Professor of mathematics and later of law at the University of Michigan., papers include addresses and essays, family genealogies, class notebooks, and a draft manuscript and source materials for a history of the U-M Law School.

The Edwin Charles Goddard papers consist of addresses and essays on various subjects by Goddard and his wife Lillian; miscellaneous letters; notes and letters on European trip, 1908-1909; family genealogy; outline of an algebra course; University of Michigan law thesis; original manuscript and manuscript material for his history of University of Michigan Law School; Ann Arbor High School and University of Michigan student notebooks on courses by Henry C. Adams, James B. Angell, Isaac N. Demmon, John Dewey, Henry S. Frieze, Charles M. Gayley, Richard Hudson, Elisha Jones, Andrew C. McLaughlin, George S. Morris, Albert B. Prescott, Jacob E. Reighard, Volney M. Spalding, and Victor C. Vaughan. Also included are portraits of Goddard and of his mother, Mary Blodgett Goddard, and her family.

Correspondence, photographs, directories, lists of members and other material concerning reunions of the University of Michigan class of 1899; and an article on student loan funds at the University of Michigan, 1927-1928. Correspondents include James B. Angell (July 17, 1909) and William A. Comstock. Visual materials include images of Bursley, and a childhood photograph of Bursley's wife, Marguerite Knowlton Bursley.

This collection documents the personal and business activities of Jospeh A. Bursley. Materials include correspondence--notably, with the University of Michigan president James B. Angell and Michigan Governor William A. Comstock,-- directories, information regarding reunions of the class of 1899, an article on student loan funds at the University of Michigan, and a selection of photographs which include a childhood photograph of Marrguerite Knowlton Bursley. The material spans from the 1880s to 1950.

The Osborn collection consists of correspondence, diaries, business papers, scrapbooks, photographs, and other materials accumulated during his life. Materials prior to 1889 are scarce possibly because of a fire which destroyed Osborn's home; thereafter and up to the time of his death in 1949, the Osborn papers are voluminous, documenting each of this man's varied activities. Although his career as elected public official was limited to one term as governor, the collection reflects the importance of his life in areas beyond politics alone. His voice was heard, in letters and speeches and monographs, speaking out on the issues of the day - prohibition, conservation, the New Deal, and of course his life-long interest in the development of Michigan's Upper Peninsula economy and natural resources.

Portrait photographs of University of Michigan faculty, administrators and staff.

This collection contains portraits of about 750 University of Michigan faculty members. It is strongest for people who served on the faculty during the nineteenth century and in the 1930s, although a few portraits as late as about 1960 are included.

In addition to faculty, librarians, and research staff, the collection contains portraits of a few nineteenth-century campus characters, including Robert Howard, the bellringer, Jolly the Janitor, "Doc" Gregor Nagele, the Medical School janitor, and Jimmy Ottley, the campus postman.

The photos are arranged alphabetically. Outsize portraits listed in this finding aid are found in the medium-size photograph collection (UAm) under the name of the person.

In addition to these collections, faculty portraits can be found in the records of many schools, colleges, and departments, as well as in the papers of individual faculty members.

William Edward Wise was a student at the University of Michigan and graduated from the College of Architecture in 1951. He was a photographer for the Michiganensian yearbook and the collection documents football games and other campus events, 1948-1955.

The William Edward Wise collection documents the University of Michigan campus and events, 1948-1955 and consists of two series, Negatives and Prints. The Negatives series consists of 29 envelopes of 4x5 black and white negatives arranged in two subseries, Football, 1948-1951 and Other campus photographs, 1948-1955. The Football subseries consists of ten envelopes of negatives, four of which pertain to the 1951 Rose Bowl. The Other campus photographs subseries contains images of student groups, dances, campus landscapes and buildings, and other campus events during Wise's tenure as a student from 1948-1951. One additional envelope depicts the University of Michigan's North Campus in 1955. The Prints series contain four folders of prints relating to campus buildings, groups shots, sports and student life. Many of the prints appear to have been developed from the negatives in the collection.

This collection documents the personal research done by Philip Everette Bursley between 1939-1954 on the birth places and final resting places of five of the founders of the University of Michigan, as well as the first eight presidents of the university.

The Topical Files series contains research material including research correspondence, publication drafts, and hand drawn maps.

The Visual Material series consists of photographs of birth places and resting places of the founders and presidents, photographs of the founders and presidents or of paintings depicting the founders and presidents, and a scrapbook created by Bursley.

Notable individuals researched include University of Michigan founders General Lewis Cass, Governor William Woodbridge, Judge Augustus Brevoort Woodward, Reverend John Monteith, Father Gabriel Richard, as well as presidents Henry Philip Tappan, Reverend Erastus Otis Haven, Henry Simmons Frieze, James Burrill Angell, Harry Burns Hutchins, Marion LeRoy Burton, Alfred Henry Lloyd, Clarence Cook Little, Alexander Grant Ruthven, and Harlan H. Hatcher.

Student papers, 1930-1987 prepared for classes in history at the University of Michigan (primarily Michigan history class taught by Lewis G. VanderVelde, but also including research papers for classes taught by Sidney Fine and others); topics concern Michigan social and political history; Michigan biography and bibliography; and local community history.

The student papers are organized alphabetically by author in two series, which are similar in date range and topics covered. Topics of papers concern Michigan social and political history; Michigan biography and bibliography; local community history and University of Michigan history. A topical index to the papers is available in the first box of the collection.

The records include publications from inaugurations, State of the University Addresses, letters, and event programs. The most significant records are commission findings, essays and lectures, and university reports.

The publications of the President record the public life of the University President and document communication with the campus community and public about the concerns of the university in response to current events and pressures. The records span the years 1909 to the present, with the bulk of the collection covering the years 1985-2000.

The material includes publications from inaugurations, State of the University Addresses, letters, and event programs. The most significant publications are commission findings, essays and lectures, and university reports. These records document university investigations and responses to concerns such as women's issues and future university expansion. These publications also contain materials relating to bestowing honorary degrees, financial reports, and speeches to community organizations. Also included are some hard copy print-out examples of presidential email announcements. Some publications (or their successors) may no longer be available in print but are available on the school s website.
