Detroit businessman, active in many civic and philanthropic activities, a founder and president of the National Italian American Foundation and a founding director of Legatus, an organization of Catholic business leaders. The Frank D. Stella collection documents the career of a Detroit businessman, who devoted much of his time and energy to many philanthropic, cultural, and civic endeavors. The collection consists of his files from a selection of his organizational responsibilities relating to Italian American organizations and causes, to state and national Republican Party fund raising and campaigns, to Roman Catholic schools and organizations, and to the betterment of life (cultural, health services, etc.) of the greater Detroit area.

The collection has been arranged into the following series: Biographical / Personal; National Italian American Foundation; Republican Party activities; Orchestra Hall Renovation; Legatus; Various community, fraternal, and charitable activities; and Photographs. Portions of the collection are more fully processed than others. Most series are arranged, as Stella maintained the files, into broad chronological divisions. Only the Orchestra Hall series and the Photographs series have been arranged and described in more detail.

The Rosemont Papers comprise the writings, papers, and correspondence of Franklin and Penelope Rosemont. Major subjects include the Surrealist Movement in Chicago, the United States, and internationally; the publishing activities of Black Swan Press and Charles H. Kerr Company; the Industrial Workers of the World (IWW); and labor history. The collection includes original artwork, photographs, poetry, and published and unpublished manuscripts by the Rosemonts and their contemporaries.

The Franklin and Penelope Rosemont Papers contain materials related to the activities of the Chicago Surrealists Group and its members, surrealism movements around the world, and the evolution of surrealist thought, writing and art from the 1960s through 2009. The papers contain notes, notebooks, drafts of manuscripts, and published and unpublished work, as well as original artwork by the Rosemonts and by their friends and correspondents. There are photographs distributed throughout the collection; however, the Current documents (2000s) and photographs (1960-2010) series includes a significant number of photographs that feature the Rosemonts and their activities. The final three series are dedicated to correspondence; however, correspondence is also interspersed throughout a few of the other series. A number of the published journals as well as a handful of calendars have been removed from the collection and can be found by searching the library catalog.

A collection of historical booklets on the history African Americans in Battle Creek and Calhoun County, Michigan, compiled by historian Frank R. Brown. Subjects include African-American churches, education, sororities, fraternities, and social clubs, minority-owned businesses, women’s sports, and the arts. Also includes histories of Battle Creek chapters of the NAACP and the Urban League Guild.

The Frank R. Brown papers consist of histories on a range of topics related to African American cultural, civic, and commercial life in and around Battle Creek, Michigan. The materials were compiled by Frank R. Brown, some with the help of members of the Black Heritage Committee, based at Mt. Zion AME Church. The histories include brief narratives written by Brown; photocopies of clippings, newsletters, and other documents; photographs; and occasional letters to Brown and others. Subjects include general histories of African Americans in Battle Creek, churches, education, social clubs, sports, the arts, minority-owned businesses, the Battle Creek branch of the National Association of Negro Business and Professional Women's Clubs, and the celebration of the 200th anniversary of Sojourner Truth's birth. The church histories document the Fourth Episcopal District of the AME Church, the AME Church in Marshall Michigan, and a number of African-American churches in Battle Creek. Also included are histories of the Battle Creek chapter of the NAACP, the Southwestern Michigan Urban League Guild, and several Urban League programs, newsletters, and pamphlets. The histories have been arranged into three series: Black Heritage Committee Histories; "Old World Background, New World Experiences" Histories; and Miscellaneous Histories and Related Items.

Materials he created include: his co-written article with Jackson, an invitation letter from American Veterinary Medical Association and his speaking notes, his Outline for Bitter Harvest, his personal health records, speeches, speaking notes, and his testimony before the Michigan House of Representations (1974) and US House of Representatives (1978). Materials he collected includes newspaper, magazine, and journal articles in which he is cited, thanked, and/or discussed, remarks by Governor William G. Milliken about Toxic Chemicals in Michigan, June 24, 1978 and PBB history/legislative report from Milliken administration, undated [1978], and Remarks by Lt. Governor James H. Brickley about PBB in Michigan, October 4, 1978, and reference materials about PBB. A 1986 VHS videotape of Bitter Harvest was separately cataloged. The collection is organized alphabetically and in good physical condition, with some acidification.

