The collection includes the following series, biographical information, photographs, correspondence, meeting minutes, reports, speeches, subject files, and other materials documenting William B. Boyd's tenure as Central Michigan University's president, 1968-1978.

The collection includes: Biographical Information, 1968-1974 (5 folders); Correspondence, 1968-1978 (about 1 cubic ft.); Meeting Minutes from CMU entities and Education-related institutions and organizations, 1968-1978 (about 1 cubic ft.); a few Photographs, 1969-1971, undated (more are in the Commencement folders and other Subject Files); Reports from CMU entities and educational related institutions and organizations, 1968-1978 (about 1 cubic ft.); Speeches, 1968-1975 (9 folders); and Subject Files on a wide variety of topics relations to education, CMU, and numerous CMU departments and social issues and organizations, 1968-1978, undated (7.75 cubic ft.), including Congratulatory letters to Boyd on his inauguration as CMU’s seventh president (2 folders).

The heart of the collection is in the Subject Files, which documents the change of focus for CMU during Pres. Boyd’s tenure. The topics of Affirmative Action, African American- Curriculum, History Week, and Professorship, and Afro-American Cultural Center; Black Symposium, Black White Convocation, United Black Student Association, Diversity Gay Rights, and Handicapped students all debut during his administration. Other topics of interest include the Lettuce Boycott, May 1972 problems (an incident with the Governor’s car on campus), Native American Affairs, Nigerian Project, Students for a Democratic Society, the Thailand Project (part of the Inter-Institutional Affiliation Project), Korean Orphanage, and the Vietnam Moratorium (which includes a photograph of the protest on campus). There are many topics that with ‘Student” covering the Code of Conduct, various committees, teaching, senate resolutions, unrest, etc. Case files of some students who were “problems” also are included, such as the Anthony Syroccki Case.

Other topics of interest include the Dedication folders for new buildings including the High Rise (later called “the Towers”), McNeel Nature Center, Perry Shorts Stadium, Ryan Hall, and the Tribal Community Center.

There are also many folders related to the faculty and their evaluation or assessment, funding, appropriations, and CMU Development endeavors and the budget.

In the Box and Folder Listing the following abbreviations are used: MI for Michigan, Dept. for Department, and Co. for Company. On folders where abbreviations for names were used, the full name, if known, is given in parenthesis at the end of the folder title.

The collection includes a ledger, meeting minutes, reference materials, reports on sorority officers, members, events, and grade points, biographical material and photographs of Dr. Sharp, and information on Delta Sigma Phi fraternity.

The Organizational Records, 1929-1963, include a Ledger, 1942-1961, and Meeting Minutes, 1941-1961 (.5 cubic ft. in 1 box); Miscellaneous reference materials, 1933-1963 (approximately .5 cubic ft. in 1 box); Sorority Files, which are reports on each sorority listing officers, members, and their annual events, as well as some supporting documentation, (1 cubic ft. in 2 boxes); and Sorority Grade Point Materials, which show the grade points of each sorority sister and the average of each sorority, 1961-1964 (approximately .5 cubic ft. in 1 box). Also included is one folder each on the fraternity Delta Sigma Phi, 1948-1956, and Dr. D. Louise Sharp.

Central Michigan University. Park Library Architectural Materials Collection, 1966, 2001

The collection documents the reconstruction and new addition of the CMU Park Library building and temporary redesign of Finch Fieldhouse. There is also one set of blue-line drawings of the old Park building.

This collection, 1966,2001 [bulk 1997-2001], documents the reconstruction of the old Park Library building, and the temporary redesign of Finch Fieldhouse, and the planning and construction of the new addition of the new addition. The collection includes concept and presentation drawings in the following formats: blue-line drawings, drawings on FoamCor Board, artists Renderings, and Vendor Sample Board. These materials were created and used during the design phase and came to the archivist once they were no longer needed by the architects or for promotional reasons. The archivist decided to incorporate the only blue-lines of the old building in the Clarke into the collection for continuity. Also included is a three-dimensional model with wooden base and clear plastic cover, undated [1999-2000]199. The model measures 28x35x8 inches and includes the building, people, cars, trees, sidewalks, and Preston Street. The model is made of cardboard and plastic in red, white, blue, green, brown, and black.

Researchers may also be interested in additional architectural materials documenting the addition which are found in the CMU. Park Library New library collection, 1996-2008, which is also housed in the Clarke Historical Library. This collection includes final drawings, which came to the archivist after re/construction was completed. The collection also documents the open house events and other events held in the new building. Collections documenting the history and functions of the library are also housed in the Clarke.

Organizational records, 1984-2016, include: DAC (Dean’s Advisory Council) and SFC (See, feel, care) Meeting Minutes, agendas, and attachments; Five-Year Plans, Annual and other Reports; Bylaws Revisions by the Faculty and by the Dean; Long-term plans; Goals; Libraries Review and Evaluation; Dean’s Evaluation, June 29, 2011; Dean’s Retirement information, June 2016; Publicity, Art, 2006-2009; Library Master Plan, 2015; and a LibQual Survey, 2011. These materials came from Dean of Libraries, Tom Moore’s office, after he retired in 2016. All boxes are .5 cubic foot boxes except #1, #3 and #7, which are .25 cubic foot boxes. The LibQual Survey was very important and highly positive about the services the library and library staff provided to the university community and surrounding communities.

The collection is ongoing. It is organized by series, alphabetically by topic, and in original order, which is reverse chronological.

Scrapbooks, constitutions, bylaws, programs, photographs, booklets and a few meeting minutes of the Central Michigan University. Residence Halls Assembly.

