The records of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan are a rich resource of material, not only for the programs and activities of the Episcopal Church in western Michigan, but also for their documentation of the role of the church in the life of the various communities served by the diocese.

Records from the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan first came to the Bentley Historical Library in 1972. Since then, the diocese has made several significant additions to their records. In 1999 the record group was reprocessed with the aim of drawing together like materials. The record group now consists of twenty-two separate series. These are: Bishop's Files, Chancellor, Treasurer, Diocesan Historiographer, Standing Committee Files, Miscellaneous Files, Diocesan Record Books, Publicity Files, Defunct Parish and Mission Churches Files, Diocesan Committee Files, Diocesan Organization Files, Diocesan Financial Records, Visual Materials, Sound Recordings, Scrapbooks, Western Michigan University (WMU) Ministry Files, Women's Organizations, Miscellaneous office and staff files Bulletins of Church Services, Church of Christ the King, Miscellaneous parish materials, and Miscellaneous diocesan materials.

Letters to his wife, Mary Soule, written while serving as an officer in the Union Army during the Civil War; Civil War diary, 1863-1865; a letter from Byron Stoddard of the Sixth Michigan Infantry; correspondence, 1890-1904, with J. C. Leonard who collected materials for University of Michigan Museums throughout the western part of the United States; literary manuscript of Annah May Soule; and photographs.

This 242-page diary documents the daily life of Sophia "Sofa" Miller, of Albion, Michigan, from 1875 to 1876. A devout Baptist, Miller recorded her attendance at various church services and meetings, her personal religious thoughts, and copies of hymns. She also chronicled the weather, household chores, and social activities.

This 242-page diary documents the daily life of Sophia "Sofa" Miller, of Albion, Michigan, from 1875 to 1876. She frequently recorded weather observations, details about her sewing work, and social calls received and made. As a devout Baptist, much of her social life centered on attending church services, prayer meetings, and choir practices. Miller was a teacher for Sabbath School, secretary of the Albion Baptist Women's Missionary Circle, and Vice Grand for the local Rebekah's lodge. Miller's relatives were also members of the Good Templar Society for temperance.

Miller copied several letters into the diary, including two to The Herald and Torchlight (a Baptist newspaper published in Kalamazoo). She also copied a number of hymns, including "Take My Life and Let It Be" and "I am Trusting, Wholly Trusting." Major events noted include house remodeling, visiting boarders, and Miller's niece, Altha, coming to live in her house while attending Albion College. Several entries concern rumored affairs, including one involving Miller's husband. The last page of the diary shows a recipe for chocolate cake.