Researchers may also be interested in other PBB research manuscript collections and secondary sources about PBB in the Clarke Historical Library, including the memoir, Bitter Harvest (1978).

Processing Note: During processing social security numbers were blacked out on copies of health records and those pages were photocopied. Extremely acidic materials were photocopied and the originals, as well as duplicates of other materials (1 folder total), were withdrawn and returned to the donor, as per the donor agreement.

The Frederick C. Matthaei Jr. papers (24 linear feet, 2 oversize boxes, 1 scrapbook and 2.20 GB) contain the materials of University of Michigan alumnus and Detroit area businessman Frederick C. Matthaei Jr. The materials highlight Matthaei's personal background, interests, philanthropic and outreach work, and his dedication to the University of Michigan. The collection been divided into three series:

The Personal Materials series contains bibliographical information, personal correspondence, scrapbooks, and photographs.

The Projects series contains materials from Matthaei's work with a number of different organizations including the Detroit Olympics Project, the Economic Alliance for Michigan, and the Detroit Renaissance project.

The University of Michigan series includes materials related to Matthaei's term as Regent of the University of Michigan, his involvement in alumni organizations, and general records from the University of Michigan.

Fred E. Schwab was an influential member of the plastics community in the Detroit area. A German immigrant, he opened and ran several plastic manufacturing businesses, including Schwab & Frank and Schwab Plastics, which focused on styrofoam products and later automotive parts. He was also a founding member of the Society of Plastics Engineers. The collection includes personal materials, photographs, and professional files relating to his association with various plastics firms.

The Fred E. Schwab collection has been divided into three series: PERSONAL LIFE, PLASTICS, and PHOTOGRAPHS. The collection documents Schwab's professional endeavors in the plastic community in addition to elements from his personal life.

The Friends of the Jordan River Watershed. Records contains the organizational and non-organizational records of conservation activities pertaining to the Jordan River and other fresh water bodies in the northwest corner of Michigan's Lower Peninsula.

The Friends of the Jordan River Watershed Records makes a significant contribution to understanding late twentieth and early twenty-first century environmental advocacy within the state of Michigan, especially in the Lower Peninsula's northwest corner as it relates to conservation of freshwater systems. Further, FOJ's engagement with state and local government agencies illuminates the ways in which it has been able to increase the political and regulatory salience of environmental protection, despite and amidst the simultaneous rising influence of energy companies. The records will be useful for any researcher seeking to explore these dynamics and many others related to environmental justice.

This collection consists of original artwork by Gabby Schulz, also known as Ken Dahl, an American cartoonist.

The majority of the collection consists of ink and watercolor pages from Schulz's graphic novels, particularly Sick and Welcome to the Dollhouse. The journal, labeled "Sick etc." by the artist, contains drafting for Sick as well as some personal journaling. Other artwork includes various screenprint transparencies and a poster for a 2017 Black Lives Matter flag-raising event.

Books, correspondence, photos, contracts, manuscripts, magazines, and ephemera relating to the works of playwright and screenwriter Clifford Odets.

This collection is organized into eight series.

The Books Series consists of published stage plays and screenplays written by Odets, books belonging to or inscribed by Odets, biographical publications about Odets, novels that Odets adapted into screenplays, and stage plays written by other Group Theatre writers. The bulk of the Correspondence Series is Odets's letters to his friend Bill Kozlenko. Other letters sent by Odets to a variety of correspondents are also included.

The Contracts Series consists of contracts Odets signed with movie studios.

The Manuscripts Series consists of scripts, notes, and test scenes from Odets's various projects, including a scrapped film called Joseph. Also included are proofs of The Time Is Right: The 1940 Journal of Clifford Odets, published posthumously in 1988.

The Photographs Series includes portraits and photos of Odets, portraits of Odets's first wife Luise Rainer, and photos of film and stage productions of Odets's works.

The Magazines Series comprises magazines with articles or advertisements about Odets or his works or colleagues, organized chronologically.

The bulk of the Ephemera Series are playbills and lobby cards for Odets's plays and movies. Also included are one sheets, small flyers, pressbooks, and tickets. Two of the pamphlets feature Odets's writing, while the pamphlet by Margaret Brenman-Gibson is an analysis of Odets and his work.

The A/V Series consists of two LPs: a recording of the original Broadway cast of the Golden Boy musical adaptation and a recording of Odets in conversation with Herman Harvey.