The collection documents some of the history of the CMU. RHA in constitutions, bylaws, programs, photographs, scrapbooks, booklets, webpages [added by the Archivist], and a few meeting minutes. The majority of the collection consists of the scrapbooks, all eighteen of which are oversized volumes of varying completion. Some of the covers and scrapbooks are particularly beautiful, creative, and well identified, including 1995-1996 (Cover of cotton flannel with cars design); 1996-1997 (Cover of bright tie-dyed material with PEACE); 1999-2000 (Cover words in pink, green, and silver sparkle paint on black scrapbook cover); 2006 (Cover of red satin cover with black RHA, 2006, and trim); and 2006-2007 (Cover of beautiful tie-dyed material with white rope and purple ribbon trim, RHA).

There are a number of organizations represented in the collection to which CMU. RHA belongs to and interacts with, including:

GLAUCURH [Great Lakes Association of College and University Residence Halls] is a student-run organization which works to promote and improve student life at college and university campus in the region including Michigan, Ontario, Wisconsin, Illinois and Indiana. It focuses on providing quality programming and activities for on-campus residents to improve their college experience. It was founded in 1968. The organization works with the NCCs [National Communications Coordinator]s who each represent their school. There are conferences, regional and national awards and regional directors and national officers of the organization;

MORHA [Michigan Organization of Residence Hall Association] which is the related state organization;

and, NACURH [National Association of College and University Residence Halls] which is the related national organization, which has a program of the month competition in which CMU routinely competes.

Miscellaneous School of Music material including programs.

The collection consists of miscellaneous materials from various sources documenting the history of Central Michigan University (CMU)’s Department of and, later, School of Music. Materials in the collection include: correspondence, events, workshop materials, organizational history information, and publications including posters, bulletins, newsletters, un/bound music programs, 1904-2003 (Boxes 1-2); a bound program for 1975 is missing. The first two boxes of the collection were part of the Clarke Historical Library's Central Michigan University (CMU) Vertical File and, as such, the collection is incomplete. A 2017 addition consists entirely of CMU School of Music bound programs, 1979/80-2016/17 (Boxes 3-15). There are no bound programs extant in the collection nor in the School of Music (as of 2017) for the following years: 1992/93, 1994/95, 2003/04, 2004/05, and 2011/12. Materials are in alphabetical and chronological order.

This collection of Central Michigan University School of Music (SOM) recordings documents diverse musical performances and events performed in the School of Music by its faculty and students, and alumni, as well as guest musicians and artists, 1962-2018.

This collection of Central Michigan University School of Music (SOM) recordings documents diverse musical performances and events performed in the School of Music by its faculty and students, and alumni, as well as guest musicians and artists, 1962-2018. The recordings include choral, woodwind, brass, string, keyboard, and percussion soloists and ensembles, the CMU Marching Chippewas (band), recitals, annual and holiday concerts, galas, student and faculty recitals, master classes, workshops, high school choir and honors band concerts and camps, and annual scholarship competitions including: Patricia Nixon Woodwind, Paul I. Wilworth Brass, Irwin Piano, and the Cedric Colness and Dees Vocal. Boxes 1-33 consists mainly of reel-to-reel tapes and cassettes with a few CDs, 1962-1998. Boxes 33-69 includes cassettes, CDs, and some DVDs. Programs are included with nearly every recording. Paper programs are in the original reel-to-reel box, wrapped around the cassettes, and printed on CD and DVD cases. The most unique musical source in the collection is a laptop, see CD, MicroCHIP Music, November 12, 2010, while the most unusual group name is that of the Suspicious Cheese Lords, see their CD, October 29, 2010 (both CDs are in Box 55). The collection is organized in chronological order.

There are some inconsistencies or inaccurate information in the collection. Obvious typos were checked and corrected. Sometimes label information on reel-to-reel boxes and interior labels did not match. Other times, the information indicated that newer musical events were recorded over older recording/s, sometimes several times. In these cases, we included all names, events, and dates in the Box and Folder listing since we lacked the resources to listen to all of these recordings. Overall the recordings and original housing are in good to excellent condition. For a number of years, someone wrote on cassettes labels using red ink pens and the data is now quite faded and difficult to read.

The first deposit, Boxes 1-33, was transferred in June 1997, when the SOM moved from Powers Hall to the then new Music Building. Archivist Marian Matyn and a student packed the boxes and moved them through a window into her car as the doors were blocked during renovations. The second deposit, Boxes 34-69, was packed by two students and Marian and pushed by carts into the Clarke in spring 2021 when the Music Resource Center, where the recordings had been stored and made accessible to researchers, was converted into a lounge area. The SOM switched from hard copy recordings to live streaming in early March 2020 when COVID-19 closed campus

Researchers may be interested in other SOM collections in the Clarke including those with photographs, programs, and historical information. The SOM is also represented in numerous other Clarke collections in CMU photographs, publications, homecoming and athletics materials, vertical files, as well as in separately cataloged audio recordings, videos, dissertations and thesis, and musical scores.

The Central Michigan University’s women Softball Videotapes, 1981-2015, and undated, consist of taped recordings documenting the team.

The Central Michigan University’s women Softball Videotapes, 1981-2015, and undated, consist of taped recordings documenting the team. The majority of the tapes cover games played by the team, but a few tapes feature practices/scrimmages, trips, holiday events, and award ceremonies. While most tapes provide specific dates, numerous feature just the year or the opponents. These partially unidentified tapes are organized at the end of the chronological ordering for each year. Some tapes are labeled specifically for tournaments, such as National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) Tournament, and these are kept together. The format of the tapes are VHS, VHS-C, HI-8, and MiniDVs, with MiniDVs being the majority of the collection.

