This volume, compiled in the 1820s, contains an encyclopedia article, extracts and writings, diagrams, tables, and newspaper clippings pertaining to the design and construction of canals.

This volume (450 pages), compiled in the 1820s, contains extensive information on the design and construction of canals. The first few pages include a manuscript subject index. Pages 1-155 consist of a printed encyclopedia article about canals, bound directly into the volume. Other articles and fragments of articles are included, including the entire entry for "Canada."

The remaining pages consist of manuscript extracts, writings, and notes about canals, illustrated with colored diagrams and drawings. The volume includes sections about types of locks; tunnels; drawbridges; excavation; building materials, labor, and costs; water supply; the effects of rain and evaporation on canals; and hydraulics. Sections focus on canals in the United States, England, Wales, and France. The manuscript contains tables of data about the number and length of canals in each country. Specific structures, such as the Ohio & Chesapeake Canal, Union Canal, and Erie Canal are described and used as examples throughout the text. Illustrations include diagrams of locks, tunnels, and canals; a depiction of a method for burrowing out soil using a horse and several workers (p. 370); and a map of France highlighting its canals (p. 424). Notes, newspaper clippings, and additional drawings are laid into the volume.

The Correspondence series (135 items) consists of personal letters written and received by members of the Quail family, particularly David Quail, Robert Quail, and two men named William Quail. Several of the earliest items, written in the late-18th and early 19th centuries, are addressed to John Hoge of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The Quail family correspondence regards family news and health, travel, finances, business affairs, and other subjects.

Robert and John H. Quail often wrote to Willliam Quail about life in Hillsborough and Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. One of William's letters concerns his meeting with United States Secretary of War William Learned Marcy about his offer to serve in Mexico (April 19, 1848). Mary Quail wrote to family members about her life in "Missouri City" in the late 1850s and early 1860s, occasionally mentioning the war. The bulk of the correspondence ends in 1891; later items include 5 letters from "Blaine" to "Anna" about Blaine's life in Philadelphia in 1890 and 1891, and a letter from a man to his uncle about life in Rangoon (March 18, 1899). Death notices for Catherine G. Quail (June 23, 1833), James Quail (August 7, 1834), and William Quail (June 5, 1837) are located at the end of the series.

The Writings series is comprised of 3 items: a poem by Robert Quail, a poem entitled "Ode to a Woman," and a partial essay about the ecliptic and astronomy.

Most items in the Receipts and Accounts series (156 items) pertain to the personal finances of Robert Quail. They regard his accounts with individuals and firms in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Items concerning William Quail and David Quail are also present. Three receipts for tuition payments for the education of Ann Moreland (paid by David Quail, 1826-1828), and 2 promissory notes (1722, 1819) are located at the end of the series. The series includes a daybook containing an unknown author's finances from January 29, 1849, to June 1856. The author lived in Washington, Pennsylvania, during this period.

The Documents series (62 items) contains legal records and agreements pertaining to land ownership, rent, and similar subjects. Also included are a will, a printed copy of the Pension Act of 1832, and Anna Grizella Quail's application to become a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution. A group of 34 court summonses and subpoenas signed by David Quail, 1822-1846, is located at the end of the series. A second subseries of 10 items, including letters patent, legal documents, and diagrams, concerns John Ferrel's patent for vehicle brakes, 1900-1906.

The 4 Miscellaneous items are fragments with brief calculations.

Rosa Boyer notebook, 1881-1887

Rosa Boyer, likely a student in Pennsylvania, kept this notebook between 1881 and 1887, in which she copied rhyming maxims and poems, wrote names of friends, produced various lists, and drew a number of pencil sketches.

Boyer drew people, animals, buildings, furniture and household goods, geometric designs, and one small map of South America.

Boyer also recorded the death of James A. Garfield. Several pages may have been used in relation to her education, such notes on the Pennsylvania congressmen and governor, sentence diagrams, a record of the numbers of days attended and missed from school, and a testimonial about her teacher Samuel S. Diehl.

The first section is comprised of a manuscript excerpt from S. John Peschell's Observations upon the Fitting of Guns on Board His Majesty's Ships. Peschell, who was stationed on the HMS San Domingo in Bermuda, provided instructions for mounting, firing, and otherwise working with guns onboard a ship. He also discussed some differences between the Royal Navy and United States Navy, and wrote about the battle between the Shannon and the Chesapeake. The text is accompanied by charts showing elevations and depressions of the San Domingo's guns and a copied letter from several ship captains to Admiral Richard Bickerton.

The remainder of the volume consists primarily of notes about naval vessels, intended for commanders. They concern ship construction, sailing methods, gunnery and first aid. Some instructions are accompanied by diagrams. Other information includes recipes, a list of items to be placed next to a ship's guns, and notes about ammunition. The end of the volume contains accounts of quill tubes, powder, shot, and wads on an unidentified ship from 1824-1825, and a list of addresses.

S. Houldsworth letter book, 1889-1890

The S. Houldsworth letter book contains letters that Houldsworth wrote to the firm Norcross Brothers about construction projects in 1889 and 1890. Houldsworth discussed building materials, specific projects, and other business matters.

The S. Houldsworth letter book contains around 170 pages of letters that Houldsworth wrote to Norcross Brothers about construction projects from November 30, 1889-May 1, 1890. The letters are written in reverse chronological order on pages numbered 133-300; the first 132 pages are not present.

Writing from Stony Creek, Connecticut, Houldsworth addressed most of his correspondence to Norcross Brothers offices in Worcester, Massachusetts; Boston, Massachusetts; and New York, New York. Some letters are addressed to O. W. Norcross. Houldsworth discussed several aspects of the construction business, such as hiring workers, building materials, building plans, and alterations to specific projects. Some of the earlier letters mention quarrying and shipments of stone. A few letters have small diagrams of building layouts and similar subjects. A partially used alphabetical index appears at the front of the volume.

