Joseph Savage of Syracuse, New York, kept this account book to keep track of credits and debts, largely associated with his farm, real estate, and ice business. The agricultural accounts relate to growing potatoes and other crops. Other entries regard taking in rent from tenants. The ice business prompted accounting for "repairing ice house," "days work packing ice," "work on lake," "drawing ice," "packing ice," and other such labor. The final accounts pertain to the estate of his wife Lydia P. Savage.
The volume contains tipped-in notes, receipts, a letter, and an 1859 printed circular related to electing the Board of Directors of the New York Central Railroad. The final pages of the ledger include memoranda, diary-like entries about running the farm, and boarding. One page is a list of subscriptions for various newspapers.
