The Caribbean vacation photograph album contains 110 photographs compiled by an unidentified traveler during visits to several Caribbean countries and territories.

The album (30.5 x 25.5 cm) is bound with gray leather. All photographs are unmounted and most are accompanied by hand-written and printed captions including dates. It remains unclear whether the dates listed with captions (ranging from 1892 to 1897) refer to when a photograph was originally taken or when the photograph was acquired by the album's anonymous compiler. Certain photographs appear to have possibly been reproductions of earlier daguerreotypes, ambrotypes, tintypes, etc. Most images were commercially produced by professional photographers, some of whom are identified in captions.

Caribbean locations represented include Cuba, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Grenada, Jamaica, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, Barbados, Antigua, Guadeloupe, Trinidad and Tobago, Grenada, and Curacao. Also present are views of Caracas, Venezuela, as well as St. Augustine and Rock Ledge in Florida. In addition to street scenes, landscapes, occupational portraits, and architectural views, there are also numerous images depicting local civilians engaged in various activities, including many portraits of Afro-Caribbean men, women, and children.

Contents include views of the Alcazar Hotel and a slave market building in St. Augustine; a silk tree, The Queen's Staircase, and a banana garden in Nassau; views of Columbus Cathedral, Columbus Memorial Chapel, the Tomb of Columbus, an Afro-Caribbean stagecoach driver, Moro Castle, and Our Lady of Mercy Church in Havana, Cuba; the Cienfuegos Cathedral and plaza; a group of people performing a "Zapatec Dance (sic)"; views of the steamers Orinoco and Trinidad likely shown docked in Hamilton Harbour, Bermuda; the Princess Hotel, Harrington Sound, Pyramid Rock, Hungary Bay, Tucker's Cave, "Queen Cave," and St. Peter's Church in Bermuda; the H.M.S. The album (22 x 17 cm) is lacking covers. The exposed cover page bears a montage photograph showing printed flowers with an inscription reading "A Merry Christmas / 1897" as well as a portrait of an unidentified young man. Images of note include views of Clinton Prison, the "Warden's Garden" dedicated to Warden Walter N. Thayer, the Clinton Prison chapel, Chazy Lake and waterfalls on the Saranac River, a studio portrait of a man with a safety bicycle, and a group shot of 22 uniformed men captioned "W. N. Thayer Hose Company." Also present is a loose photograph of a dirt road in Saranac, New York.

The Crum-Ely family photograph album contains studio portrait photographs of individuals and groups living in Ohio. There are 28 cabinet photographs and 14 cartes de visite, and many pages include hand-written identifications of the subjects in the photographs.

The Crum-Ely family album (27.25 x 21.5cm) is a 34 page maroon plush velvet album containing 42 studio portrait photographs of individuals and groups living in Ohio and other Midwestern states. The people featured include members of the Crum, Ely, Folck, Matthias, Greer, Gilbert, and Riddle families. There are 28 cabinet photographs and 14 cartes de visite, and many pages include hand-written identifications of the subjects in the photographs.

The photographs were taken in West Unity, Bryan, Wauseon and Fayette, Ohio. There are also portraits from Osage Mission, Kansas and Bowman, Missouri.

Of note is the portrait of two women and a dark skinned man serving them.

There is a humorous occupational portrait of "Ed and Griffin" as tailors.

The album (25.5 x 30.5 cm) has dark green cloth covers with “Photographs” stamped on the front cover. All of the album pages are loose and fairly brittle, but the images are in generally good condition.

The first page contains sixteen signatures from participants in the 30th reunion of the Union College class of 1885. Subsequent photographs include several views of Union College campus, aspects of student life (including dorm room interiors and a group of portraits showing crossdressing men captioned “Minstrels"), and formal portraits of members of the Kappa Alpha Society in the mid-1880s, presumably including some of the attendees at the reunion whose signatures are represented.

