Architect, inventor and educator, director of the Brooklyn Museum, and dean of the College of Architecture and Design of the University of Michigan. Notebooks, articles and reports relating to his work as museum director in Brooklyn, New York, and at the Pennsylvania Museum of Art, articles and notebooks, 1922-1924, concerning his work as Home Secretary of the Canton Christian College, Canton, China, and other materials relating to his work with the War Production Board during World War II, his architectural projects and inventions; and photographs.

The Youtz papers consist of notebooks, articles and reports relating to his work as museum director in Brooklyn, New York, and at the Pennsylvania Museum of Art, articles and notebooks, 1922-1924, concerning his work as Home Secretary of the Canton Christian College, Canton, China. The collection relates primarily to student demonstrations and protests over the visits of corporate recruiters to the University of Michigan in the period of the late 1960s to the mid-1970s. The series in the collection are Demonstrations and disturbances; Forums; University student organizations; and Miscellaneous.

Football coach and athletic director of University of Michigan, 1901-1940. Correspondence, addresses, scrapbooks, photographs and other papers relating to his interest in sports and family affairs; also papers of his wife Eunice Josephine (Fite) Yost.

Papers of Chia-Shun Yih, internationally respected scientist and Stephen P. Timoshenko Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Fluid Mechanics at the University of Michigan. Series in the collection are Biographical, Correspondence, Research and Writings, and Visual Materials.

The Chia-Shun Yih collection represents the life and work of an internationally known scientist who spent a significant portion of his career at the University of Michigan. The papers offer the most richness to those researchers interested in mechanics and hydraulics, a field in which Yih made major contributions, but they also include contain glimpses into the broad range of interests he cultivated throughout the years in literature and the arts.

Ann Arbor, Michigan photographer. Photographic images taken to accompany articles in the Ann Arbor Observer. Images include Ann Arbor businesses, buildings, neighborhoods, parks, landmarks; also photos of local personalities, politicians, business people, and University of Michigan faculty and staff members.

The Peter Yates collection is made up of approximately 5200 negative strips, or 26,000 images, of photographs taken for the Ann Arbor Observer between 1978 and 1990. The collection documents both the ordinary and the eccentric in Ann Arbor, as photographs of politicians, professors and business people are interspersed with images of local "characters" and unusual events. Neighborhoods, parks and buildings are also represented in the collection. The negatives are stored in chronological order, according to the date of the issue in which they appeared.

The index is arranged in alphabetical order by subject, and each entry includes the date of the Observer issue in which the photograph was published. The index is not comprehensive, but provides access to photographs of notable people, institutions and trends in Ann Arbor. For example, not every restaurant review photograph has been indexed, but "institutions" such as the Fleetwood Diner and the Gandy Dancer do appear on the list.

Director of media relations at the University of Michigan. Correspondence, articles, newsletters, annual reports, newspaper clippings, photographs, memorabilia, and miscellanea concerning trains and the railroad industry; also scrapbooks of Michigan sports.

The collection is arranged into five series: Correspondence; Writings; Railroads; Miscellaneous; and Scrapbooks. Much of the collection relates to Wyllie's great interest in railroad history.

University of Michigan professor of zoology and museum curator, participated in or and led several research expeditions to the Philippines, member of the First and Second Philippine Commissions and involved in several Philippines business ventures; records includes notes, correspondence, publications and photographs relating to research expeditions, service on Philippines Commissions business activities, of special interest are notes of a trip taken to Mindoro and Palawan in July of 1910 and papers pertaining to the special Wood-Forbes Investigating Mission to the Philippines in 1921.

The Dean C. Worcester papers filed at the Bentley Historical Library consist of correspondence, subject files, newspaper clippings, publications, and photographs pertaining to his activities in the Philippines. Of interest are notes of a trip taken to Mindoro and Palawan in July of 1910 and papers pertaining to the special Wood-Forbes Investigating Mission to the Philippines in 1921. The collection includes correspondence with William Howard Taft and Leonard Wood.

The Women's Research Club of the University of Michigan was founded in 1902 in response to the exclusion of women from the recently established all-male research clubs. Records include minutes, correspondence and reports of club officers and committees, papers concerning the club anniversaries, and photographs.

Records of the Women's Research Club include minutes, 1902-1999; correspondence, 1903-1939 and 1952-1994; membership lists 1904-1999; financial records 1903-1999; correspondence and reports of club officers and committees, including Loan Fund materials; papers concerning the 25th, 50th, 75th, 85th and 90th anniversaries; relationships with the men's research club; histories, memorials, photographs, and clippings.

Professor of Latin and director of the Division of Fine Arts at University of Michigan. Correspondence and newspaper clippings relating to his work and the affairs of University of Michigan; and photographs.

The Winter collection is comprised to six series: Correspondence, Institute of Fine Arts; Museum of Archaeology; Organizational Activities; Biographical / Miscellaneous; and Lectures, speeches, writings.

Professor of geology and paleontology at the University of Michigan, director of the Michigan Geological Survey, and chancellor of Syracuse University, popular lecturer and writer on scientific topics and as a Methodist layman who worked to reconcile traditional religious beliefs to nineteenth-century developments in the fields of evolutionary biology, cosmology, geology, and paleontology. Papers include extensive diaries, field notes and maps from travels and geological expeditions, correspondence, speeches, articles and other publications and photographs.

The papers of Alexander Winchell are those of an orderly man who carefully documented his own life through well-organized correspondence, diaries, notebooks, and scrapbooks. Winchell kept thorough evidence of his activities, writings, lectures, and thoughts, for most of his life. The only area that seems poorly documented is his university teaching. The collection does not appear to include significant material relating to relationships with students in the classroom.

"Alexander Winchell, an editorial tribute," published in The American Geologist (Feb. 1892, MHC call number DB/2/W759/A512), includes a year-by-year account of Winchell's life, based on the papers, and probably written by his brother N. H. Winchell. Although there are no footnotes in this work, it provides a useful summary of Winchell's activities and clues to the existence of documentation in the collection.

The collection is divided into six major series: Biographical, Correspondence, Diaries and journals, Writings and lectures, Reference and research files, and Scrapbooks; and three smaller series: Visual materials, Processing notes, and Card files.

Winchell's bibliography is located in Box 1 (the most complete copy is in the "Permanent memoranda" volume), and drafts of many of his writings are found in Boxes 8-14. Copies of many, but not all, of Winchell's publications are found in the MHC printed collection. The card catalog includes details for all separately cataloged items. There are also three collections of pamphlets that are not inventoried: two slightly different bound sets prepared by N. H. Winchell after Alexander Winchell's death (MHC call numbers DA/2/W759/M678/Set A and DA/2/W759/M678/Set B) and a two-box collection of pamphlets collected by the University Library (MHC call number Univ. of Mich. Coll./J/17/W759).
