This collection includes postcards nostly created by children and teens in various Michigan cities which competed in the Clarke Historical Library DigMichNews Contests, 2015-2019.

This collection includes postcards created by children and teens in Alpena, Milford, and Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, from the 2015 competition 1 cubic ft. (in 2 boxes). Milford won the competition in 2015. A folder of information about the 2015 competition is in the front of box 1.

The 2016 competition postcards 6.75 cubic feet (in 14 boxes) include those created by children and teens in pre-schools, and both public and private schools in Alpena, Clinton County (supporting DeWitt Public Library), Houghton Lake, L’Anse. In addition to children’s postcards there are several folders of homemade crafty postcards created by adults in the Houghton Lake Public Library Craft Group. All of the Polish News competition postcards were homemade by adults associated with the Polish News in Detroit. Alpena won the competition in 2016. Schools were identified whenever possible. When identification was not specific minors are identified as students. A folder of information about the 2016 competition is in the front of box 3.

The 2017 competition postcards, 4.25 cubic feet (in 9 boxes), include those created by children and adults in L’Anse, Leelanau, New Baltimore, Oceana, and Utica. Three-dimensional, art, reproduced art, and composite image postcards are included. Specific schools or institutions were not identified. L’Anse won the competition in 2017 with Utica a close second. A folder of information about the 2017 competition is in the front of Box 17.

The 2018 competition postcards, 2 cubic feet (in 4 boxes), include those created by children, and a couple of adults, in Albion, Detroit, East Grand Rapids, Pontiac, Saugatuck, and Utica. Art and reproduced art postcards are included. While no specific schools were identified as contributors, Saugatuck District Library was identified as an institution were children created children’s art postcards for the competition. Saugatuck won the competition in 2018 while Utica came in second. A folder of information about the 2018 competition is in the front of Box 25.

The 2019 competition postcards, 1.5 cubic feet (in 3 boxes), include postcards mostly created by children. Postcards created, or probably created, by adults include some in the Grandville folder, including five reproduced historical photographs, and postcards in the Sparta Retirement Community and Sparta adults folder. Identified Sparta schools or school districts include: Algoma Christian Schools, Appleview Elementary, Kent City Schools, Ridgeview schools, and Sparta Middle and High schools. Sparta won the competition over Grandville. A folder of information about the 2019 competition is in the front of Box 30, and a folder about the 2020 competition is in the back of Box 32. Only a few people people identified themselves by first names in the Algoma, Kent City, Ridgeview, Sparta schools, and Sparta Retirement Community folders.

The collection is organized alphabetically by year of competition, city, then by topic. The collection is ongoing.

Processing Note: Duplicate mass-produced postcards were sorted and withdrawn from the collection. This includes approximately 4 cubic feet (2015), 1 cubic foot (2016), 1.5 cubic (2017), 1 cubic foot (2018), and 1.5 cubic feet (2019). The remaining postcards were compared to the existing Michigan postcards in the Clarke. Non-duplicates were then filed into the Michigan postcards collection. None of the children’s postcards were duplicates.

The collection documents the club's history and finances.

The collection consists of Exhibit Scrapbooks and Correspondence documenting the history of the Creative Art Gallery and numerous exhibitions. Scrapbooks include photographs, drawings, programs, and newspaper articles about the exhibits and artists. Correspondence about exhibits was usually between the artist and Gallery discussing when, where, and what would be exhibited. Miscellaneous materials include an inventory of equipment of the Gallery, 1964-1965; Program Board correspondence, 19654-18965 about the Gallery’s programs; material related to a mini grant the Gallery received, 1973-1974; and an inventory of the Gallery’s art, 1980-1992. The collection is organized alphabetically by type of material and then chronologically.

The collection includes CD recordings of book signings, which is the focus of the collection, WCMU recording and release forms, a list of Michigan authors and their writings, a written calendar of Michigan authors’ book signings, and fliers for book signings.

The collection was kept by the Clarke in a number of folders, which were titled and dated. Materials were processed by format, then in alphabetical and chronological order. Materials covered by the Michigan Authors collection include CD recordings of book signings, which is the focus of the collection, WCMU recording and release forms, a list of Michigan authors and their writings, a written calendar of Michigan authors’ book signings, and fliers for book signings.

Processing Notes: One folder of peripheral material was withdrawn from the collection. Items that were fragile or acidic were copied and their originals withdrawn from the collection.

The collection includes Dr. Clarke’s biographical materials, papers, memorabilia, and his collection on the heart and his research interests.

The collection includes Dr. Clarke’s biographical materials, papers, memorabilia, and his collection on the heart and his research interests. The papers include certificates of appreciation, membership, degrees earned, an autobiographical manuscript, correspondence, materials related to his collecting interests, Polyclinic, professional papers he presented at conferences and associations, and published articles that he wrote. Correspondence includes both personal and professional correspondence, some of which relates to CMU and the CHL. The memorabilia includes plaques of appreciation, mason paraphernalia, and an academic hood, probably from CMU. His collection of publications and information about the heart, ethylene diamino tetraacetic acid (EDTA), endate, and chelation therapy reflect his research and professional interests. Also included are audiovisual materials, mostly cassette tapes, of research topics of interest to Dr. Clarke and a tape of an award dinner where he was honored for his long service to Providence Hospital. Photographs and other visual or illustrative materials are found throughout the collection.