Walter Pinkus was an Engineer in Research for the University of Michigan's Atmospheric, Oceanic, and Space Sciences Department's Space Physics Research Laboratory from 1966 to 1996. At the lab he conducted design work on instruments built for various National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) missions. The collection contains correspondence, schematics, project books, and research reports relating to the projects Pinkus worked on. Included in the collection are papers related to the San Marco program, Galileo spacecraft, and the High Resolution Doppler Imager (HRDI).

The Walter Pinkus papers encompasses Pinkus's time at the University of Michigan's Space Physics Research Laboratory. The papers date from 1965 to 1996and include correspondence, schematics, project books, and research reports on instruments built for various National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) missions. Included in the collection are notes from the Galileo space probe project, the San Marco program, Mars Upper Atmosphere Dynamics, Energetics, and Evaluation (MUADEE) project. The arrangement of the collection follows Pinkus's arrangement of the materials.

Willis V. Daugherty letters, 1917-1920 (majority within 1917-1919)

This collection consists of letters that Ensign Willis V. Daugherty wrote to his mother while studying at Harvard University and serving as a United States Naval Air Corps pilot during the First World War. At Harvard, Daugherty wrote of his financial difficulties, coursework, and social life. While in the Navy, he described his training at naval air stations in Key West and Pensacola, Florida, including details of his flight maneuvers and life in the military.

This collection contains 110 letters that Ensign Willis V. Daugherty wrote to his mother, Louella Daugherty, while studying at Harvard University and serving as a United States Naval Air Corps pilot during the First World War. The collection also contains one additional letter that Louella Daugherty received from her friend "Emma" (June 4, 1918).

Willis Daugherty wrote 2 letters while traveling from his home in Wichita, Kansas, to Cambridge, Massachusetts, in September 1917, and frequently told his mother about his life at Harvard, detailing his financial difficulties and campus activities. In one letter, he anticipated attending a speech by Franklin Delano Roosevelt (January 13, 1918). After receiving an application from the United States Signal Corps in early January 1918, he began to contemplate joining the military and became a member of an "aero club."

Daugherty was formally called to join the Navy on May 7, 1918; in June, he became a member of the naval air corps. Two months later, he was stationed at the naval air station in Key West, Florida, where he trained as a pilot. In his letters home, he discussed training exercises, camp life, and fellow trainees; on August 8, 1918, he diagrammed sample maneuvers. After transferring to Pensacola in September 1918, where he flew less often, Daugherty reflected on the station's more relaxed attitude, due in part to expectations of an armistice. Pilots were placed on quarantine in October to prevent the spread of influenza, and Daugherty concentrated more on his daily work and gunnery training than on flying. On December 22, 1918, despite reporting that he had been recently promoted to ensign, he anticipated being released from the service. During this period, he often discussed the future of the aviation industry, including the impossibility of selling used naval aircraft to civilians (January 30, 1919) and his expectation that the industry would grow similarly to the automobile industry (February 6, 1919).

On his return to Boston, Daugherty wrote of resuming his life at Harvard, describing his coursework and Harvard's 1919 Class Day, which featured opposition to Prohibition (June 18, 1919). Daugherty also wrote 2 letters in May 1920 about his plans for commencement and the financial success of former military pilots.

Zaccheus Brown notebook, 1782-1783, 1789

The Zaccheus Brown notebook contains information compiled between 1782 and 1783 on arithmetic, sailing and navigation, and surveying, as well as a log of the Phoenix's voyage from New Jersey to the Virgin Islands in 1789. Mathematical and navigational problems are often illustrated with diagrams, and the volume also contains an example of a Mercator chart of the Caribbean.

The Zaccheus Brown notebook (175 pages) contains information on arithmetic, sailing and navigation, and surveying, as well as a log of the Phoenix's voyage from New Jersey to the Virgin Islands in 1789.

The first 112 pages, compiled from 1782-1783, are comprised of information about mathematics and sailing and contain a brief ship's log. Mathematical subjects include square and cube roots, geometry, and plane trigonometry; Brown copied and solved mathematical problems, which are often illustrated with diagrams. Instructions for aiming cannons appear in the section about trigonometry. Brown also described sailing methods such as plane, traverse, oblique, Mercator, parallel, middle latitude, and current sailing, as well writing instructions for turning a ship windward and for determining location. The parts of the volume concerning sailing also contain problems, diagrams, and an example of a "Plane Chart" and "Mercator's Chart." The Mercator's chart shows the locations of islands in the northern Caribbean Sea. The notebook's other subjects include the compass, calculating the phases of the Moon, and the Gregorian calendar. A final section pertains to surveying.

Zaccheus Brown's notebook also contains logs concerning the voyage of the Endeavour (9 pages) and the schooner Phoenix (58 pages). The Endeavour log, attributed to "L. H," notes the ship's journey "from the Cape" in late June and early July 1783. The Phoenix log details Brown's voyage from June 17, 1789-September 1, 1789 from Salem, New Jersey, to the Virgin Islands and back to Virginia. Some of Brown's daily entries about his voyage on the Phoenix include charts recording the ship's course and position, along with additional remarks on wind speed and direction. Brown occasionally discussed other aspects of his voyage, such as the pidgin language spoken by the ship's Dutch crew and his premonitions after bad weather and delays. He also described the port and the island of Saint Thomas, a Dutch colony (currently part of the United States Virgin Islands).

The volume contains illustrations of a man in the sun, a compass rose, and a fish and man; the latter drawings are flourishes on the heading for the section of the book on cube roots. The back endpaper includes a table of angles related to navigation.
