Founded in 1970, the Ecology Center of Ann Arbor is a grassroots community organization committed to increasing environmental awareness. Records include meeting minutes, financial statements, correspondence, news clippings, photographs and publications relating to the activities and functions of the organization, especially in the areas of recycling, energy conservation, and ecology.

The Ecology Center of Ann Arbor records are divided into four series: Administrative Records, Topical files, Publications and Publicity, and Visual Materials. The records document the efforts of this grassroots community organization to increase environmental awareness through the establishment of recycling and energy conservation programs, and by publicizing the need for pesticide control and responsible solid waste disposal among other issues. With recent accessions, the division between Administrative Records and Publications and Publicity is less distinct, as center publications were often included with planning and meeting materials. Researchers should check both series when looking for material printed by and about the Ecology Center.

Both the Topical Files and Visual Materials series are divided into sub-series. The Topical Files series is divided into sub-series based on the date range represented by the materials in the order in which they were processed. There is significant overlap between sub-series. The Visual Materials series is divided into sub-series based on the type of records represented.

The bulk of the collection is topical files maintained by the center regarding policies, campaigns, lawsuits, and environmental activism, relevant to center activities. Materials included in the Topical Files series include lawsuits, meetings, and documentation related to DOW Chemical Company; medical waste and incinerators; pesticides, particularly dioxin, and their environmental impact; and environmental and racial justice. This series also includes lawsuits with Gelman Sciences and Lindane, and partnership materials with the Michigan Environmental Justice Coalition, Healthcare Without Harm, and the Michigan Network for Children's Environmental Health, among other local organizations.

Major Elizabeth Allen advocated for veterans, particularly women and African Americans, and campaigned for greater awareness of veterans' issues, including Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder and its effect on military families. Materials include personal and family military, financial, and medical records, as well as photographs, digital video content, correspondence, personal writings, and newspaper clippings.

The papers of Major Elizabeth Allen document her service in the United States military as well as that of three generations of her family. The papers highlight her personal experiences with the military, Post-traumatic Stress Disorder, and Agent Orange; however they also include materials about her teaching and professional service. Materials include correspondence, family financial records, newspaper clippings, unpublished written works, photographs, biographical materials, newsletters and collected magazines, and academic articles.

Elizabeth W. Bauer is a disability rights activist who served many years defending the rights of the disabled within Michigan, across the country, and internationally. She also served an eight year term on Michigan's State Board of Education. This collection contains materials relating to different disability rights issues--such as deinstitutionalization, community placement, education, euthanasia, sterilization, and disability legislation--as well as papers regarding the many organizations through which Bauer enacted her work.

There is an abundance of information on the relationship between the English Language Institute, its staff and similar institutions both at the University of Michigan and elsewhere; including the University of Michigan International Center, the Civil Aeronautics Administration, the English Language Institute in Mexico, the Ford Foundation, the Inter-American Educational Foundation, the Kellogg Foundation, the Linguistic Institute, Rockefeller Foundation, and the U.S. Office of Education. Also in the collection are extensive files of directors Charles C. Fries and Robert Lado and administrator George E. Luther.

The records of the diocese of Michigan have been arranged into the following series: Bishops' files, Executive and administrative bodies, Diocesan organizations, Diocesan programs, Diocesan staff, Parishes and missions, Clergy, Audio and visual material, and Miscellaneous.

The record group is most valuable for its documentation of the history of the diocese and the individual churches within its administration, with a lesser amount of material pertaining to religious functions performed and to the operation of diocesan administrative groups and departments. For a number of reasons, there is scant material pertaining to the administration of the diocesan office or to the special programs that have been initiated by it over the years. Some of this material may be found in the papers of individual bishops whose papers have also come to the library and are separately cataloged. These include Samuel McCoskry, Samuel Smith Harris, Charles D. Williams, Herman Page, and Richard Emrich. Records of parishes that remain open are under the jurisdiction of the relevant parish, and records of other institutions that remain open, such as missions, are under the jurisdiction of their deanery or parent parish. Local-level records held by the diocesan archives largely concern parishes, missions, etc. that have closed.

The records of the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan are a rich resource of material, not only for the programs and activities of the Episcopal Church in western Michigan, but also for their documentation of the role of the church in the life of the various communities served by the diocese.

Records from the Episcopal Diocese of Western Michigan first came to the Bentley Historical Library in 1972. Since then, the diocese has made several significant additions to their records. In 1999 the record group was reprocessed with the aim of drawing together like materials. The record group now consists of twenty-two separate series.