The unidentified presumed compiler of the album can be seen in several photographs. He appears to have been an engineer specializing in infrastructure projects for electric-powered rail systems and was active in the early stages of when railroads in the United States were moving towards electrification. Many of the smaller circular photographs found throughout in the album were likely produced by a Kodak No. 2 camera, while larger format prints and cyanotypes are also present.

Contents are arranged chronologically starting with the compiler's student days before focusing on various professional assignments and elements of his personal life. During the ten years following his graduation from Union College the compiler apparently participated in several railroad development projects, mainly in what would become Washington State but also in Kansas, Oklahoma, and Idaho. Photographs from this period of his life include views of survey camps along the Columbia River and other regional waterways, interior and exterior views of the compiler’s home in Tacoma, portraits of his growing family, and snapshots of Klickitat people (including a group portrait of three women picking hops). By 1896 the compiler and his family appear to have moved back east, settling in New Rochelle, New York. Photographs from this period include documentation of projects on intercity lines on Staten Island and other nearby boroughs, a project in upstate New York, and numerous images of friends and family. The Albany and Hudson Railway and Power Company’s new electric train line to various towns between Hudson and Albany required establishing power sources along the route. As a small group of photographs in this album show, this necessitated constructing a dam at Stuyvesant Falls on the Kinderhook Creek which would provide electric power to the rail line and various local businesses. The final pages of the album document the construction of Hudson Park Dock in New Rochelle as well as leisure activities such as the 1906 Vanderbilt Cup auto races and a naval review in Oyster Bay.

A total of 18 loose photographs are included towards the back of the album. Images include a group portrait of Union College students from the 1880s, a studio portrait of a young woman and infant taken in the mid-1890s in Tacoma, and a double exposure of a woman standing next to an automobile in Jacksonville, Florida, in 1918. Also present is a printed pamphlet replete with numerous halftone reproduction images titled “Letter from Mayor Clarke to the Voters of New Rochelle with Pictures of Improvements Under His Administration” which highlights several civic infrastructure projects (including the Hudson Park Dock) undertaken during the tenure of mayor Henry Clarke.

The English carte de visite album (14.5 x 20.5cm) is a 50 page leather album containing portrait photographs of individuals and couples as well as two Italian views. Many of the images in the album were taken by well-known photographers such as André-Adolphe-Eugène Disdéri, Napoleon Sarony, and Félix Nadar.

The photographer's logo of each photograph is visible on the opposite side of the page, and some of the photographs contain hand-written biographical notes on the back.

Individual portraits in the album include those of Dr. Thomas Hodgkins (1798-1866) and his wife Sarah Frances Hodgkins (1804-1875), as well as of Charles Ferdinand, Prince of Capua (1811-1862) and his wife Penelope Smyth, Countess of Mascali (1815-1882). Of note is a portrait of a man taken by Sarony that has on its verso the manuscript inscription "Timothy Harrison/ Richmond/ Indiana." There is a Timothy Harrison, orginally from England, who was buried in Earlham Cemetery in Richmond, Indiana in 1881 at the age of 48. This is presumed to be the man depicted in the portrait.

The album (18 x 27 cm) is half bound in brown leather with brown cloth boards. Washington, D.C.-related views include the White House with an interior ballroom, the Washington Monument, the Teasury Building, the U.S. Capitol, the Smithsonian Castle (with the Capitol in the background), and the Senate and House chambers. Camping-related images include photographs of a wooded lakeside area showing campers hiking, boating, painting, fishing, playing guitar, reading, and contemplating the scenery. In one view of a tent encampment in a grove of trees, a table is set for a meal, and a man stands beside a camera on a tripod. Several people from the camping trip are shown in various other settings: in a back garden, in front of a frame house with fencing, and in several Victorian-style interior rooms. Additional photographs show the Maplewood Hotel in Bethlehem, New Hampshire, and a boardwalk (possibly in Atlantic City, New Jersey).