Processing Note: During processing 17 miniDVs, 4 VHS-Cs, and 1 High-8 were withdrawn as they were unlabeled, and the format is inaccessible on current CMU equipment.

Central Michigan University. Student Activity Center Project collection, 1983-2003

The collection includes correspondence, 1982-2003, and undated, concerning the planning, financing and construction of the Student Activity Center (SAC) at Central Michigan University (CMU).

This collection consists mainly of correspondence dealing with the planning, financing, and construction of the SAC. Key people involved in the process and correspondences were Jerry Scoby (Director of Business Services and Assistant Vice President for Business Affairs), Kim Ellertson (Vice President of Business and Finance), and Tim Jones (Director of Campus Recreation).

Box 1 in this collection contains documents generally focusing on the immediate planning and building of the recreation center, 1983-1990.

Phase I of the SAC Project began in 1983 and focused on proposals for and the planning of the campus’s recreation building, and the renovation of several other buildings on campus, including: remodeling the President’s house, the physical plant building, and a library addition.

There are numerous correspondences between the University and the Nuveen Co., which was chosen to be the senior manager of the projects and the financial advisor. The letters discuss different funding avenues for the projects, including the use of student bonds.

In addition, there is documentation of several other capital projects that the university was planning and funding in conjunction with the SAC. One such project was the Biomass Wood Fuel Plant and Telephone Systems Project (aka Woodchip).

Phase II of the project began in 1987 and comprised the final approval of designs and schematics of the building, and topographical surveys of the land. Most of the letters are between Anthony Paparella, the University Architect, and TMP Associates, the firm chosen for design development.

Included are a sampling of Construction Invoices, 1986-2000, that show areas of main concern in the building, as well as issues that arose during construction and additions and subtractions that were made due to budgetary limitations. There are documents discussing if a student membership fee should exist and how it should be implemented, tuition-based or as an outside fee. Also included are financial records documenting the University’s attempt to raise $25 million for the multiple projects, Bond Revenue Statistics, 1987-1989.

Box 2 contains documents pertaining to after the recreation center was opened, 1990-2003, as well as other properties that the University owned.

Letters discussing food services that should be offered in the new building are part of the collection, including the mission statement of FAST BREAK, a healthy food store. The internal audit of 1992 listed the weak points of the SAC, such as the definition of outside users and funding for equipment replacement, and offered recommended solutions.

In the ‘Budget and Finance’ folder there are letters that address the financial structure of the SAC. This was a main concern because the SAC was originally funded entirely from the General Fund, which meant that all of the money its services made would automatically go back into the University and be equally divided among other campus institutions. There was also concern that under this structure the building would continuously be in a state of financial default. In order to avoid this, administrators of the SAC wanted it to be listed as an auxiliary institution of the University.

There is also a folder of issues that the SAC faced. Issues included, how encompassing the University’s insurance was in relation to unauthorized access of children and teams granted by current employees, and illegal entry by students using fake or duplicate IDs. There is a response written by Kim Ellertson concerning an article titled, “Staff ignored threat pools of blood posed.” There was also concern over improper videoing and photographing of people working out, as well as the loss of intramural sports fields due to the new football stadium and the expanding network of new facilities related to the SAC. An unusual issue that arose was the public protest following an Anheuser Busch visit. According to the letters, Anheuser set up their tent in the SAC on the same day as the Isabella County United Way was hosting a Red Hacker carnival for children. The matter worsened because a one-day liquor license was purchased for the SAC and the famous “Bud Girls” were allowed to freely walk around the building. Employees of the SAC felt that by allowing this to happen, especially during a children’s day, the University was living up to its party college name instead of dispelling it.

This box also contains several plans to try to offset the building costs of the SAC, including: a market plan to attract more outside donors and the selling of numerous University-owned properties.

Interesting documents to note are those concerning Riverwood Golf, which document the University’s desire to purchase a golf course, and those concerning the Ann Arbor Railroad Company when the University attempted to purchase the tracks that run through campus.

Processing Note: During processing approximately 0.25 cubic feet of duplicate materials were withdrawn from the collection and shredded.

This is a mixed collection, 1949, 2002, and undated, of information which includes constitutions, by-laws, meeting minutes of the SA and SGA, council meeting minutes from various dorms and other CMU organizations, reports, subject files, newsletters, and scrapbooks. Various topics and concerns of interest to students at CMU, including Homecoming in the Scrapbooks, are documented in this collection.

This is a collection of CMU SGA organizational records, 1979-2014, and undated. Among the documents featured in this collection are committee meeting minutes, budget, major topics of interest to the Student Government Association, packets of the Central Michigan University (CMU) Academic Senate and, especially, the CMU Board of Trustees packets, 2000-2010. Box 4 includes badges, certificates, plaques and a photograph (organized by size- from top to bottom of the box). Oversized materials include a scrapbook, organizational hierarchy chart, and three laminated posters. Box 5 includes photographs of unidentified CMU students and children from SIBS weekend events, 2002-2004. This event is sponsored by SGA. The posters in the oversized folder are housed separately in a map cabinet due to their size. The posters are not official published posters of CMU, but rather something SGA members must have created on their own.

Processing Note: Approximately 2 cubic feet of duplicates and oversized materials and 3 cubic feet of emptied binders were returned to donor as per donor form. Approximately 1 cubic foot of reports was added to the CMU vertical files.

Central Michigan University Student term papers from history, English, and other classes. These papers are sometimes the only source of information about Michigan people, events, or communities.

The collection consists of student term papers, mostly those from Dr. Dain’s History of Michigan class, and other (history, English, business administration, economics, geology, journalism, and sociology) classes at CMU. The term papers are sometimes the only source of history for a Michigan event, person, or community. The writing style and depth of research varies with each paper. If the paper's title does not specify what Michigan location the paper discusses, that information has been added by Clarke staff in parenthesis.