A 2023 addition includes 1 folder of family photographs of Dr. Clarke, Sr. and his parents, Hannah Grove Clarke and James George Clarke, a veterinarian, and photographs of the veterinary office and livery stable, where he worked, and the family home. Other family photographs are of his wife, Lucile C. Hogan (1892-1968), and her extended Proud family, and a Vermont one-room school in Vermont where a Proud relative attended or taught. The photographs have tape and edge damage. Information taped to them about the images was removed and photocopied and a photocopy is found immediately after each related photograph.

The collection consists of the organizational records of Central Michigan University Clarke Historical Library.

The collection documents in text and images all aspects of the history and functions of the Clark Historical Library since its founding. Photographs are mostly in Boxes 7-8, but other images may be found in various publications and the scrapbooks.

An addition to the collection in 2021, Board Meeting Minutes (Boxes 12-17), 1962-2006, undated, may include agendas, attachments, reports, and board packets, and 1 box of board member correspondence and photographs.

Another 2021 addition is the Charles H. Wright addition, 1959, 1978, 1 cubic foot (in 2 boxes) features official government documents from African countries. Most folders are official Parliamentary Debates of the Eastern House of Assembly of Nigeria. Each packet includes who attended, the information discussed, and relevant recorded dialogue. Other materials included in the collection are an Official Gazette from the Republic of Nigeria, as well as multiple Monthly Digest of Statistics from Zambia. Multiple titles were separately cataloged.

The 2021 addition, No Acc#, Boxes 20-36 (7.75 cubic feet in 17 boxes) focuses on the Clarke Historical Library, though other materials include Frank Boles' professional correspondence and materials about the Park Library, Mid-Michigan Library League, Michigan Historical Review, and Clarke Historical Library Board of Governors 1954-2019. The Mid-Michigan Library League is one of Michigan's eleven library cooperatives and as of 2021, includes 36 libraries in 15 counties located in Michigan's lower peninsula. The Michigan Historical Review is a scholarly publication about Michigan history and joint venture of the Clarke and CMU's History Department. Some materials are in Spanish. The 2021 addition was arranged to match the organization of previous accessions to the collection. Some of the addition was interfiled into Boxes 10-11.

The collection is ongoing.

The collection documents the career of Professor Macleod. His papers are divided into two series: Department of History and CMU committees.

The papers document the career of Professor Macleod, especially committees and special projects at CMU, on the Academic Senate, and within the Department of History. As such the collection has been processed into two main series: Department of History, and CMU committees. Materials are then organized alphabetically and chronologically within each series.

There is extensive documentation of the Department of History through departmental agendas, meeting minutes, policies and notices, 1970-2000, as well as the various committees Macleod served on. Chief among these are the Graduate Committees and Strathclyde committees and correspondence, as well as International Education and Long-Range Planning committees materials which led to the creation of and support for the History Exchange Program between Strathclyde University, Scotland, and CMU, 1980s-1990s. Other committees, departmental projects and a myriad of issues, such as teacher education, certification, preparedness, and testing, use of graduates, writing requirements, are also well documented. CMU Department of History Newsletters, 1976-2004 (Scattered), are also included. With a folder of Professor Macleod’s Biographical Materials, the History Department materials compose most of the collection, Boxes 1 through part of 8, approximately 4 cubic feet. This series provides excellent historical documentation of the department, 1970-2000.

The second series consists of Boxes 8 (part)-12, approximately 2 cubic feet, and documents CMU committees, mostly Academic Senate and General Education committees, council, subcommittees, ad hoc committees, the graduate council, and the Clarke Historical Library Director Search Committee, all of which Professor Macleod served on or chaired. Materials include mostly correspondence, including emails, agendas, meeting minutes, related materials, reports, official “documents,” surveys, proposals, forms, drafts, resolutions. These materials provide very good documentation of the working, goals, and accomplishments of these departments. The last folder includes documents the crisis of loss of CMU’s faculty’s confidence in President Edward B. Jakubauskas, 1989, which resulted in his resignation.

Processing Note: All evaluations, vitas, personal information of others, and numerous miscellaneous notes, the main points of which were later incorporated into correspondence or reports have been withdrawn from the collection, as well as general reading materials, generic newspaper clippings, and numerous duplicates.

The Herbert H. Dow collection, 1900, 2013, consists mostly of copies of materials gathered by Kohrman for an exhibit in the Clarke Historical Library and a PowerPoint presentation he did on Brine in Mount Pleasant.

The Herbert H. Dow collection, 1900, 2013, consists mostly of copies of newspaper clippings, publications, patents, images, maps, scrapbooks, correspondence, major correspondence is with geologist Raymond G. Vugrinovich and British artist Arthur Henry Knighton-Hammond, taxes, obituaries, indexes and finding aids. Some original notes and publications are also included. The collection was gathered by Kohrman for an exhibit in the Clarke Historical Library and a PowerPoint presentation he did on Brine in Mount Pleasant. The collection is in original order as organized by Kohrman, with his index in the front of Box 1.

Additional collections by/about Kohrman are housed at the Clarke, while the ACS. Midland Chapter records are on loan to the Clarke.

Processing Note: Duplicates were returned to the donor. A number of the copies were made of originals in the Clarke. Five items were separately cataloged.

The collection includes videotapes of Central Michigan University events, units, buildings, programs, activities, research, and people at CMU.

Videotape collection, 1989-1995 and undated, includes Central Michigan University (CMU) campus scenes, numerous campus buildings, sports, alumni, professors, commencements, 1990 and 1995, students, Clarke Historical Library, theatre, dance, music, woodshop, Beaver Island (Mich.), Music Building ground breaking, 1994, and the centennial of CMU, 1992-1993. Titles are taken directly from video labels. Videos are 3/4inch videotapes (71/4x5x11/4inch Ampax 197 Master Broadcast Videocassettes).