The album (27 x 37 cm) is book bound and an inscription on the spine reads "Germany, Austria, France 1888 Daniel." Images begin with scenes in Germany including views of Cologne, castles on the Rhine, Leipzig, and Berlin and the City Palace. Also present are images of the Sanssouci in Potsdam, the cities of Dresden and Carlsbad and Vienna, Austria, as well as photographs of works of art, Munich, and Baden-Baden. The album finishes with a series of images of French scenes including views of Strasbourg, Montecarlo, Monaco, Cannes, and Marseilles.

The album (25.5 x 22 cm) has red and orange velvet covers with silver adornments and clasp while the pages are faux wood boards. Contents include 10 cabinet cards, 5 tintypes, 8 cartes de visite, 1 real photo postcard, 1 snapshot, and 1 silhouette. All or most subjects appear to be African American and include men, women, and children of a variety of ages. The silhouette shows a man in profile wearing a bowler hat smoking a cigar.

Images of particular note include portraits of an older man with a long beard, an older woman wearing black mourning clothing, a younger woman posing next to what appears to be some type of doll or taxidermied animal, a portrait of a woman taken by Pirie MacDonald on pg. 11 (produced at some point prior to MacDonald's decision to exclusively photograph men), and two carte de visite copies of a portrait of a bearded man with lighter skin.

The album (13.5 x 10 cm) has embossed leather covers and a broken metal clasp. The album spine has completely deteriorated and all pages are completely detached from one another. For conservation and preservation purposes, all original photographs have been removed from their album page slots and replaced with facsimile copies. The original photographs are stored in a separate container along with the album.

Most of the individuals represented in this album have been tentatively identified through the presence of inscriptions made on album pages; all or most of the subjects appear to have been biracial/African American. Many page captions appear to be associated with friends and family members of the Vaughn family (alternatively spelled “Vaughan”) of Oberlin, Ohio. One group portrait of two boys present in the page captioned “John & Louis Vaughn” may depict brothers John Sewell Vaughn and Wendal Louis Vaughn, the latter of whom went on to become a professional photographer. While it remains unclear who the original compiler of the album was, it is possible that it was assembled by either a member or close friend of the Vaughn family.

  • “Aunt America Vaughn Clark”: Tintype portrait of a young woman. Possibly America Vaughn Clark (approximately 1845-?) of Gallipolis, Ohio. Includes revenue tax stamps on verso dated January 16 1866 as well as pasted-on clipped newspaper obituary for a woman named Maude Cooper Horton (1880-1903). The obituary mentions a surviving three-year-old daughter by the name of Louise; a Columbus, Ohio, death certificate for a Louise Horton (1900-1918) with parents listed as “Maud Cooper” and “William Horton” indicates that this family was "colored."
  • “Will Vaughn”: Carte de visite portrait of a man with a large mustache by H. M. Platt of Oberlin, Ohio. Possibly William Craddock Vaughn (approximately 1835-1912)
  • “John & Louis Vaughn”: Carte de visite group portrait of two boys by H. M. Platt. Possibly John Sewell Vaughn (1857-1931) and Wendel Louis Vaughn (approximately 1860-1918).

Views include the hunting lodge in winter, waterfalls, mountain scenery, and club members and families. Men, women and children are shown canoeing, fishing, reading, and eating on the lodge veranda. Photographic portraits of 5 club members include John Rogers Hegeman, president of Metropolitan Insurance Company, and a man posing with a falcon perched on his hand. Additional photographs show outdoor excursions in the Badlands, Rocky Mountains, Gulf of Mexico, Florida and the Miramichi River (New Brunswick). Affixed to inside back cover is a photograph of a pencil drawing of a man riding a galloping horse with caption "All farewells should be sudden," Indian [T?]y, 1873.

The album has black cloth boards and is partially disbound. Lacking front cover. Stored in an upright gray Hollinger box.