Papers from Professor Dain’s class are mostly in boxes 1-36. Papers from Professor Root’s class are mostly in boxes 36-40. Note: abbreviations in the box and folder listing are those found in the titles of the papers.

This collection includes scrapbooks documenting the academic years of the Theatre Department, 1939/1940-1965/1966 and 1970/1971-1972. Materials include production programs, music, photographs, newspaper clippings, and some correspondence.

Materials were removed from rotting, plastic binders, duplicates were sorted out, and miscellaneous materials removed. Remaining materials were filed into acid-free folders. Due to the overall high acidic content of the materials, nothing was photocopied.

The collection, 1939, 2003, and undated, includes photographs, photograph albums, scrapbooks, and plaques. The scrapbooks, 1939-1970, document campus activities and events and the student union when it was in Powers Hall/ Keeler Union. The scrapbooks consist of CMLife clippings on acidic pages. The rest of collection documents the staff, students, and events in the Bovee UC, including the period right after it was built. This information was generated by CMU staff and students. The 40th anniversary of the UC is documented in the Photograph Album, 2000-2003.

Overall the collection is in good physical condition, except for the scrapbooks, which are acidic and several of two of which, 1953-1959 and 1964-1970, have broken or loose covers.

Also included are meeting minutes, agendas, and related materials documenting related topical advisory boards that the director of women’s studies participated in. Materials are in alphabetical and chronological order.

Processing Note: Duplicate, out-of-scope materials, and temporary financial records (older than 7 years) totaling about 6 cubic feet were withdrawn from the collection during processing. Materials with social security numbers and other private information, about 1.5 cubic feet were shredded. Some materials were added from the CMU Vertical Files.

Chaney Family Papers, 1826-1950, and undated

The Chaney Family Papers include correspondence, notebooks, legal documents, essays, and photos, which are arranged alphabetically by topic. The correspondence spans almost 120 years and consists of correspondence between family and friends. A letter from L. W. Caryl to Henry Chaney, dated 29 July 1832, describes a method for early diagnosis and cure of cholera. Between May 1837 and January 1838, Isabella Caryl (then living in New York) received letters from several of her former school mates (who called themselves “The Hill Girls”) who had moved to Detroit. Among the notebooks is one of Willard Chaney’s medical notebooks. Of the seventeen photos in the collection, only one, Marjorie Chaney Bow (Henry’s granddaughter), is identified.

Charles Conn Michigan Railroad Collection, 1913, 2005, and undated

The collection includes 20,000 images, in various formats, of mostly Michigan railroad-related topics, as well as people, scenic views, bays, towns, fires, inside and exterior views, Camp Custer, World War I and II military, and lumber camps.

This is a collection of 41,1056images in various photographic formats, booklets, CDs, and databases of digital images and information. Most of the images were taken or collected by Mr. Conn although some small groupings of images were given to him by other senior railroad enthusiasts over time. The collection is physically organized by format and intellectually by topic. Most of the topics are railroad-related, engines, companies, lines, stations, and others are of people, scenic views, bays, towns, fires, inside and exterior views, Camp Custer, World War I and II military, lumber camps, notably, Day Lumber Company, Emmet Lumber Company, Yuill Brothers Lumber, and some unidentified lumber camps, the Cadillac Handle Company and the Antrim Iron Company.

The first part of the collection includes original images or scans (either positive or negative) that have been made into slides or negatives. This includes 13 boxes of slides (1 slide box), slide negatives and negatives (approximately 5.5 cubic feet in 6 boxes), a few photographs, glass-plate negatives of various sizes (2 cubic feet in 4 boxes), and booklets of reproduced images (approximately .5 cubic foot in 1 box). These materials are organized by format and then by alphabetically by topic. Most of the items are undated. Dates noted by the photographers are 1913-1914, 1916, and 1918. A few miscellaneous items, possibly related to the photographers have been retained in the collection (see Box 12, Photograph, 1918, and Letter, 1916.)

While most of the collection is in very good condition, a number of the slides suffer from peeling emulsions and cracks, as well as other damage, which are noted on each individual negative’s sleeve. Also, because of the damage the glass-plate negatives sustained, not all of them were scanned.

The second part of the collection includes databases of the digitized images and identifying information about the images. A copy of the database called Michigan Railroad.accdb is divided into Conn and Conn Neg, and a copy of the TIFF files, called MichiganRailroad, which is organized by subject, are both available in the Clarke reading room (as of October 2012) as well as on the archivist’s office computer. The TIFF files are organized by general subjects so the link between the two databases is not always obvious to a non-railroad enthusiast. Mr. Conn reused identifying numbers, so everything related to one location has the same number, which may mean multiple railroads in one city. There is also a hard drive for preservation purposes.

Charles Conn Michigan Railroad Collection Negatives includes negatives of Michigan railroads and other Michigan-related topics, as well as people, scenic views, and buildings in Michigan.

This collection, 3 cubic feet (in 3 boxes), undated, is the 2018 addition to Charles Conn’s Michigan Railroad Collection. As far as we know this material has not been digitized and therefore is not part of the Charles Conn Michigan Railroad Database. Box 1 of the collection includes negative pages with one page or more of a specific Michigan city or county with image subjects such as buildings, businesses, people, and scenic views. Box 2 is a continuation of city and county negatives, with multiple locations in each page of negatives. At the end of Box 2 begins negatives categorized by specific railways in Michigan. Lastly, Box 3 includes miscellaneous railroad negatives, logging negatives, and unidentified negatives of people and buildings. Two folders of interest are glass-plate negatives (2), undated, of a blacksmith and equipment on a flatbed car, and Railroad index, undated, which appears to index items in Conn’s other collection. The collection is organized alphabetically and by topic. It is housed mostly in the original negative sleeves provided by Conn.

