The collection is comprised of annual reports, brochures and pamphlets, programs, proposals, and reports from the Department of Internal Medicine. This includes publications from subunits and related clinics such as the Frankel Cardiovascular Center, the Committee on Medical Ethics, the Division of Molecular and Human Genetics, the Division of General Medicine, and the Medical Center.

The Department of Internal Medicine Publications contains two series, Unit Publications and Sub-Unit Publications. The Unit Publications series contains printed material published specifically by the Department of Internal Medicine. These publications are defined as being widely distributed and may be published at regular intervals. They are arranged by genre of the publication. The Sub-Unit Publications series contains publications from subordinate offices, departments, programs and organizations within the Department of Internal Medicine. These publications are arranged alphabetically by the creating sub-unit.

Unit of the University of Michigan Medical School. Records include minutes of meetings of senior staff members; also other materials concerning intern and residency training, and scattered correspondence and lecture notes; includes chairperson's files of John M. Carethers, John Del Valle, H. David Humes, William N. Kelley, Marc Lippman, Lawrence McMahon, and Tadataka Yamada. Also included are divisional files, administrative records, and photographs (including negatives and proofs) of faculty and staff.

The records of the department have arrived in five separate accessions in 1986, 1992, 1998, 2014, and 2018.

The 1992 accession of the records of the Department of Internal Medicine are primarily from the years when William Kelley served as chair (1975-1989). The accession is divided into five series: Division Files, Topical Files, Meeting Minutes, Chairperson's Files, and Pollard Medical Research Institute.

The 1998 accession contains the files of Chris Durovich, the Chief Administrator of the Department of Internal Medicine and covers the period from 1990 to 1996. As one would expect given this origin, these materials are focused more on the administration of the department than on its medical mission. The many topical files relating to managed care and organizational restructuring (such as the Cost Effectiveness Program (CEP), Redesign Coordinating Group, and Structure Work Group) reveal the many pressures on the department during this period. Durovich was also active in many inter and intradepartmental committees and workgroups, including the Clinical Departmental Administrators and meetings. This accession is divided into two series: Topical Files and Financial Files.

The 2014 accession is divided into five series: Division Files, Chairperson's Files, Financial Files, Topical Files, and Photographs. Material includes correspondence of former key figures, including department chairs Drs. William N. Kelley (1975-1989), Tadataka Yamada (1990-1996), H. David Humes (1996-2000), and John M. Carethers (2009-present), Medical School Dean Giles G. Bole Jr. (1990-1996), and George D. Zuidema (professor of surgery and Vice Provost Emeritus for Medical Affairs/1984-1994). Other materials highlight the department's efforts to attract and honor outstanding faculty and staff, monitor on-going operations, identify issues, gather and evaluate information, and recommend courses of action. These materials also shed light on the department's need to allocate additional work spaces, develop specific programs for education, training, research, and practice, and manage finances. These facets are all evident as researchers will discover files pertaining to faculty awards, committees, space planning proposals, events, program descriptions, financial data, and images of faculty and staff. The 2018 accession contains materials related to the department's Medical Ethics Committee dated in the 1990s. Included are questionnaires completed by staff physicians with narratives about situations relevant to professional ethics in their daily work.

Research papers, 1967-1979, of students in journalism at the University of Michigan; contain essays relating to the history of Michigan newspapers and journalists, and the development of radio and television broadcasting; include papers concerning newspapers in Adrian, Ann Arbor, Detroit, and Grand Rapids, and the journalistic efforts of Father Charles Coughlin, Henry Ford, and Gerald L. K. Smith.

The Department of Journalism research papers collection measures 2 linear feet and consists solely of student research papers written between 1967 and 1979. The papers contain essays written regarding the history of various newspapers -- many in Michigan cities such as Adrian, Ann Arbor, Detroit and Grand Rapids; journalists and the journalistic efforts of individuals such as Father Charles Coughlin, Henry Ford, and Gerald L.K. Smith; and the development of radio and television broadcasting.

The surviving administrative records of the Department of Journalism were retained by its successor unit, the Department of Communication, and can be found in that department's records.

Department in the University of Michigan College of Engineering, includes brochures and pamphlets, bulletins describing the graduate programs, and bibliographies of faculty members.

The Department of Materials Science Engineering Publications (0.2 linear foot) are divided into two series: Unit Publications, Sub-Unit Publications, Topical Publications and Student Publications. The bulk of the publications document Department of Materials Science Engineering.

The Unit Publications series contains printed material published specifically by the Department of Materials Science Engineering. These publications are defined as being widely distributed and may be published at regular intervals. They are arranged by genre of the publication.

The Unit Publications series includes brochures, bulletins, manuals, and reports. The bulletins describe graduate study at the university from 1956 to 1994. The bulletin describing the research done in the MSE department includes a short, select bibliography for each member of the department in 1974. The graduate students manuals written for the 1990-1991 academic year includes a directory of personnel in the department, a description of the research facilities, and degree requirements. The 1954 report A Year in Industry by Professor C.M. Sliepcevich, describes his impressions of the year he worked with the Monsanto Chemical Company.

