albert B. Prescott, Jacob E. Reighard, Volney M. Spalding, and Victor C. Vaughan. Also included are portraits of Goddard and of his mother, Mary Blodgett Goddard, and her family.

Posters and broadsides concerning competition between freshman and sophomore classes at the University of Michigan

The collections consists of 37 poster (21 freshman class and 16 sophomore class) ranging in date from the sophomore class of 1886 to the sophomore class of 1944. The posters are listed by class year--the year a freshman class would graduate. Thus the class of 1910 poster marks the Black Friday event of the Fall of 1906.

Files on individual University of Michigan varsity athletes, coaches and staff compiled by the Media Relations staff and its predecessors. Files may include biographical information, statistics, clippings and photographs. Files for an individual may range from a single item to several folders. Not all U-M athletes are represented in the records.

The Athletic Department Individual Files consist of three series: Coaches and Staff, Athletes -- Men, and Athletes -- Women. The files in each series contain background information, news articles, and photographs of individual University of Michigan Varsity athletes, coaches, and staff members from the University's athletic department. It should be noted that some files do not contain photographs. Also, some files contain compact discs (CD's) containing digital images. The bulk of the files date from around 1960 to 2002, but included are files from as early as the mid to late 19th century, to as recent as 2005. The files do not include members of the club sports teams. The number and extent of files varies by sport and over time, in part reflects varying degrees of effort by the Media Relations staff. Sometimes referred to by Media Relations staff as the "star files", the Individual Files are most extensive for football and basketball, but all varsity sports are represented. Beginning in the 1970 coverage all sports becomes more extensive. After 1982 when women's sports began competing in the Big Ten and management of publicity efforts became more fully integrated in the Media Relations office, the coverage of women's sports becomes more extensive.

The files in each series are arranged alphabetically. (Files have ben received at various times ad are physically arranged in several alphabetical run, but are listed in a single alphabetical run for coaches/administrators, men, and women athletes.) Each of the athlete entries is followed by a code for the sport(s) in which they participated.

Correspondence, photographs, directories, lists of members and other material concerning reunions of the University of Michigan class of 1899; and an article on student loan funds at the University of Michigan, 1927-1928. Correspondents include James B. Angell (July 17, 1909) and William A. Comstock. Visual materials include images of Bursley, and a childhood photograph of Bursley's wife, Marguerite Knowlton Bursley.

This collection documents the personal and business activities of Jospeh A. Bursley. Materials include correspondence--notably, with the University of Michigan president James B. Angell and Michigan Governor William A. Comstock,-- directories, information regarding reunions of the class of 1899, an article on student loan funds at the University of Michigan, and a selection of photographs which include a childhood photograph of Marrguerite Knowlton Bursley. The material spans from the 1880s to 1950.

Roy Stanley Swinton (1886-1956) was a University of Michigan alumnus and professor of engineering mechanics. Consists of photographs of Calumet, Michigan; the Calumet and Hecla Mining Company and hoisting equipment at the mine; and a stamp mill in Lake Linden, Michigan. Also included are portraits.

Naturalist and historian at the Nankin Mills Nature Center near Westland, Michigan. Nankin Mills was also used by Henry Ford in the manufacture of automobile parts. Nankin Mills files including notebook with research notes and jottings about the Nankin Mills area, newspaper clippings, and deeds; collected historical material including child's diary, 1902-1903, and Pontiac, Michigan family papers containing essay about women's suffrage, 1881; photographs of the Nankin Mills and related areas in western Wayne County, Michigan; copy prints of Pike's Peak, Colorado, 1887.

The Mary Ellsworth papers consist of two types of materials: 1) papers which relate specifically to Nankin Mills and to her work as naturalist, and 2) historical materials collected or received by Mary Ellsworth.

Alumni Association (University of Michigan),Individual Photographs forms part of the larger University of Michigan Alumni Association record group. As a convenience, it is described here in greater detail than in the finding aid for the full record group. The Individual Photographs includes portraits and activity photos of celebrities and other figures associated in some way with the University, including students (especially athletes), alumni, faculty, staff, and prominent visitors (especially honorary degree recipients).

The collection consists of pamphlets, brochures, articles and other printed material on the history, philosophy and dietary practices, and treatments of the Battle Creek Sanitarium.

William Wilson Cook (1858-1930) was a University of Michigan alumnus and New York attorney, author, and philanthropist whose financial contributions to the University of Michigan funded the construction of the Martha Cook Building and Law Quadrangle. Consists of a portrait engraving of Cook and photographs of Cook's sculpture on display in the Martha Cook Building.

The collection consists of copyprints (with some negatives) of historical images collected by members of the Michigan Photographers Society. The photographs are arranged alphabetically by name of city where the collector lived. This is followed by descriptions of the images. The strength of the collection is for its visual documentation of various Michigan cities, including street scenes, businesses, private residences, views of ships, railroads, lumbering activities, and local customs.