The slide collection includes approximately 3,100 mostly black and white, but with some colored 35 mm slides of Michigan railroad companies, their cars, engines, tracks, wrecks, depots, workers; Michigan towns on railroad lines, and the people, organizations, events, and buildings in them; logging camps, their crews, trains, kitchens, big wheels, and river jams; ships and boats; special trains and train cars; and miscellaneous. Towns well documented in the collection include: Charlevoix, Deward, Ellsworth, Flint, Gaylord, Honor, Midland, Petoskey, and Traverse City, Michigan. Lumber companies well documented in the collection include: Stephan’s Lumber Company, Waters, Michigan, and Yuill Bros. Lumber Company, Vanderbilt (Mich.). Two negatives of an unidentified railroad depot and an inventory to the slides completes the collection.

The papers include legal papers of circuit court cases from Saginaw and Genesee counties, Michigan, his service records while Quartermaster of the Michigan Infantry, 23rd Regiment during the Civil War, and biographical materials.

Lists of other Littles are found in the deeds. Legal papers include circuit court cases from Saginaw and Genesee counties. His service records as Quartermaster to the Michigan Infantry, 23rd Regiment are likely to be of the most interest to patrons.

A number of the legal papers have blurred ink due to water damage.

The collection includes mostly photocopies of materials generated by various lawsuits, and other materials documenting Native Americans of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and First Peoples of Ontario, Canada, their history, culture, and relationship with the presiding government.Tribes documented are noted in the subject headings.

The collection includes mostly undated photocopies of materials generated by various tribal lawsuits against states and the United States (US) government in the collection. Some of the materials date back to the 1780s, but they are not originals, they are photocopies mostly made in the 1970s-1990s or later. There are some original reports and court records created during the time period of 1970-2008. The collection is rich in and dense in documenting Native Americans of Michigan, Minnesota, and Wisconsin, and First Peoples of Ontario, Canada, their history, culture, and relationship with the presiding government.

The collection is in original order. It is organized alphabetically by series by tribe or community seeking tribal status, reservation boundary (KBIC) case, tax case, or for hunting and fishing rights (Voight or LCO case) (105 boxes, 102.5 cubic feet). Within each series there are various subseries which may include: calendar documents (reference documents in chronological order), Cleland reports and reports of others (un/published), Cleland’s testimony as an expert witness, reference documents and/or un/published sources including newspaper or journal articles, books, maps, government reports, laws, land, legal and tax records, correspondence, business or personal records, excerpts from journals, diaries, and accounts, treaties, various US or Canadian court documents, miscellaneous and/or related documents, footnotes, project files, transcriptions of oral histories, finding aids, various types of maps, sketches, and genealogical and/or family charts. Lastly, nine oversized folders (larger than legal-size, about .5 cubic foot) include mostly photocopies of a wide variety of maps, treaty signers, genealogy notes and family tree, and land claims.

All boxes in the collection are 1 cubic foot boxes except for the following: Boxes #15, 25, 68, 74-75 are .5 cubic foot boxes; Box #113 is .25 cubic foot box, Box #117 is really an Overszied folder; Boxes #119-122 are 5x8 inch index card boxes.

Materials were collected from a plethora of local, state, and national archives and historical institutions, as well as tribal archives, and various courts, both American and Canadian.

Abbreviations: Professor Cleland and his staff used numerous, and sometimes various, abbreviations for institutions, record groups and/or series names or other citations. Some of these were obvious to the processors, others were not. Many of these abbreviations are not identified in this finding aid. For example, enclosure is abbreviated multiple ways. These variations were retained during processing. Some of these variations are obvious and can be deduced by researchers from the materials.

Also, due to the length of the collection, a number of abbreviations and grammatical changes were implemented by the archivist.

The archivist also deleted: ["no reference" and "incomplete reference"], the, a, or an (articles) at the beginning of a title; Anonymous or Author unknown or a.u.; unknown dates, undated, ND, or n.d. and s.u. Marian also changed: Microfilm to micro and “and” to and; and abbreviated certain common words, as noted below, and the names of months.

Also, the original punctuation used varies. A few of the original folder labels were crossed out partially or entirely. These variations were retained during processing.

Processing Notes: Only a few duplicate copies were withdrawn from the collection. Several items which had suffered physical damage mostly due to mud or dirt stains or being badly crumpled or torn were copied and the originals were withdrawn from the collection. (The total withdrawn from this collection was less than .25 cubic ft.).

The vast majority of the collection was organized into series by tribal name or topic, foldered, and labeled before it came to the Clarke. Original folders were maintained in the collection. We endeavored as much as possible to duplicate the original label headings (which varied somewhat from series to series) in the Box and folder listing. Items that were not foldered were foldered by the archivist, and those that were unlabeled were identified and labeled by the archivist.

Charles E. Scherzer Musical Collection, 1901-1927

Musical collection, 1901-1927, documents the music a Saginaw, Michigan, dance band played, and Michigan publishers, distributors of music, and/or composers, and some Michigan tunes.

This Musical Collection, 1901-1927, undated, 3.5 cubic ft. (in 7 boxes, 1 Ov. folder), consists mostly of published, copyrighted dance band music. This collection documents Michigan music publishing companies and distribution companies used by dance bands prior to 1930, and, to a lesser extent, some individual Michigan publishers and/or composers, including Susie Adams, Joseph H. Hughes, and R. Harry Richardson. The smaller publishers may have been Michigan town newspaper publishers. There are also some examples of tunes with Michigan or a Michigan town in the title. Overall the music is in good condition, but some of it is becoming acidic. There are some songs which are incomplete, missing, for example, a trumpet or viola part. All of the music is letter-size except for the one folder of oversized music.