The Sub-Unit Publications series contains publications from subordinate offices, departments, programs and organizations within the Department of Materials Science Engineering. These publications are arranged alphabetically by the creating sub-unit. These publications include a list of faculty and their work with professional organizations and various industrial companies.

Records include administrative files, committee minutes, reminiscences of faculty members Wilfred Kaplan and Raymond Wilder, material relating to various undergraduate mathematics clubs, and photographs of faculty.

The records of the Department of Mathematics document the history and administration of mathematics education at the University of Michigan. The records consist of three series: Administrative, Minutes, and Photographs, including budget material, correspondence, lists of faculty members, reminiscences of several faculty members and files relating to student organizations.

Teaching and research unit of the College of Engineering of the University of Michigan. Contains publications produced by or for the department, including annual reports, bibliographies, brochures and pamphlets, bulletins describing graduate programs, directories, histories, manuals, and newsletters.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering Publications are divided into three series: Unit Publications, Sub-Unit Publications, and Student Publications. The bulk of the publications document the teaching and research functions of the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mechanics.

The University of Michigan Department of Mechanical Engineering dates from 1868, and it existed under various designations resulting from shifts and mergers in engineering, including at one time industrial engineering and applied mechanics. Records include minutes of faculty meetings, 1922-1941, and 1984-2007; advisory committee minutes, 1997-2007; and material on the 125th anniversary in 1993. Extensive visual materials document departmental activities and research including color and black and white photographs, contact sheets, slides, and negatives. The departmental website, as of June 2001, also forms a part of this record group.

The Department of Mechanical Engineering record group is comprised of manuscript and visual materials transferred between 1995 and 2001. The materials are arranged in eight series Minutes, E-Mail to Faculty, Office Files, Contact Sheets, Photographs, Panoramic Prints and Slides, Negatives, and Website. The manuscript material covers the periods 1922 to 1941 and 1993 to 2007 while the visual materials are mainly from the time period 1985-2000. The earlier accessions include a series of faculty minutes covering the period from 1922 to 1941 and 1993 to 1999. The earlier accessions also include a small group of electronic mail correspondence (printout) that was sent from the central departmental office to the departmental faculty from 1993 to 1996. Subsequent accessions include a small selection of office files alphabetically arranged and additional faculty minutes.

Visual materials, documenting departmental activities ca. 1985-2000, form the bulk of the record group. The departmental website, as of June 2001, also forms a part of this record group. The visual materials in the record group include color and black and white photographs, contact sheets, slides, and negatives. The visual materials are either arranged by a numerical sequence or alphabetically by topic or last name. Materials in the numerical sequence filing system include 4 x 6 prints, contact sheets, and negatives. While the materials in the numerical sequence are categorized by format, the materials in this sequence were designed to form one system. That is the 4 x 6 prints, contact sheets, and negatives reference each other.

Collected historical information, including record of faculty research, 1890-1970, history of the department, and faculty bibliography; and correspondence and memoranda of chairmen, Walter J. Nungester and Frederick C. Neidhardt; also administrative files concerning faculty activities, fellowships, research projects, and student affairs.

The bulk of the papers are from 1959-1970, years during which Dr. Nungester was chairman of the department. The papers have been arranged into three series; materials relating to the history and development of the department, correspondence and memoranda, and administrative files.

Materials relating to the development of the department include a history written by Dr. Novy, a biographical sketch of Dr. Novy, and summaries of data relating to faculty, students, course offerings, seminars, research and publications.

Correspondence and memoranda cover the years 1959-1971. Dr. Nungester's correspondence relates to the administration of the department and research in microbiology. Dr. Neidhardt's correspondence deals mainly with the transition period between his appointment as chairman and the actual beginning date of his tenure.

In the administrative files, the researcher will find copies of the alumni newsletter, annual reports, completed questionnaires, and financial records. There are also materials relating to faculty, students, research, outside speakers, and distinguished visitors to the department.

The Department of Molecular and Integrative Physiology Publications contains one series, Unit Publications. The series includes two brochures of the Department's graduate studies program, a history of the Department written on the ocassion of the centennial in 1982, three manuals of the Physiology Laboratory dating from 1926 to 1952, and a report, The Physiological Basis of Health , written by John W. Bean in 1939.

Files of Professors John W. Bean, Robert Gesell, Warren P. Lombard, and Henry Sewall, 1925-1979; miscellaneous departmental papers relating to the Hyperbaric Chamber Committee, the Institute for Human Adjustment, the Lombard Library, research funds, and teaching assignments; and publications of physiological laboratory; and collection of physiology textbooks, manuals, and monographs, mainly written by University of Michigan faculty; also photographs and films.