Most of the music was published by the Detroit branch of New York publisher Jerome H. Remick. Other publishers include: Jos. H. Hughes, Saginaw, and Michigan Music P.C. [Publishing Company], Saginaw. [Joseph H. Hughes is listed in OCLC as a composer who worked with arranger R. Harry Richardson. They composed a patriotic song, “I love my home land,” which was published in Saginaw in 1917.]

The collection is organized as follows: Basic dance band music from these three publishers, organized alphabetically by title (Boxes 1-5); 2-sided, dance band music with one song printed on the front side, and a second song printed on the back side of the same piece of music, organized alphabetically by title (Boxes 6-7). The last two folders in Box 7 include Advertising Materials from the Jerome H. Remick Company, Detroit, 1913-1917, undated; and manuscript music for the tune “She Rests…,” composed by Susie Adams, stamped R. Harry Richardson Co., W. Bay City, 1901. Oversized materials (in 1 Oversized folder) include five songs, three published in Saginaw, two by Jos. H. Hughes and one by Williams Song P.C. The last two songs include one published by the Grinnell Bros., Detroit, 1908, and the song “Ypsilanti,” published by a Chicago firm, undated. For each piece of music the folder label includes: title, composer, publisher name and location, and date. All boxes are letter-size .5 cubic foot, except Box 5 which is letter-size .25 cubic foot.

Processing Notes: During processing approximately 5 cubic feet of materials were withdrawn from the collection and returned to the donor, as per the donor agreement. This material included duplicates, concertina music, published music journals and catalogs, and miscellaneous, peripheral items. A few Michigan business fliers or brochures were added to the Michigan vertical files.

Charles F. Ruggles Business Records, 1856-1941, and undated

Business records of Ruggles' lumber, gas, oil, railroads, salt and real estate business interests. Most are accounts, although financial records, leases, legal contracts, court cases and testimonies are included as well as a few personal family materials.

The business records document Ruggles’ vast business interests including: lumber, gas, oil, railroads, and real estate. Most of the records are some form of accounts, payment information, leases, or legal contracts. Also included are numerous published court cases or trial testimonies of his lengthy legal case against Buckley and Douglas Lumber Company and other legal concerns. The collection provides a solid look at his complex business dealings and the shrewdness with which he amassed his wealth and made numerous enemies. The only personal information is some family photographs and his will.

Charles H. Curtiss Papers, 1854,1926, and undated

The papers include family correspondence before, during, and after the Civil War, photographs, muster rolls, lists of military supplies and men.

The Papers include his personal and family correspondence, 1854-1878 and 1882-1926, mostly with his parents, brother (Frank), sister (Maggie), and his bride, or soon to be wife (Fannie Spencer). There are four diaries, 1860-1864, which like his letters discuss marches, battles, General McClellan and General Hooker, the treatment of soldiers, and cadets shot for desertion. Letters prior to and after the Civil War discuss life and business in Detroit. Part of the collection includes eleven muster rolls of Company E, 7th Michigan Infantry, June 1861-August 1863, and nine monthly returns, October 1862-September 1863. These are now separately housed with the collection of oversized Civil War muster rolls. Lists of military supplies and men killed may be found in Curtiss’ 1864 diary. There are also photographs of Curtiss and one of Fannie, including one of her in a 1855 New Testament. An illustration of the Curtiss homestead is found in one April 1907 issue of the Huntington Hills (p.3). Lastly, item index cards are available to assist researchers.

Charles Horace Hodskin Papers, 1861, 2003, and undated

The papers consists mostly Hodskin's Civil War letters and diary, and a 2003 student term paper based on the collection.

The collection includes correspondence between Charles and his wife and their friends. Charles’ diary and four Civil War era letters describe the weather, military drills, skirmishes with the enemy, the failures of General A. E. Burnside, heavy federal losses, many prisoners being taken, Negro troops, fighting, and marches to Bardston, Lebanon, Jamestown, and Memphis, Tennessee.

Also included is a 2003 CMU student term paper (74 pages) by Kathryn S. Anderson entitled “The 1863 Civil War Journal of Charles Horace Hodskin, 1836-1905,” which is a transcription of his diary.

The collection includes the family papers of Dr. Charles W. Marvin, an Assistant Surgeon of the 26th Michigan Infantry during the Civil War, and his children, Louis, Ella, and Burr.

The collection consists mostly of Dr. Marvin and Louis Marvin’s papers, with a few items of other family members. They offer a view of family life and work in Ithaca.

The papers consist of Dr. Marvin’s Civil War papers (mostly forms for supplies, ordnance, muster roll, and his muster-out certificate from 1864-1865; Family Biographical Materials, 1850, 1869-1902; Family Correspondence, 1850, from Rough and Ready, California, describing gold mining conditions, 1890-1900, and undated; Family Legal Papers (mostly land records), 1850-1899; Burr Marvin’s poetry booklet, undated; and diplomas of Burr, Ella, and Dr. Marvin, and a chemistry certificate of Burr’s, 1851, 1887-1908. A few published items complete the papers. One is about Northern Michigan Medical Association prices and resolutions (1864) and the other is about Ithaca’s Common Council (1881).

The volumes include Dr. Marvin’s account books (general), 1853-1869; and (doctor’s), 1884; and diaries, 1868-1901 (4 volumes). Louis Marvin’s account books, 1902-1904 and 1944-1946; diaries, 1875-1944 (76 volumes), a Blacksmith’s account book, 1852-1856; and the account books of Marvin Bros., 1863-1948 (5 volumes) complete the volumes.

Of particular interest here are the doctor’s account book giving dates, names, and health problems of patients, and fees. Dr. Marvin’s diaries have scattered entries noting some church and school activities and patients’ cases. In August 1885, he traveled to the Dakota Territory and Nebraska, writing detailed entries in his diary.

Louis’ diaries detail his various interests and pursuits including school, his experiences teaching in Frankenmuth (January-March 1882), and Ithaca; work in Texas (1883) and later as a printer in Ithaca; Dr. Marvin’s death (1902); service in county offices (1903); and service as a delegate to the Republican County Convention. His diaries, 1902-1944, mostly note farm work and events in Ithaca, his work to erect the H. R. Pattengill Monument on the lawn of the Ithaca City Hall (1924); and his organization of the H. R. Pattengill Reunions, 1888-1938.

Collection consists of correspondence, diaries, meeting minutes, records, printed matter and miscellanea of the church, microfilm of legal cases, and images.

This is one of the finest collections in the U. S. of Strangite Mormon material in the world housed in a public institution. A large number of publications from Strang’s Beaver Island printing press are included. More significant is an excellent collection of letters and diaries of his Strangite followers. Also, there is a strong photographic collection of Strangites.

Topics covered include Strangite Mormonism, the Beaver Island colony, various Mormon controversies, the question of succession, etc. The papers of James J. Strang, the Strang Family, and Strangite followers (disciples): Mark A. Strang, Lorenzo Dow Hickey, Warren Post, Wingfield Watson, Lloyd A. Flanders, Stanley L. Johnson, and Alexandre Roger Caffiaux complete the collection.

U.S. District Court vs. James J. Strang, cases 9-22 records, 1851, are microfilmed and in the Mark Strang papers in Box 4. Additional related letters are in the James J. Strang papers in Box 1.

Some materials are microfilmed while many materials are photocopied from other institutions. Additionally, small additions to the collection may be found in the Strangite Miscellaneous Collection, Lorenzo Dow Hickey, and Watson Wingfield collections.

The collection consists of 1,300 scans of images and 4 CDs of nineteenth century photographs, photograph albums, and negatives books from the City of Petoskey, which were scanned in 2013.

The collection includes approximately 1,300 scans of images and 4 CDs of scanned nineteenth century photographs, photograph albums, and negative books from the City of Petoskey area. Images in the collection include mostly Petoskey (Mich.) clubs, bay front, winter sports, Bear River, city hall, and people.

An inventory of the images is found in the first folder of Box 1, and the scans are housed in Boxes 1-2. Images were scanned both at 600 and 72 dpi. Box 3 of the collection contains digital CD-ROMs containing digital scans of the original negatives. The collection was loaned temporarily to the Clarke Historical Library so it could be scanned for preservation purposes in 2013. The collection came from several people, not just one department of the city. The original collection was returned to City Hall in Petoskey. For further information, see the inventory in Box 1.

A backup copy of all the scans and CDs is in a separate location in the stacks.

The collection was kept in its original order during processing. The collection contains only scans of original photographs, while the City of Petoskey maintains the originals. All digital CDs contained in the collection are housed in CD cases, stored in folders.

Clarence B. Beardslee Family papers, 1884-1951, and undated

Family papers include correspondence, account books, autograph albums, records of Dean Creek Threshing Company, state tax land deeds, and miscellaneous.

The collection includes the correspondence between Clarence and Lucy before they married, 1890-1896, and later correspondence with friends and relatives. Also included are Autograph Albums, Clarence’s Account Books, and records of the Dean Creek Threshing Company. The deeds in the collection do not name a Beardslee as a seller or owner. Miscellaneous materials include a program for a Detroit Provisional Imperial Klanvocational, June 30-July 9, 1923, with handwritten notes on speakers and officers, and the words to a Klan song based on the melody of “Michigan, My Michigan,” on the inside back cover.

Papers include family genealogical materials, Tuma's biographical materials, awards and certificates, photographs, DVDs and a cassette tape of anniversary and reunion celebrations, large framed photographs, and other materials documenting the Embers Restaurants in Mount Pleasant and Traverse City, Michigan..

The Clarence Tuma Papers consist of the Tuma family genealogy, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, speeches, recipes, menus, bank statements and awards and certificates. The topically grouped material is arranged alphabetically. Newspaper clippings,1960 – 2007, include information on Tuma’s World War II Service, The Embers, and the Rashid Family. Photographs consist of Tuma’s service in World War II, family, The Embers, and Rashid Family Reunions. A special note is to be given to three photographs in the collection of a funeral of an unidentified individual. Also included are awards and certificates, 1964-2007, and plaques comprising of the Trustee Appreciation Award, the Salut Au Restaurateur Award, and the Alumni Recognition Award. Oversize Folder 1 contains oversized documents such as bank statements and certificates. Oversize Folder 2 contains family photos. Oversize Folder 3 contains a photograph of the Embers Restaurant in Traverse City, Michigan. Oversize Folder 4 contains photos of the Rashid Club of America.

Electronic sources include DVDs of Clarence Tuma’s 80th Birthday, the 75th Reunion of the Rashid Club of America and the Lion’s Club Farewell to the Embers. A cassette tape is also included, which is titled “Congratulations Clarence and Janet Tuma.” A later addition includes a thank you note from Rosalynn Carter, 2015.

This collection includes postcards nostly created by children and teens in various Michigan cities which competed in the Clarke Historical Library DigMichNews Contests, 2015-2019.

This collection includes postcards created by children and teens in Alpena, Milford, and Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, from the 2015 competition 1 cubic ft. (in 2 boxes). Milford won the competition in 2015. A folder of information about the 2015 competition is in the front of box 1.

The 2016 competition postcards 6.75 cubic feet (in 14 boxes) include those created by children and teens in pre-schools, and both public and private schools in Alpena, Clinton County (supporting DeWitt Public Library), Houghton Lake, L’Anse. In addition to children’s postcards there are several folders of homemade crafty postcards created by adults in the Houghton Lake Public Library Craft Group. All of the Polish News competition postcards were homemade by adults associated with the Polish News in Detroit. Alpena won the competition in 2016. Schools were identified whenever possible. When identification was not specific minors are identified as students. A folder of information about the 2016 competition is in the front of box 3.

The 2017 competition postcards, 4.25 cubic feet (in 9 boxes), include those created by children and adults in L’Anse, Leelanau, New Baltimore, Oceana, and Utica. Three-dimensional, art, reproduced art, and composite image postcards are included. Specific schools or institutions were not identified. L’Anse won the competition in 2017 with Utica a close second. A folder of information about the 2017 competition is in the front of Box 17.

The 2018 competition postcards, 2 cubic feet (in 4 boxes), include those created by children, and a couple of adults, in Albion, Detroit, East Grand Rapids, Pontiac, Saugatuck, and Utica. Art and reproduced art postcards are included. While no specific schools were identified as contributors, Saugatuck District Library was identified as an institution were children created children’s art postcards for the competition. Saugatuck won the competition in 2018 while Utica came in second. A folder of information about the 2018 competition is in the front of Box 25.

The 2019 competition postcards, 1.5 cubic feet (in 3 boxes), include postcards mostly created by children. Postcards created, or probably created, by adults include some in the Grandville folder, including five reproduced historical photographs, and postcards in the Sparta Retirement Community and Sparta adults folder. Identified Sparta schools or school districts include: Algoma Christian Schools, Appleview Elementary, Kent City Schools, Ridgeview schools, and Sparta Middle and High schools. Sparta won the competition over Grandville. A folder of information about the 2019 competition is in the front of Box 30, and a folder about the 2020 competition is in the back of Box 32. Only a few people people identified themselves by first names in the Algoma, Kent City, Ridgeview, Sparta schools, and Sparta Retirement Community folders.

The collection is organized alphabetically by year of competition, city, then by topic. The collection is ongoing.

Processing Note: Duplicate mass-produced postcards were sorted and withdrawn from the collection. This includes approximately 4 cubic feet (2015), 1 cubic foot (2016), 1.5 cubic (2017), 1 cubic foot (2018), and 1.5 cubic feet (2019). The remaining postcards were compared to the existing Michigan postcards in the Clarke. Non-duplicates were then filed into the Michigan postcards collection. None of the children’s postcards were duplicates.

Clarkston (Mich.) photographic collection, 1880, 1920, and undated

The collection includes glass-plate negatives and prints of Clarkston, Michigan, people and buildings.

The collection nicely documents the people and buildings of Clarkston, Michigan, from the late 19th century through the 1920s. The collection includes both glass-plate negatives and some photographic prints which were printed from glass-plate negatives which are not in the collection. The only dated images, identified in the book, are dated 1906, 1910, 1913, 1917, and 1920s. Most of the images are undated.

The glass-plate negatives are all in good condition. They should be handled with care by patrons wearing gloves. They measure 4x5, 5x7, or 6.5x 8.5 inches. They have been divided by size and then by topic. Topics include Portraits of Groups, Children, Couples, Men, and Women; Houses; Photographers; Public Buildings; Schools; and Miscellaneous (funeral flowers, a collage of images, etc.). One glass-plate negative portrait of a photograph of a man in a mat includes “Grayling, Imperial Art Studio” on the mat.

The photographic prints made from glass-plate negatives are also in good condition. They measure 5x4 or 8x10 inches. They are divided into the same topics and include another topic, People with Horses. The prints are fine quality for the most part, showing great details. At least one of the prints was made from a partially broken plate with missing pieces (see Photographs, 8x10, Men Portraits, Undated). It is clear from the style of hair and clothing in these prints that a majority of them may date from the 1880s. None of the people are identified. It is possible that the photographic images are actually from another collection and may not be Clarkston natives. Over time it is possible that the two boxes came to be together because of size only. This, however, can not be proven at this point.

The collection consists primarily of Instructors Central Michigan University Semester Reports for instructors, professors, and departments, as well as some of Richtmeyer's biographical materials.

This collection consists primarily of Instructors Semester Reports, both for individual instructors and professors at Central Michigan University (CMU) and for the departments. The reports, which are dittoed forms, give the name of the instructor, term, year, and the number of A, B, C, D, and E grades given to the students in each course, as well as the total grades for each course. These numbers and grades were statistically compared to those received at other colleges and universities colleges that were accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools (NCACS). Professors and departments whose grades deviated from national statistics were invited to meetings with CMU President Charles L. Anspach to discuss the situation. Pres. Anspach then sent letters documenting the points and issues raised in these conversations to then Dean of Faculty Richtmeyer for further research, discussion, and evaluation. The purpose of these reports and the correspondence and discussions they generated was to guarantee that CMU would be accredited each time the NCACS evaluated it.

Richtmeyer is personally documented by his obituary, April 8, 1975 (copy) and portrait photographs (copies from the CMU Photograph Faculty files), 1966 and undated, as well as two relevant pages from the CMU Chippewa yearbooks for 1927 and 1969 (copies). Reprints of three mathematics articles he wrote are also included in this collection. A copy of the book he co-wrote with Judson Foust, Business mathematics (1959) is separately cataloged in the Clarke.
